I met Warne and Lenny Tristano at the Half Note, Manhattan, Spring & Hudson Sts in 1959 or 60. It was an afternoon matinee. The joint was empty. We had a drink and hung out in between sets. A very cool guy!

Warne. So youthful in his playing even near the end of his life.

He would only live two months after this video. :-(

I really enjoy Warne Marsh's tiplets and his motif development. Incredible relaxing yet engaging music. One of a kind, always swinging.

This film provides a fantastic view of his great left hand technique the cameraman gets props for staying right on it... Beautiful recording of the whole band thank you for posting.

Amazing! A recording a few months before Warne died... Read the book dedicated to him: An Unsung Cat.

Thanks for posting this Mr. Klopotowski. I was part of the local jazz organization who sponsored this concert - "Jazz In Flight". It was one our proudest moments as a "direct-action" jazz committee. I think that our leader, Ken Schubert produced this one.

Thanks for the note Bergen, good to hear from you. You should be proud! I believe the video came from a man named Bill Schweitzer, did you know him?

my apologies for the typo in your name Berigan, it may have been auto-corrected.
Also wanted to mention - the videos on youtube come from Bill's portable handheld VHS unit, merged with audio from cassettes of the radio broadcast on KJAZ. The copies I received came from England and were several generations down, if I could get a better audio source I can improve these videos. I wanted to put it out there since you were involved with Jazz in Flight. Thanks again!

thanks so much John for posting. what a treat. i got to hear sal mosca and lenny popkin in 1972, but that's it of the Tristanoites. I have a dozen Warne albums, he was a god to us then, late 60's, those of us following Lennie T's music in NYC....

What an amazing improvisor Warne is ...very rare and beautiful..completely freedom and control at the same time. The accompaniment works, and the playing is good.

Wow - this is terrific! Out of curiosity, can you tell us what the venue was? I was living in SF in those days. Sure wish I had known about this date, but I think this time when way too much of my attention was being taken up with trying to make an unworkable relationship work, over in Oakland....
