Really good stuff. The other really great thing about planting these oaks the way you did is there is no worry about whether you planted them too shallow or more importantly too deep for the health of the tree. No worry about watering either. These sprouted naturally and thus are planted perfectly and they are native to your area and require absolutely zero supplemental water. No watering schedule until established. They are established from the day they germinated as they would in the wild. Well done. And you should be approaching your first self seeding year in the next 5-10 years. They usually start to produce their first crop of acorns between 20-40 years old. That will be a beautiful oak forest for centuries, and potentially millennia, to come.

my oak tree seedlings are popping out of pots but some are dying off. some are thriving and some are just hanging in there, i can't figure it out. i know they dont want to be in pots and indoors. thats probably the problem

Would planting oak trees in a field keep it in a "green belt" status? Harvesting the acorns for seed eventually?

At what point is the sprout no longer appealing to squirrels? I planted some and the squirrels dug them up.

@Mr. Cool sounds good, I have them planted right now in cups on the windowsill. They are sprouting and I have both the shoot going down and coming up about to form leaves. The acorns are starting to crack open but it looks like the meat of the acorn is still present.

The deer eating the trees makes the trees more resilient

Not really. If deer repeatedly break the growing tip then you don't get a tree, you get a bush
