Slowhand's tech Dan Dearnley details how amp legend Howard Dumble would mod all Clapton's Fender '57 Bandmaster custom series amps.
At age 76, Eric Clapton remains a major presence in guitar. He’s touring again rather than simply resting on nearly six decades of laurels, and with Slowhand’s blessing, Dan Dearnley-the legend’s tech for a dozen years-showed us his boss’ setup before a September 21 concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Three Signature Strats, Martins, and not much else. Dig in!

He doesn't say that they were modded by Dumble, he says that they were built by Dumble to Fender specs, with NOS parts.
This is literally build quality, solder joint by joint, single flow perfection. Genius!
I've seen Eric play through a Dumble ODS - He sounded great but I remember thinking that the amp was far too complicated for Eric! No insult but he is famous for "turning the amp up until it sounds good" - obviously it is #7...
I can't imagine that Dumble sat on his hands without adding his own take on it.
I always like the era when Denis Cornell of Southend on Sea built his amps, one of which just had a single control for Volume and absolutely no other knobs at all! Best, Pete.
Who cares, Clapton sounds good on any amp.
And he built the cab, did the covering, etc., too.
@@turbo1234ist True, but aren't you interested in his choice, what's important to him.
I installed the Clapton mid boost to a strat in the 90s. I then realized it was basically an onboard boost pedal. So at least part of Clapton's simplicity is that he found a more complicated way to add pedals to chain by putting them inside his guitar rather than on the floor.
I love when cats say they have a "simple" rig, and then it takes them an hour to explain the signal chain. This is truly simple. Guitar, cord, amp. Thank you.
I think his guitars is where the complexity comes in, he has lots of fancy preamps and what not in his strats
@@alexlogan124 Fender TBX circuit. 25 db boost, I believe.
@@rustycockering9925 yeah that sounds right, I haven’t seen the video in a while. I wish he’d go back to a Gibson style guitar lol
I hear it all the time. “” it’s basically straight in the amp” I just let the sound guy. Do whatever. But they alway s have a few pedal. Then the sound guy has a rack of the best delay ,reverb and chorus racks in the world in the there
@@alexlogan124 Not in the guitars on this tour, if I understand correctly. They're Custom Shop Strats but not Clapton signature models. No mid-boost, I don't think.
John is still like a kid in the candy store. He's a great guy
Then there's the folks searching the universe for that one vintage Klon soldered with unicorn tears to make their tone perfect. Lol
well dumble built bandmasters are not far from that
Clapton is like coffee,he goes better with CREAM!
Yep. Otherwise it's a Strange Brew.
Cream was a small segment of a long career. I like Cream, but love his musical versatility. As a fan of blues guitar I admire Clapton for successfully using it to not only transform rock AND blues, but for also applying a blues-based approach to so many other styles of music as well.
Shortest rig rundown ever !!
Thats just a clip from the Rig Rundown
See Tab Benoit’s rig rundown!
He literally has 3 identical strats. Thats the "full" video.
I'll bet the Guitar FX companies really Love ol' Eric ...
Funny how blown away he is when the tech explains the simplicity of Clapton's rig.
I think the simplicity is mind blowing considering how many people have an elaborate setup
All I really use is my old Fender Hot Rod Deville 212 and my Strat with Lace Sensor Gold pickups.
I also have a Line6 Flextone II and a couple Epiphones but in the end, a Strat through a Fender amp is real hard to beat.
I also had a Line6 Flextone 2 plus. It was too much power for me. I loved the tone it had.Now that I am older, and not gigging with anyone,I find that the lower the watt amps are good for me.
I think the real Clapton tone comes from a ZOOM 505II hidden in the back
🤣

Hahahaha
Amazing how simple but so awesome…
voilà, l'efficacité d'un son c'est ça aussi... le bon ampli, la bonne gratte et quand tu travailles tout ça tu trouves ta touche. Bravo ricou.
I was fortunate enough to see Eric Clapton and Jimmie Vaughan in Detroit on their 2022 tour.
Saw Eric and Carlos Santana back in the day at Cobo Hall (1970's) and for an encore both Carlos and Eric jammed. Great concert, too!!
@@michaelgreen5206 Me too, but it was in Los Angeles. Same tour.
"These go to SEVEN!"
I had a couple dumb old mods done to mine as well.
Are we watching a Eric Clapton rig run down ? Really ? Where's the rest ? Oh I get it, this is it. Claptons rig is just that simple.
Perfect Sense Eric. 7 Is A Sacred Number!
Absolutely brilliant
Wow! That is crazy. But absolutely amazing
Boy, that rig sure sounds great!
.....
...........
I wonder when these were built? They look pretty new. I thought Dumble did not take on much work the last few years before he passed.
You’re right. But I’m sure he was honored to do this for Eric. Pretty simple order for Dumble too.
When Clapton calls, I'm guessing you answer.
I think the clip is from an older video from pre-Covid - but I could be wrong!
..."all 7's"...in His word, 7, means completion and perfection. I wonder if Mr. Clapton is aware...
Guitars 🎸!!!!!! Do it!” This better be a teaser
They released the full video on their channel last year
@premierguitarist holy cow I won a dumble courtesy of Eric Clapton!” And a signed vintage Blackie strat. That Eric himself is going to bring to my house.
I just have to pay for his plane ticket. Such a great deal!” 😊
No doubt Howie added the miracle epoxy.......lol. But seriously, love EC's sound and playing, always have. Cheers Premier Guitar.
Clapton casino tour finally?
Thanks!
Tweed bandmasters are amazing. I pair a blackface bandmaster with a 3x10 cab and the same ohmage mismatch as these have, and it sound incredible.
I wish he’d go back to Marshalls and gibson les Pauls.
@@bgvo4373 Really? Should he play Cream tunes the rest of his life too?
What is the missmatch?
I had 4 tweed bmans 1 of the 4 they fkd. Up best amp i ever had i sold it guy wont ever part w it never.it did a very strange thing when jumpering channels.it sounded like heaven or hell.
@@davidkenneth3983 4 ohm amp into 2.7ish ohm 3x10
A video about an amp that they didn't let audience hear. Nice.
As always, the sound achieved is through the hands and technique, not tons of pedals or processing, so all I need to do to play like Clapton is practice about 100,000 hours then
You know there's more to music than the blues?
he still sounded best with a Gibson through a Marshall.
@thehauntedmids nope - his Woman Tone never co-existed with a Strat.
Very cool !
I’m sure. He made upgraded. A few things
That’s “old-school!”
His name wasn’t Alexander …it was Howard. He worked on my Pre CBS 1967 Twin
He changed his business card from Howard to Alexander in late 2000. He was weird like that.
Anyone know what happened to the high power tweed twin replica amps that Dennis Cornell built for Clapton a few years ago?
Tone is in the hands.... Clapton once again get's my accolades
WHERE DO THE MICS RUN OUT TO? FRONT OF HOUSE OR SOME OTHER SOURCE?
Is this the full video?
I wonder what speakers are in them ?
These aren't Dumble amps-- These are Fender spec amps built by, instead of Maria in 1957, by Dumble in the 90s.
Coincidentally, Santana does the all 7s thing too...
Awesome! :)
Wanna here that sound
Were those originally designed as vocal mic amps ?
No, but many early amps had multiple inputs, each padded to accommodate different things. For example, the first combo amp with built-in reverb (Ampeg Reverberocket, 1961) had three input jacks; one for guitar, one for microphone, and one for accordion. Yes, accordion!
Wonder if the tone stack is Fender or Marshall ??
Doesn't really qualify as either one. (5E7 circuit.) I think tonally it's sort of a combination of the two.
Clapton still plays live? Huh
Not built to the 9's...but to the 7's 👍
Auralex GRAMMA under each amp...wow
Nice. The variable of stage resonance amongst rooms is minimized...the booming lows
No Reverb?
I think clapton plays in large rooms eh
Big time info .. MORE ?
I can hear the crystal lettuce
Derp derp derp amp derp derp "wow" derp derp.
Do we get to hear it on its own in this video? No, we do not.
Who cares, Clapton sounds good on any amp.
Exactly, it’s not so much the rig, but the player
So don't throw your money away on a signature fender.
Whhooow!
God doesn't need pedals. Yes. It's an expensive strat plugged ina expensive amp. But... it's a Strat plugged in an Amp. Not even an OD pedal. And his tone is recognizable after 5 notes...
Everyone needs a lil bit of fuzz.
Are you calling Eric Clapton a god? Remember when he said England is a white country and that foreigners should leave his show? Kind of a strange god..
His OD is built in his guitar tho…
So he’s basically
Od pedal
Wah pedal
Leslie/chorus pedal
@@OniDasAlagoas Tweeds gives you that fuzz. They go to 12!
@@letsgooo1637 Overdrive pedals are distortion devices. The circuit in Clapton's guitar is simply a (clean) boost circuit. It boosts the signal, primarily in the midrange, which gives him a fatter lead tone. Yes, it does cause the amp to distort more because it makes the signal into the amp hotter, but it doesn't produce distortion itself, so it's not really an "overdrive" as the term is commonly used.
Please go back to ask what the speakers are??????
Who cares at this point? It's just a generic Strat into Fender tone. Nothing more and very far away from his best tone.
Wer hätte das gedacht 🤔
So they cost 100 times more and sound 3% better. Cool.
When you’re that good the 3% makes all the difference. To us mortals it’s meaningless as we just flat out don’t have the hands of the player.
@@allstopblue5717 He recorded Layla with a Fender Champ. How many times have you seen pros play some POS guitar or amp and still sound exactly like themselves. This is just because he can.
That's probably not really even the point. They're MUCH more reliable than Fender reissues. And they're not 100x more.
Wow.....no guitar playing......no hearing the amp?
When you are the best in the world money is no object for your tools of the trade
A real tragedy, Clapton.
This chap talks & animates like a guy who has heard about a guitar amp & Alexander Dumble but knows not one thing specifically about anything.
What? I thought Clapton was using a Helix
He dials in the 'Clapton' setting so he can sound like himself...
Clapton's tone pales in comparison to Robben Ford IMHLO.
I try not compare one to the other or this or that. It's nice to hear every one do their own thing. It's never been about better or best thank goodness.🙏🎵🎶☕👀❗
What a lame comment.
my dad can beat up your dad. 🙄
Dumble's are overrated. Being rare and some famous guitar players playing thru them created this false mythical great sound. They sound muddy to me.
I never liked Clapton's sound even though he's a great guitar player but quite frankly his sound sucks
👎
The most boring musician in the history of rock n roll. 1 guitar 1 amp no pedals. Everything set on "medium".
Also the first one to plug a les paul into a marshall amplifier
Sick burn bro.....
🙄
@@icenine09 like all the best people. Tookie be very racist.
do those amps go onto tirade about vaccine and migration or something?
John B is the GOAT
There is nothing special about dumble amps....
