Hwy 427 Expansion: Creating a more efficient drive for commuters
Extending Highway 427 is a key priority in addressing the efficient movement of people and goods within the context of the province's Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe. The Highway 427 extension provides economic benefits to the province by offering an enhanced freeway route into York Region, the Vaughan Business area and the CPR Vaughan Intermodal Facility. This project facilitates the improvement of the province’s transportation network, creating a much easier commute for residents of the area, and reducing traffic on other major routes.
The Highway 427 expansion project includes:
New 6.6km extension from Highway 7 to Major Mackenzie Drive
• eight lanes from Highway 7 to Rutherford Road
• six lanes from Rutherford Road to Major Mackenzie Drive
• three interchanges: Langstaff, Rutherford and Major Mackenzie
• new median High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes
4km road widening from Finch Avenue to Highway 7
• six to eight lanes, from Finch Avenue to south of Steeles Avenue
• four to eight lanes, from south of Steeles Avenue to Highway 7
• new median High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes
The 427 Expansion has no shortage of obstacles along the way; rivers, creeks, ravines, railways, and other roadways. Consequently, DECAST has supplied / will supply a wide variety of girder shapes and sizes. As of Early 2020, DECAST supplied a total of 223 girders of various sizes/designs, CPCI1200 to NU2400, weights ranging from 15 tonnes to 83 tonnes, with spans from 19m to 50m. A precast modular bridge system was put in place at Langstaff Road, which is part of the realignment of Langstaff for the north expansion. 22 pieces spanning 15m and weighing 32 tonnes and a headwall that weighed 35 tonnes were placed in one day. Additionally, DECAST's retaining wall system called GRAVIX® was installed on this project for wingwalls. 18 pieces were supplied and installed in just two days. DECAST supplied approximately 8km of reinforced concrete pipe (450mm to 1500mm), 291 box culverts (217 - 1200mm x 2400mm, and 74 - 2400mm x 1500mm), 200 maintenance hole structures and 150 catch basins.
