      WTF. How have I missed this. SD is playing on my headphones all the time. They are geniuses with brilliant arrangements and lyrics. I am 62 and now discover this? I love it. Add another to my long list of SD favorites.

    A killer tune, w/ another killer lead by Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter'. The beauty of 'Pretzel Logic' is that it has essentially 3 and half minute 'pop songs' - as weird as their 'pop' might get, that's essentially their approach, even if their tunes take these unusual turns here and there. This is from early 1974.

    This band is so brilliant and they have such an amazing discography. For my money, the album Pretzel Logic is their finest moment.

    Jeff Baxter is such a great guitar player he helps make any song special. Follow his career and you get a 70s / 80s rock history lesson.

      He wasn't actually in Steely Dan. They touted once first album and quit here in Boston. People were shouting for the house band . Did half a show and never toured . All gold albums with zero live shoes. In 90 ? They said F it started touring. I saw them Walter Becker was the lead guitarist. Not bass.

      You have to hear Automatic Man. 1976 one hit . Best first album ever. Bayette is the singer. Pat Thrall is lead guitar. Blue cover with alien head . Two albums , first is incredible. You will not be disappointed !! 76 Bat out of hell, hotel Cali, frampton comes alive, Boston, holy mackerel what a year.

      You might want to know that I went to school and hung out with Jeff and his bros. Steve and Mike and Lukather and Paich-Toto.
      Met and hung out with Steely Dan at a 2 day gig with Jeff, 50 yrs. ago, 3/11-12/74. It was very cool and so much fun to watch Jeff play with my favorite band. Listen to Katy Lied with an ear towards the rhythm section, Jeff's drumming, he was a real prodigy.

    In my opinion the Steely Dan oevre is seperated into albums 1+2 and albums 3-7. My favourite track on Pretzel Logic is Any Major Dude, but this one is the runner up

    SO many funky danceable jazzy tracks from the groovemasters but please check out the whole album Aja but especially Black Cow (a cocktail drink)
    Its heaven for the ears like so many Dan tunes.

    That's Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on guitar. His guitar work is stellar on this track. A true guitar talent... and, of course, that's why Fagan and Becker hired him.

    i used to drum with this tune..this is a song about bridging across the night to the light of day...getting on. Beautiful bridge interlude towards the short guitar solo...nice...rather then the usual walk in.

    This was the first Steely Dan album I ever bought even though I knew them from their radio hits. This album pulled me in and I was a Dan Fan from East Saint Louis Toodaloo on.

    I got this CD...it fell out of heaven into my lap..somehow there is a million scratches on it but some parts still play....that's right...i found it in a Vietnamese 2nd hand shop in Chester Hill..

    By far and away my favorite cut on the 'Pretzel' album. It's so thick, almost Big Band if big bands could rock...And so NYC...It's close to perfect.

    FYI just listened to your “Eastside Edibles” tune. A lot of great changeups and hooks - intro (which I believe you also use for your show) is a killer. Great arrangement. Not exactly sure what the lyrics were about (as I couldn’t make out all of them) overall great tune!

    As a guy that regards can't buy a thrill for top spot, this is one my top five SD tracks. As a drummer, there are turns in this one that still vex me, and that guitar solo is just so perfectly nervously languid. Like casually actually chewing a toothpick.
    Any major dude will tell you is so sweet. Very out of character. A great song for just about any band, but somehow low in my anthology rankings.

    Jeff Porcaro is the drummer on Night by Night and Katy Lied. Katy Lied is a lot more of a jazz album. Closer to Aja. Royal Scam is closer to Pretzel Logic.

With nine studio albums and four Donald Fagen projects, spanning 40 years,--no shortage of creative brilliant jazz/R&B/pop MASTERPIECES from each. And with such layered subtlety to be discovered there, you’ll find the more you listen to these guys, the more you’ll appreciate. Fagen/Becker and Fagen-solo have no equal on our musical landscape!

    Early Steely Dan has always been a champion of the societal fringe and loserdom. The bulk of their songs then tell stories about the wrong side of the tracks. The newer stuff dwelled on the winners "up on the hill", who were really just losers in their own way.

    You call it variety , 70's never turn off the Dan as songs fade solos are always screaming to fade. Walter Becker comes up with the lead. They then get who they want for the style or whatever. Rick Derringer said I spent six weeks doing one solo. I told Walter to do it. I heard it on the album and understood why they wanted me . Weird genius's

    To me this is the most OVERRATED song from their most overrated album.
    IMO the chorus is uncharacteristically predictable and trite by Steely Dan’s incredibly lofty standards, and to me this track sounds like the theme song to a ‘70’s TV detective show.
    Having said all that, they went on SUCH an incredibly creative tear AFTER Pretzel Logic with everything from Katy Lied through The Nightfly...that the slight creative hiccup here is easily forgiven and forgotten.
