There are things to debate against and things to use context and common sense that tournament or KO football is about eliminating and qualifying to the next round cause possession and stats don't appear on the cup trophies just like the Carabao cup and the FA cup unfortunately champions league is the hardest considering the teams available.

There more than a couple of examples of them taking a handful of shots and with the opponent taking more. But Madrid still go through. One game they had 3 shots whilst PSG had 21. Another at home they had 10 shots with Chelsea taking 28. They won both ties on aggregate.

@@dannybradley8391 Small but important correction: Man City are better in the *ball possession* department., which doesn't always equate to a consistent creation of high quality chances when facing a style that hard counters possession-oriented teams like the catenaccio pulled off by Madrid for 100+mins. City had 33 shots with only 9 on target and an xG of 2.7, compared to Madrid's 3 on target with an xG of 1.4. Taking an even closer look, Man City's xGOT (for shots on target) was actually only slightly higher than Madrid's at 1.79 vs. 1.46, meaning that City potentially only had a second goal in them the whole game after all of that possession, after all of those shots taken and all of those crosses and corners put into the box. That second goal was probably De Bruyne's missed sitter but what Madrid did so well for so long is to reduce all of that control over the game that City had (particularly after Rodrygo's goal) to just ~2 high quality chances in 120mins.
One of those went in and the other, well if you're playing a calculated numbers game to get to the penalty shootout where arguably you might have the upper hand with more experience (and intel on the opposition thanks to Kepa and Rudiger)...reducing the opposition to a coin flip on one, maybe two chances is as good as it gets in reducing the effectiveness of the opposing team's high possession percentage. City are obsessed in having control of the ball (like most Guardiola teams do), but Madrid and Ancelotti made sure that obsession was largely inefficient and far more ineffective than usual with a disciplined and resilient display of Catenaccio while still maintaining a somewhat reasonable xG of 1.4 across the few chances they had overall. It's neutralising your opponent while still maintaining a credible threat on the counter attack.
The difference between Madrid's Catenaccio display and the park the bus of say a Luton Town or most other teams is that Madrid can still keep high enough xG numbers on the break while also holding City's to within arm's length, resulting in a low xG difference between the two that unsurprisingly led to the penalties. A 'park the bus' team would also have 11 men behind the ball but crucially with something like 0.5xG or less, and typically in a league game where that side are playing for either the 1 point draw or even to simply avoid racking up the numbers in the Goals Against column, and then roll on next match.
Conclusion: Wednesday night was just one example of what Madrid do best on this stage: they know how to win 'ugly' when necessary and play the numbers game to seize victory out of the jaws of defeat, more than any other club in the history of the UCL.

They havnt said anything bad. ☑️ Halland had like 2 shots total over both legs☑️. If this was chess; city play to eat up material while Madrid just try to get checkmate as soon as possible. So all that “city dominating possession” talk is irrelevant because Madrid always posed a serious lethal threat on the counter. (In order to beat Madrid in two legs city NEED Kyle walker. Madrid doesn’t depend on any individual player to beat city) ☑️. Even though he missed his pk Modric taking the first pk displayed the difference in mentality between the two teams. What these guys need to know and understand is that in sports and the rest of the life. I agree with Simon, there has been an improvement given the fact we maintained the same position, but additionally we went one step further in the UCL, which we didn't have last year. So there is progress in UCL and sustainability in the Premier league.

So the best league will have the same winner for the fourth consecutive time and no team in the semi finals of the elite competition. 🤨

Penalty kicks is a lottery, but even there City had the a priori advantage: the team that goes first wins >65% of the time. City contrived to lose. So, in a game where they had all the advantages, playing at home, with Walker and De Bruyne back and Madrid without Courtois, Tchouameni, Militao, Alaba, and starting 4th choice Nacho in central defense, plus City having the first kick in the shootout, and Madrid missing their first penalty to hand City the advantage, City still contrived to lose. This is a profound testament more to the immense mental strength of Madrid and an extraordinary self-belief, in addition to great nous. They DO have something special, and it's monumental. For them to win under those conditions is unreal. Jordan missing this is just a reflection of his limitations, not Madrid's.
