I always find night riding spices up my local trails when I start to get bored of them, They feels completely different once the night falls and the werewolves and vampires emerge from their day sleep..
Good point! Don't forget the weirwolves.
I hate that all of my near by trails are based around metro parks with strick closing times and no night riding permitted. Bought an off road atv led light and fabricated a bar mount and rigged up a Milwaukee M12 flashlight to power it from my bottle cage, before I realized it was restricted here...
Night rides are also a great way to learn how to corner better. Using a bar mounted light and a helmet mounted light is very... illuminating. If you don't turn your head into the corner and put your eyes (light) where you want to go you can't see anything.
Yes it makes it more fun because I push my speed more dangerously higher than I normally would because I'm scared. I know there aren't really monsters hiding about to kill me but my brain won't listen.
I find night rides scary, because imagine being in the middle of the woods at night, riding mountain bike trails, absolutely terrifying but a fun experience when with your friends!
I''ve been riding much of the season on a 19 year old XC race hardtail with v-brakes and a 100 mm fork (it's a long story). Under biking keeps me humble.
I have a 60mm fork instead. I used to ride cyclocross so it's no big deal. Just stop being a sissy and remember Rule #5
Makes perfect sense for the ability of the bike and of course ride considering what we used to ride in the 80's and 90's. Great video
90s rigid MTB is the best.
Wow! Great handling skills. Again, love you guys for your positivity! Always feel like ridiing after watching you both. Also, you both seem so kind. Be well!
I love gravel/adventure bikes on greens. It's like a race track and you cover so much ground! If you decide to keep doing this, I would *highly* recommend the PNW coast suspension dropper. Game changer for this kind of riding.
We might have something of that sort on the way 😉
Just got some 45mm on a drop bar rigid mtb. Intend to take on some rocky stuff. The beauty is the bonus of riding on the road easily from the front door. Used to 2.2 s so will be interesting. Thanks for the inspiration...
I love riding my local trails on my gravel bike, though I do get some strange looks from people who think I brought a road bike onto the trails.
Yeah same here. Even had a dude go what road bike fits XC tires(referring to the 29x2.1s I have on). I just reply a touring gravel bike.
Because you did.
@RollinRat wow, fixed! I want to try this but I'm afraid of bigger-rock tech sections and basically pedal strike. What gear ratio are you running?
@RollinRat awesome, thanks for the thorough response! I need to go check my gear ratios, but I'm a bike mechanic (not by trade) and I ride beaters people were literally throwing away. I use a rigid 90's hi-ten special ;) set up as SS as my mtb, gear ratio is pretty forgiving, and I still have to hike it up steeper parts, but can do most coasty single track using momentum. I have a fixie I just put Salsa Woodchipper drops on, was thinking of making it a gravel bike, it's setup for street atm and where I live (Reno,NV) it's basically 100ft elevation gain per mile it seems in many places. I used to use straps and was brakeless but the hills are steep and I didn't want to die lol so I run a front brake now but got rid of the straps since I hated them, considering going clipless, although I have no experience with clipless at all. I totally forgot I was considering dingle speed! I'm assuming you're running 2 gears of freewheel on one side and two fixed gears on the other? Seems obvious just want to confirm. Also assuming rigid forks? Do you ride drops? Brakes or brakeless? Disregard that last one, I see you said you use both brakes so you run brakes :) You've inspired me!
@RollinRat I love it, thanks!
It’s always a good time when syd and Mackey upload a video
I try this every once in a while with my rigid single speed - things that are just couch surfing on my trail bike are way more challenging and interesting when I have to keep the momentum going to support the single speed and don't have the cushion of full suspension. Underbiking will definitely spice up your life.
I do this occasionally on my circa 1991 Park Pre Hammer (full rigid) MTB on technical trails. It freaks people out, but it's the bike I was riding on those trails almost 30 years ago! And it really makes you ride different - much more of a mental game picking lines because you can't bash over everything.
I respect you guys for being able to be safe and still make great content right now. Especially while avoiding some of the issues other cyclists have faced (like The Vegan Cyclist). Just remember it the content creators like you guys that help us normal people have something to watch while we are stuck inside! Keep up the great work!
Can you fill me in on what happened to VC? All I know is internet warriors were mad he did something during covid times. What's so bad about that?
Evan Steinberg basically what I believe happened was that he went to a bike race in Georgia I think and was posting about it on ig then when he faced backlash he said something about how everyone is going to die someday. I didn’t follow it closely but that is my understanding
@@Atxcmtb man keyboard warriors are awful. Glad he stood up for himself. Thanks for the explanation.
Come on Macky, you had to start saying you were doing “something different but kinda the same” LOL
I agree, it’s pretty cool to watch you ride those trails on a gravel bike, I occasionally do the same thing on my local trails, nice ride!
Love that orange bar tape!
My friend in California does this all the time. Says it’s a blast
Love doing these kinds of rides on my gravel bike
Such a nice quiet bike for POV vids!
My wife who is also a mountain biker goes, "this looks terrible. Also, i can't get past the fact that his bike looks like a Gatorade bottle. " 😂😂
🤣😂
Dude you are riding a more capable bike than we were rolling in the late 80’s early 90’s with borrow bars and end bars, with the 2.25 tires and less groomed trails - no doubt you are digging the ride! 🤙
That's a good point
If your local area keeps building"flow trails"then the gravel bike can make them fun......
Underbiking! Finally I know what I am doing all the time ^^
I am 100kg and I rode up a 600-meter trail hill (and came down) with my good old trustworthy Kona Jake the Snake 2010 model....11 kilos of aluminium pleasure!!!! When on the top of the hill I will never forget the looks of the guys with the Lyriks, the Foxes and the DT Swiss forks staring at me like an alien! I enjoyed it a lot and I suffered a lot as I have only swapped my 10-25 105 short cage Shimano for a 10-18 short cage Shimano.....but...Yeahhhh I enjoyed it! Repeating this with my Canyon Neuron and 10/51 Shimano 8100 was half the effort
"It builds character" is one to put it. Just like "Feed the Lion by hand they said, it'll be fun they said" As the lion is eating your hand.
😂
I’ve used my CX bike on XC group rides. It definitely adds a dimension to the rides. Due to the gearing and weight of the bike, I tend to beat mtbs up steep hills. Not as good on tech trails though.
Wow, you REALLY sent it @2:25 !
You should try 38-40mm gravel tyres on the gravel bike. Thats the sweetspot 👌
Your VO2 max must be through the roof! 2 more months until my Checkpoint arrives and then I can slug it up the Bosque. Keep up the great channel, and keep healing Syd!
I love how loose your hand are on the handlebars (bouncing up and down at times). Also the way you let both of your hands go to switch to drops at one point looked insane. I consider my arms and hands quite loose while I ride but I have nowhere near the body position or stability to let my hands go on a rocky decent.
i swear i noticed his hands as well..i death grip mostly lol
It's definitely worth working on. As our skills coach, Lee, says "heavy feet, light hands"!
I love my gravel grinder. Voodoo steel mtb with drop bars, 2.1 tires and SS. Crazy fun to challenge myself on same trails I normally hit with my Devinci Troy 29er!
Macky's just flying on the gravel bike
Jip, looks like a lot of fun in the drops.
My Canyon Inflite kills trails like this in Phoenix, using 33mm tires…will get 38’s soon and that will open up the whole mountain preserve for me.
Seriously like a couple days ago I thought "hmmm what could Syd and macky do for a video" "ow I know they should ride mtb trails on a gravel bike" "nooo why would they do that" and now I see this video😂
Really enjoyed watching this video. Laid up with broken leg from bike crash on the 2nd & can enjoy biking by video. The one you just did looks like a similar trail here in Prescott. I’m looking forward to getting back in the saddle again! Meanwhile, keep those great videos coming.
Sorry to hear it! Heal fast and well!
I enjoy Gravel on our trail. 2 things though, wish I had a dropper and 2 my hands do wear out after a bit and need a break.
Literally bought a gravel bike just to take it up to my local mtb trails and hit the jumps and gnarly tech bits.
Looks so much like our Kamloops trails!
Such a bad ass on any bike.
Aw shucks 😊
Need some 650b wheels with extra fluffy tires for that stuff!
I just sold my MTB because I bought a Cannondale Topstone Lefty. The bike is super fun and capable. I enjoy riding in the woods much more on this. Climbs sooo much better and isa scalpel in terms of handling. Loose chunk uphill is a problem as are gnarly rock gardens but hey it's always nice to walk in the woods 🤣. I learned to MTB on a fully rigid bike so this is back to my roots and I love it! Ride an MCR on some rough trails please!
Nice bike!! Love it
At least you got a TV on your handlebar ! 😜
I’ve not seen them on the trails in person- only IG- but the Allied folks are known to take their bikes on singletrack around here.
Wow, I hope I never go 52.8mph on a bicycle!-it would mean both my brakes were failed.
My cure for overly familiar (Covid) trails is an old lugged steel touring frame converted to a fixed gear gravel bike. It makes any single track Way More interesting.
I can only imagine!
It hurts to see how much faster you are on your gravel bike in the loose stuff than I would be on my 160/150 bike
Macky when he realizes what non-pro mtb riders have done all their lifes
True
What everybody did as a kid
Definitely pushing the envelope on this ride!
I wonder if one reason things weren't so sketchy is that the thinner tyres were digging through the loose stuff that a normal mtb tyre would skate across the top of. I had a mate who tried out plus tyres and said when things were loose they just skated around.
This is something I'd like to try too ... 👍
Had my gravel bike 3 months now and I done this "ride gravel bike on MTB trail" on a couple of occasions, can't say I'm a fan. Perhaps it's an acquired taste.
Yeah, I certainly wouldn't say it's more fun than riding a MTB on similar trails, but it's definitely entertaining!
don't forget to be Mo Awesome lol
I still think you should consider trying out a bunch of the other regional trail areas (ahem LA). Plenty of variety within a couple of hours drive. 🤘
We've spent a bunch of time in Los Alamos both at the park and on the town trails. Super awesome stuff down there for sure, but driving 1.5 hrs vs riding from the house 🤷♂️
You should try for a trail KOM with the road/gravel bike
I saw this on Strava and I was so confused
Talk about tire advertising! There was a few times I felt like you could have lost control but then you here the tires dig in and hold the line.
I ride a 100mm hardtail and my butt was hurting just watching this.. lol
wait, there's a name for that? I've been doing it for ages and didn't even know what I was doing had a name!!!
Have you ever been to British Columbia? There's some amazing gravel riding in British Columbia, Canada!!!!!!!!!
We haven't done any gravel riding the, bit we've ridden MTB up there a bunch! Love it!
Man I wish we have land like that
Nice bike
Going 'aaaaaaaaaaah' over bumps. Not just me then. 😁
AAAAaaaaaaAAAAaaaaaAAAAaaaahhhhh 😁
Please consider that if you're always on the drops, then maybe your handlebars are too high.
🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽👍🏽
I love how fast Macky is on these trails with a gravel bike. How much more efficient were you riding this on your gravel set up compared to your XC set up?
I wondered if I would get some KOMs because I felt like I was going fast, but I didn't get any, so I'm thinking that the benefits of better traction from bigger tires and smoother riding from the suspension outweighed the difference in weight and stiffness.
Ive got an aluminum roadbike that's got mountainbike style straight bars. Guess if you swapped the 1.25tyres.... But. I jumped an old kids bike over small hills. Steel fork, slightly curved. That felt better than the aluminum bike Going down a curb. Im not keen on breaking my roadbike i think
Awesome! What pressures did you run? I run 30-35 on my 37mm Riddlers depending on conditions.
Yeah I'm curious too.
I ran 45 in the front and 50 in the rear. Probably could have gone lower in the front but hit rim a couple times on the back so I would be nervous to go lower
@@sydandmacky Y, that makes sense for someone that's hitting those rocks at 25mph :-)
time for a new intro
Nice video 👍You're strong, top skils. Just be careful , the carbon fork or steer tube can break . Gravel was not specified for trails.
My english is not top but hope you understood.
Fortunately Niner tests *all* their bikes (including their gravel bikes) to MTB standards!
Now try installing fat 650b tyres on your gravel bike and riding those trails!
Have ridden all my local trails on a fixed gear road bike with steel clips and straps. After a while, and some broken toes, the novelty wears off.
Why do you use bottle caps as stem cap covers
Niner YAWYD bit.ly/35rZi89
I flatted my 2.8 in the first 2 miles at Rift Valley. No clue what I hit. Nice job on those skinnies!
Hey guys I know your sponsored by vittoria tires and I want to know your opinion on the Morsa? thinking about getting a pair.
It's okay, but we prefer the Martello -- more traction and similar rolling!
Carbon forks on mtb scares me. How much abuse can they handle? Like to see a test.
I know im super late but thats insane. I live in my van with my 2 bikes and my dog, when I was in Taos last month I was bored of my full suspension. I hopped on my gravel bike to have some fun and rode a local trail. Here a month later I lookup a gravel bike video and see the same trail I rode a month ago on my gravel bike.
Ivve literelly spent the whole day searching orange bar tape but not a single bike shop had it in stock :(
Yeah, had to order mine on Amazon.
Great video! Curious, why the narrower tire in the rear?
That's the standard in mountain biking and cyclocross (either same front and rear or wider up front) because the wider tire up front gives you better cornering and the narrower can give you lower rolling.
2nd. But what difference does it make?
Because all bikes are mountain bikes if you want them to be... :)
Exactly 😉
Think I'd go reverse and climb the road
Did Syd give up biking? Injured still?
I'm still injured
@@sydandmacky Hope you heal up soon!
But did you use tires so narrow because you only had those or it was a choice?
What is the weight penalty for a full suspension vs Niner's regular gravel bike?
Probably 4 or 5 lbs, haven't done a direct comparison... Really depends what you're goal is, going up hills fast (go for lighter) or enjoying rough gravel roads more (go for suspension).
Would wider tires make it better for the rocks?
I’m new to biking in general although I canning decide between a gravel bike or a mtn bike hard tail. I’m learning more toward a gravel bike and light trails like this but it just looks like it beats the crap out of you?
Depends where you plan to spend more of your riding time, roads or trails. If roads (paved or gravel) go gravel bike. If trails, go MTB.
Are you going to be doing the old man winter rally this year?
Haven't planned that far ahead because everything is so up in the air at the moment...
Love riding my gravel bike on single track! Just curious...what pressure were you running?
45 front 50 rear
Now the big question how much eye jiggle did you get on the down hills.
Less than you might think
What tire pressure were you running on that ride?
45 front, 50 rear
how wide are these bars
Hi Syd and Macky. New to the channel. Do you two live in Taos?
Normally we live in our van, but since this isn't a normal year, we're living at Macky's parents' house in Taos.
Since macky would normally have raced the mega evelanche this year will he race it next year instead?
Hopefully 🤞
In the setup you he went 38 in front and 31 in rear. Why? Wouldn’t you get more contact patch for climbing with more tire in the rear? I understand the wide tire in the front for stability but am confused by the smaller in the rear.
Honestly, that what I had so that's what I put on. If I'd had 2 38c tires I would have run that, but since one was smaller, I put it on the back because that's the standard for MTB and CX. The idea being that you want more traction on the front for cornering.
What did you drop of at the post office? Your mail-in ballot?
Sent some stickers!
Hey Macky! Could you explain why you put the narrow tire in the rear and the wide one in the front? I am pretty confused.
That's the standard with mountain bikes and CX because you want more traction on the front for cornering. It sounds like the standard on the road is the opposite -- wider on the rear if there is a difference (although usually they're the same).
Can't the RLT 9 fit 50mm tires? Why not go something a bit wider for more comfort? Like a 45mm WTB or
Pirelli tire?
Didn't have any 😁
@@sydandmacky Ah would be interested to see how'd you like the ride with tire closer to max.
Why is Syd not riding lately? Is there something you guys aren't telling us?
injured
Is your orange bar tape that thick? Or is it the camera angle? What tape is it dude?
Fizik that I found on Amazon. Not especially thick, mostly got it for the color 😁
New Mexico?
Yup
Is it the bar tape that makes the bars so thick or are the bars so thick themselves? If bar tape, which make / type is it?
I don't think it's especially thick. It's just something I found on Amazon because I needed orange!
