The instrument is the Kobyz. It's a 2 stringed instrument, with one string made up of 75 horse hairs, and the other string made from 60 horsehairs (and the curved bow which is made with 40 horse hairs). The strings aren't pushed down to a fret, but rather are played with pressure by either the fingernail, or by a pad on the finger, as well as the tones varied by the pressure of the bow.
Dimash has been improving his lower register over these last years. In earlier works you can hear his low register was not his strength, but he has definitely improved as he has matured.
This performance was actually the premiere of this song. Music was composed by Igor Krutoy, the gentleman on the piano, lyrics are by Sarah Vaughan, composed and written specifically for this performance.

Dimash has 6 octaves and 5 semi-tones. Sometimes eager "Dears" like to pad reality with extra octaves! He is still improving though and has added so much to his voice in the last 5 years. He practices 3 hours every day.
I'm new to Dimash's works but I'm really glad to hear his voice is improving! Just afraid all of the trainings disturb his health but knowing that he is getting better is very relieving.

Take a look/listen to Dimash's 2nd performance of 'Stranger' for Super Shine Bro.s in China. Note that he was ill with rhinitis and had to leave right after performing because of it. He was waiting for his 3rd surgery for it and ended up leaving the show because of it. He is now going to start concerts, beginning in Dubai. In his performance for SSB he did some amazing and quite different vocalize in the middle of the song. He was unable to hold that last note as long though because of his rhinitis. Even if you weren't sure about the right pronunciation, you definitely know instruments. Cudos! If you want to hear the highest note Dimash has sung on stage, you need to find Unforgettable Day Gakku. It's a live performance and only this particular one holds that note. In one of his interviews he said that something went wrong at one point and he wanted to replace the 'mistake' with something special for the audience - so he used the emotion and sang a 'dog whistle note'.

Ikanaide! It is one of the news ones. He sang it for the Tokyo Jazz Festival 2021. Wow! You are the first reactor that knows this is a Kobyz! I love this instrument. You gained my respect and my subscription! 😁 Yeah, a lot of Dimash's songs begin soft but not all of them. Most of his Kazakh songs are not like that. One of my favorites is Samal Tau (there is a Kobyz too 😁). Dimash said once in an interview that this is the most challenging song for him. Not about the vocals. It is about the emotions, the song talks about Kazakh history: Kazakhs were taken for their homes to be soldiers in a war that was not theirs. My favorite Dimash performance is a traditional Kazakh folk song. Very stripped down and not so showy, but mesmerizing: Samaltau for the Tokyo Jazz festival.

Yeah, a lot of Dimash's songs begin soft but not all of them. Most of his Kazakh songs are not like that.
One of my favorites is Samal Tau (there is a Kobyz too 😁). Dimash said once in an interview that this is the most challenging song for him. Not about the vocals. It is about the emotions, the song talks about Kazakh history: Kazakhs were taken for their homes to be soldiers in a war that was not theirs. If you want to react to it, the best version is Samaltau Digital Show 2021 (it is his concert on line).
