  • Located in the shadow of snow-capped Mount Hood and home to towering Douglas firs, Portland, Oregon is home to some of the biggest names in outdoor apparel. Danner, however, predates them all.

    “Charles Danner started the company in Wisconsin in 1932. He realized that if he moved the company to the Pacific Northwest, he could sell the same logging boot for $5 a pair for $12 a pair in Portland, Oregon.” Danner’s Senior Manager of Engineering and Quality, Chris Perrotti, tells Popular Mechanics.

    While some of Danner’s earliest creations were those $12 spike-soled logging boots, the company has grown in the 90 years since and now makes every kind of boot imaginable, including hiking boots, police boots, a pair for one lucky elephant, and military boots, which, because of government contracts, must use materials sourced from the US.

    I live in NJ and own several pairs of Danner. If you are interested in purchasing, pay attention if they are USA made or are imported. The USA models are much more expensive but are worth it. The imports are good too, in fact they are better than most imports, but the USA models are some of the best boots out there. Pay attention too, if they have Gore-Tex. Gore-Tex is keeps the water out but it makes the boot very hot to wear. Unless you are outside a lot, don't get them with Gore-Tex. And its tough to find none Gore-Tex models (sometimes called 'hot versions' on the website, not all non Gor-Tex models are marked that way though).

    I used some Danner boots to landscape. They were so tough I only got rid of them because they looked so beat. As far as comfort they were still good though.

    I've heard good reviews about these boots and just ordered a pair. I've learned there's something to be said about hand crafted products. I look forward to trying them out.

      @@stackmosayless-1669 I've had them for a few months and they've held up very well (as expected). I got some better foot pads which are more comfortable, so that even after a full day of work, there are no issues. I think the only drawbacks to a lesser degree is the weight and ankle comfort (or lack thereof) when wearing ankle high socks, but I take that into consideration and will use a different pair of boots when those situations arise.

    The soles should not be glued on with a high-end boot. They should be welted. I didn’t see a lot of “hand crafting” here either. Every stitch was machine made.

    • @averyj.steele1074
      @averyj.steele1074 3 дня назад

      Agreed about the handcrafted part but goodyear welting is called goodyear because it's done on a goodyear machine, and it's probably the most basic and cheapest way to welt a boot. Also crap for water resistance.

      i don’t think Rose Anvil ever cut a Danner standard hiker. He dissed one of the lite models, and said the bullrun moc toe was perhaps $50 overpriced but decent for that tier (less than $200).

      Nah, I agree they are overpriced but they are still a very good boot. The leather is super thick and good quality and the sole is very comfortable. You can resole this many many times and get your moneys worth too.
      I like rose anvil but he often loses track of why people purchase boots to begin with. Things like indys are bought often specifically because the materials make them more comfortable for example.
