Had about 80 hours in a P2 Neptune. P3 was fast with a lot of power and I was too old for the P8. But there was nothing that ever compared to the bow seat on a P2 when some of the pilots tried to act out aerial antics with 2 turning and 2 burning it was a ride.
I bet. I flew as the inflight ordnanceman out of NAS Brunswick for 5 years. It never got old to me; being down at 200-300 ft popping buoys, doing MAD runs, also being the inflight photographer. There was a P-2 Neptune on our base parked as a static display on the side of the road on the grass after you get through the front gate. I can only imagine what it was like sitting in that low seat at the nose.
Wow what an airplane. While in the Navy I put in over 2500 hours in the P3B Orion back in the 70's and 80's. Cant believe they even have BOSE headsets now, what a life. Wonder if they still buzz ships at 500', those were the days. :)
Flew on P3-B and P3-C Update myself. These guys look like they are on a tourist flight to Mexico. And what's up with the officers having bars on their flight suits, half the fun of flying was to have the stupid ground Marines salute us enlisted because we were in flight suits.

This turbofan update to maritime patrol was long awaited... if the uk hasn't put orders in already, i hope it does so soon.. wish we could see some sonar-buoy deployments....
This is boring AF. Try flying a Bear Trap mission in the P-3C Orion carrying 120-140 sonobuoys (only 48 are external so the remaining are all loaded manually) down at 200 feet while also conducting MAD runs with your LPA on the entire time you're on station). Word on the street is these guys in the P-8's aren't very good sub hunters/killers. The P-8 missions are like sitting in a Delta 737 on your way to vacation. 200-300 ft tracking a Soviet submarine is where it's at as well as watching a Foxtrot sub on the surface recharging batteries while also having swim call. We made a care package including our squadron ball cap, t shirt, two cans of Coke & a issue of Hustler magazine and dropped it from the plane. They scooped it up, opened it on deck & took the photos of them waving our shirts & other "gifts" at us while flying a racetrack pattern around them. I'm grateful for my years as serving as the inflight ordnanceman/inflight photographer on the P-3C Orion. It never got old on station down low, it'd look like the wingtips were going to hit the water each time we turned. When in the flight station it looks like your on a boat because in order to see the horizon I'd have to bend down & look up. Good times.

Anybody can explain to me, what this aircraft do and what kind of defenses it have? Like in the time of war, wouldn't it be a turkey shoot for the enemy fighter aircraft? Do the crew have any protection in case it is shot down?
I’m sure they have chaff, anti-lock technology, jamming, etc, and I almost think those giant vertical pods are escape hatches or pods. Past that, these probably avoid flying around without serious air support or when there is much of a threat of being shot down.
WASHINGTON, June 4, 2019 (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy surveillance aircraft in international airspace over the Mediterranean Sea was intercepted three times by a Russian jet fighter over three hours on Tuesday, including a high-speed pass that was deemed unsafe and put the plane at risk, the U.S. Sixth Fleet said. "While the Russian aircraft was operating in international airspace, this interaction was irresponsible," the Sixth Fleet said in a statement. "We expect them to behave within international standards set to ensure safety and prevent incidents," it said. The Sixth Fleet said the first and third intercepts of the P-8A Poseidon were deemed to be safe but the second intercept involved a high-speed pass directly in front of the U.S. aircraft that produced wake turbulence and "put our pilots and crew at risk." The intercept lasted about 28 minutes, it said. (Reporting by David Alexander Editing by Paul Tait)

Randy Montrose -those Orion airframes were really old. Two high bypass modern fans are more efficient and reliable that four old turboprops. New tech always needs a workup period. If they need hard points they will add them, otherwise the airframe is cleaner, range is better, radar cross section smaller. So much more room, much quieter and comfortable for those long patrols.
