- Watch me struggle to fix this 301k km (187k mile) Ferrari/Maserati F154 V8 engine. We are doing the timing chain kit, variators, and a bunch of other stuff while the engine is out, and ironically, we are having supply chain issues with parts.

I don’t understand why this channel still doesn’t have a million plus subs, honestly..
I was thinking exactly the same thing
Because Sreten is doing it right and sharing knowledge without much monkey business. That's why it takes time. He'll get there but usually people want cheap thrills and quick entertainment.
it’s because of the format, in the most respectable German way possible, he’d rather be as thorough as he can than as entertaining as possible. so much respect because not only is he entertaining, these videos will serve as templates to anyone trying to preserve these cars in the future

This should be compulsory viewing for anyone considering picking up a great deal on a used Maserati.
After watching it entirely, I become strong believer fixing BMWs are NOT nowhere near as hard as Maseraties . Thanks for sharing this to all of us.
Watching this, I could never own one of these things even if I could afford it. Such a mess to work on.
The difference beeing: BMWs are sometimes annoying to work on if you don't follow the repair manual. But if you do it the bmw way it's pretty decent. They usually try to use as few bolts/screws as possible and package things nicely. You can usually understand the logic of the engineer that designed it after a while.
And then there is this Maserati thing. Annoying to work on and terrible parts availability and pricing etc.
After trying to work on a Range Rover, BMW are much better because of the diagnostics. Both the capabilities that the car offers and the tools available. This is a lesson for us all that these high milage exotics have the planned obsolescence built in, hence why they depreciate so much
Having had an older Maserati, and having had a 3 series BMW - the Maserati was easier to work on and little different in build quality!
Long ago I owned a 1990 Spyder & a 1989 228. Owned them throughout the 1990s doing the majority of work myself. Probably true of most vehicles, but they weren't nearly as complicated back then. Also, although sourcing them was volatile a couple times, I ultimately had no problem getting parts for them, right down to interior trim.
My neighbour has a Ghibli, it spends 6 months of the year in the garage getting rebuilt. However is super fun when it's working..
“Super fun when it’s working.” -BMW
My Range Rover is like that too.
@@thugmaster420 compared to maserati, bmw are probably still reliability monsters lmao
@@thugmaster420 I can vouch for that
Thats mostly the case with every major Italian brands hot take.. Including the HF integrales, all the GTA Alfa Romeos and so on.. They rarely work, but when they do for a short time, it's fun..
Maserati is mostly in the business of selling cars to people who would likely never trouble themselves to find the hood latch. Why make parts for them when a simple blown gasket means it's time to buy a whole new Maserati?
Great vid man. Sincerely hoping you find everything you need in spite of not having access to these golden ticket parts.
I'm surprised there isn't a "right to maintain" legislation from EU or something with cars especially still in production that they must produce replacement parts
@@R03333 I believe there is. The manufacturer is legally obligated to produce spare parts for 20 years after the car was released. I'm talking about original spare parts. Aftermarket parts manufacturers have no limit and can stop whenever they want to.
Soooo true! LOL
18:29 You know it's an Italian engine when you see spaghetti instead of an engine 😂
😂😂😂
The stuff of nightmares, that plastic spaghetti mess!
Good one.
They are all like this now. Have a look at a N63/S63, its a bowl of thick noodles. Hoses everywherrreeeeeee
It wasn't like that on older italian engines. Hell, I can replace all the accessories on my Alfa boxer in the batter of 2 hours. Now all engines are like that, and I'm losing hope for the future.
You should get an Oscar for content. Just perfect!
He should get Nobel for automotive mechanics
Is insane that a available car to be bought already has unavailable parts. I really hope that the right to repair laws in Europe help solve this problem.
Amazing work as usual Streten!
Stellantis (formerly FCA) has a history of discontinuing parts appallingly early. I was shocked to discover the RAM dealer I used to work at could not obtain an OEM water pump for a then 6-year-old Ram 1500 because it was discontinued in the parts catalogue. There honestly need to be regulations enforcing some long term parts support for vehicles, because there is zero incentive for manufacturers to do so and it leaves the customer holding the bag when they literally can't get what they need to fix their car.
And stellantis now owns a bunch of brands, it's a shame. All throw away cars, just like everything else. Welcome to a sustainable future everyone 😮💨
YOUR JOKING ITS THE EU THAT WANT TO TAKE THE RIGHT TO REPAIR ENEYTHING. THAT INCULDS VINTAGE BIKES AND CARS .
There are laws in europe that state how long a car manufacturer has to make spare parts for a car after discontinuing it. I'm pretty sure they are putting parts on "indefinite backorder" and only selling expensive assemblies/modules where a cheap part is actually what you need to circumvent these laws.
According to the IATF16949, spare parts have to be manufactured 10 years after the end of production of a specific car. If it makes economical sense to the part supplier, production can be continued even after 10 years, but it´s not required by the IATF, therefore guaranteed.
All those Mercedes AMG's have engine out's every 50.000. Ferrari's have it every 15.000. But when it's a maserati. People dump the car. Finally we see a YT'er who just DOES IT. Finally...!!!
How can you not dump it, when parts are not available even from Maserati? And those turbos are ridiculously expensive, even for Ferrari imho
Sreten has balls the size of watermelons
@@HNedel Recycle
@@anthonyxuereb792to recycle you also need parts which aren't available. That's why he couldn't have the turbos rebuilt.

In general people think that BMW's are a nightmare to own and work on. Maserati heard about that and said "Hold my pasta, we're going to ruin someone's day". Looking at the video makes me think that someone in Maserati decided to order an exact amount of gaskets for the cars they're going to build and not a single more.....
BMW has a very good support for spare parts. Thats worth so much! Unfortunately most other brands dont care enough. :(

m539 - Just a word of advise. Make sure that o-rings which you are using are VITON and not nitrile rubber. I found that pretty much all generic o-ring sets are nitrile. Nitrile becomes hard in hot, oily environment within 5000-10000km. VITON is pretty much OEM rubber, stays soft for 100000km +.
This is one of my favorite series so far! Almost nobody bothers fixing these cars and certainly no other channel has content like yours.
There is also the German couple that fix LR 3-4. They are very good too.

26:51 I have worked in the manufacturing of gaskets. They have a nib as an orientation feature to prevent the gasket from being installed incorrectly. Since when relaxed the gasket is formed, you guarrantee that when installed the profile of the gasket as formed matches the profile of the intake manifold.
The reason the new one has a nib and the old one doesn't is probably because they had issues with gasket orientation and introduced a nib, and likely updated the manifold with a cut-out for said nib. You probably have the old manifold, but the old gaskets are not available anymore, so you get the new gasket, but nowhere does it say you'd have to modify it to fit the old manifold.
Once you work in the design and manufacture of these compoennts you begin to understand some of the 'crazy' decisions. Usually comes down to cost or time.
Yeah I understand another function for the nib is so a quality control inspector (or often now an image recognition system) can check they are present after the manifold is installed.
@@straightpipediesel yes, also another function in some instances.
Some radiators have ‘mickey mouse ears’ which is a feature on each corner of the tank gaskets which are held in production to prevent so called ‘misplaced gaskets’ a major cause of radiator infant mortalities.
Damn if it did 300k km on same engine - that is a good Maseratti
Odds one in a million xd
For all the shit, the stuff held up that long and the complexity isn't an issue.
Imagine an engine out job because a piece of plastic somewhere broke. We put a lot of stake in the materials science/engineering
I've seen one V6 Ghibli for sale in Poland and the guy have done 400k kilometers on it. Just needed a cam chain service (because Maserati didn't specify when to do it).
@@FryChicken actually you made a good point.
And I'm saying this from an Italian but Italian-car hater viewpoint (prancing horse and raging bull included)
@@vvevvevvvv That's impressive. If these engines, including all their complexity, will do 400k km, even if an engine out service is required after that, it's almost acceptable.

That walnut blaster is a good investment. If any gets into the combustion chamber it just burns off and emits a nice smell. No nasty chemicals.

+1, early S63 engine, preferably the very first one from the '11MY where they blew up one after another. Would actually be interested to see how complicated the engine is to repair. F10 M5s were available in manual, so that alone should be reason enough for Sreten to buy one with the manual box!
The Medusa engine tubes everywhere
I have a Levante GTS with the F154 V8 and despite the cross-plane crank and different oil sump, it's easy to pretend I'm paddle shifting an exquisite Ferrari SUV. It is just a wonderful, sonorous experience. The great thing about this video is you rarely see Ferraris with this many miles so it really is a glimpse into the resiliency of this power plant - regardless of the marque using it. This same engine with a flat plane crank and dry oil sump is used in Ferrari's California, GTC4, Portofino, Roma, 488, F8 and SF90 but you would rarely (if ever) see these cars rack up 187K miles - nice to know they could.
I am quite impressed by how well the walnut blasting worked
Hi, an Audi engine owner here with direct injection. Yes it's fairly simple process and effective, the problem is having to remove the parts to get to it is annoying and time consuming.
@@hussydahustla I probably need to clean the intake valves as my car has over 300k km and likely has never had the valves cleaned. I cannot afford to buy the equipment for walnut blasting and I'm struggling to find someone that would be renting the equipment. I might go down the chemical cleaning route.
I have done it with a small brush on my drill, lots of brake cleaner and patience. The only way to keep costs down when fixing a car at home.
It's 4:30am in SA Johannesburg, and I'm watching the Maserati engine building project. What a best stuff to watch before starting a day.

How dare you upload just 38 minutes. I'm joking. Love you man.

Thanks for confirming the insanity of owning a Maserati and the folly of direct injection ( without at least 1 port injector)
Just wanted to say, I've been following you wonderful channel since basically the start. Since I am a 2009 Quattroporte owner I very much approve of this project! Keep up the great work!!
After watching this I would never buy a broken Maserati. I’m a Maserati fan too, having owned 6 of them. I can’t believe how complex the engine looks, designed by an Italian Committee probably. 😊
All Maseratis are broken though..
It seems that thee only way to drive an older Maserati is to replace the eomplete drivetrain with another maker.
@@MikhailScottKy I was thinking the same thing - and you're probably right - unfortunately the engine and exhaust sound is what a Maserati is. 😊
@@Nigel999 I don't question that what I'm saying is that instead of buying fuel injectors for Maserati they're probably made for another car that's more reasonably priced. Also, belts, plugs, wires, etc. Can quite often be purchased from the original manufacturer for less money. Oddly enough, a turn signal on a Lamborghini that Matt Armstrong was working on his green. One was like 200 quid from Lamborghini but it was 3 and 1/2 lb for the same thing from a Ford econo box on eBay
@MikhailScottKy im sure for some stuff you could cross shop with a chrysler 300 since i believe thats what this car shared a platform with? it might be the ghibli im thinking of. however for internal engine stuff it would likely be a lot harder to find, somehow i feel that ferrari isnt a cheaper option to maserati.
I just Love the cursing at the engine as Streten is stripping it down, as though the engine is listening! 🤣 We all do it and the "WTF does that go"?! Great work again Streten!
Parts are so hard to find, the car itself is super rare, hard to service, therefore ...

Except yours. You bought probably the only available parts for this car. 😂
You are just incredible. My wife loves watching and listening to your play on word commentary. Lol. I agree with so many of the people who take the time to write anything. You should have 5 million subscribers and the same for Patreon. You are the best thing out there on RUclips!!
Didn't skip a single ad - this channel deserves it.
Love the content. Again, the most common problem with these high performance cars is people who buy them drive very aggressively all the time and fail to do proper maintenance with quality oils, fluids, parts and within strict intervals. Then they complain they broke, not reliable etc
It's strange, i worked with cars for about fifteen years.
German engineering is pretty straightforward. Sometimes there was a Italian car in the shop, strange problems, poor quality and strange electric connectors 😢
Whoever gets this car, gets the videos with it as proof of excellent workmanship.
Factor that into the Price as well 🙂
I cannot understand why Maserati would discontinue parts for an engine that is only a decade old. I can imagine how the perfectionist part of Sreten is crying in the corner Everytime a non available seal is mentioned xD
I found your channel a month ago, binge watched all of them (had some weird dreams due to that), it's shocking to see how the quality of the videos keeps getting even better. Best content on yt by far! I don't even like BMWs.

I really love your way of presentation. Even when you say it is a struggle … you make it look easy. It is almost some kind of meditation, looking at your video’s.

29:49 Mama Miracoli vibes, love how you sneak in things like that 😁
I really like you using your knowledge of BMWs to fix cars of other brands. It's like we're discovering the differences together 😀
After you got the timing set installed, I was worried you were turning the engine counterclockwise, but a while later I remembered that I was looking at the back end of the engine 😂😂
I think someone at Maserati is planning a meeting as the sales are about to go down 😅
Just an amazing way to get started on Ferrari engines. Streten you're a machine. Great job mate.
Key takeaway - availability of even basic parts is a problem - not really a suitable car for a serious restoration.
Seems like buying good used turbos and cleaning them before installation is the best option here, I fully stand behind going about that issue in this way!
Extremely interesting. Two details in this engine I don’t like: the wiring is difficult and some parts are unnecessarily complicated.

Somewhere under that mess “how to make this more complicated” is a serpentine belt 🤯 You’re doing a fantastic job of tackling this vehicle 👍
