It's Freddie's masterpiece. Now you need to react to Brian's masterpiece, "The Prophet's Song" - it's even longer and really epic.

Cool reaction! This song is actually complex then Bohemian Rhapsody Queen never performed it live in full. It has 11 different sections where Bohemian Rhapsody has 5. Another epic you should check out is Innuendo, it is a really epic song but from their last album. Freddie wrote quite a few very epic songs, he was a great songwriter, this is the genre known as progressive rock. As to the meaning of the song, it is actually a story about a pirate queen. Freddie wrote a few fantasy types of songs.
This is the basically story or meaning of the song:
The song has a narrator, it begins on the open seas, just before a battle. It is that calm before the storm. The narrator's ship is attacked by The Black Queen, she is a pirate Queen. The term blue powder money gives this away among other things. Blue Power Monkeys is the term used for the people who used to shoot the cannons on a ship, it was a small space and the gunpowder residue made them appear blue in the face. "The term blue powder monkeys praying in the dead nigh", refers to those soldiers being fearful of a battle. "Water babies singing in Lily-pool delight is nicer things think about before battle. "Take this, take that, bring them down to size," this is the Black Queen giving out orders.
The Black Queen wins the battle, she captures them and then she tortures them. Using oil and sugar is a torture method, oil is poured over the person and you rub with sugar over the skin, you can imagine that might become quite painful with more unrefined sugar. She also has their finger and toe nails pulled out, that is why they are black. "Make this, make that, keep making all that noise," they are screaming in pain, but their screams make no difference to her.
"Ooh, now I've got a belly-full," the Black Queen says that it is enough torture for now. Instead she seduces the narrator, to join her side, "you can be my honey-chile". The next part is the narrator debating with himself if he really wants to joins the Black Queen, "In each and every soul lies a man and very soon
He'll deceive and discover." He would have to deceive or betray his side.
But in truth it is an easy choice. The narrator actually admires the command of the Black Queen. "I'm lord of all darkness, I'm Queen of the night
I've got the power, now do the march of the Black Queen." The narrator gives his fealty to The Black Queen, "I'll be what you make me, I'll do what you like
I'll be a bad boy, I'll be your bad boy
, I'll do the march of the Black Queen." He completely surrenders to her powers, and he is happy with his choice.
"She boils and she bakes, and she never dots her "I's." That tells us that the Black Queen is perhaps not such a bad person as we are made to believe. She is just someone on the opposing side.

Such a glorious masterpiece! It ends like that because it transitions right into the next song, "Funny how love is." In their early work, they wrote a lot of fantasy/mythology themed songs. In fact, when Freddie was a kid, he and his sister created their own "Tolkien-esque" fantasy world called the Kingdom of Rhye and told her stories, etc. Some believe Freddie took those childhood memories and wove them into his songs like "Lily of the valley", "Nevermore", "ogre Battle", "my fairy king". That world is most prominent in the song "The seven seas of rhye". ruclips.net/video/NicAtWbLGJ8/видео.html Live at the rainbow is fantastic and Roger's backing vocals are insane!

The bands original idea for their songs was to make fairytales in music form. Look at the stage costumes Freddie made for them during those first two albums and you can clearly see the fairytale elements.

    • @celticpoet21
      @celticpoet21 6 месяцев назад

@@FuzzyFoot58 Really? Cool! Given how many fantasy/mythical/fairytale gems made the final cut, I gathered that might have been the case, if not just writing whatever ideas came up and running with them. As hard as choosing a favorite album is, I definitely love their first three albums. They are beautiful, brilliant displays of their cleverness, taste and creativity etc.
I definitely love their early costumes, especially Sir Brian's renaissance-esque costumes and Freddie's homage to the Roman God Mercury with the wings on his ankles and wrists (among others).

Freddie was a Zoroastrian, an ancient religion that deals a lot with duality, the existence if good and evil in ourselves and the universe. I see a lot of references to that in many of Queens songs, particularly in the album Queen II, which this song is from.

Queen is always lit - adding a bolt of lightening to every genre touched. You had a burst of insight on this tune - you were lit too! Try "In the Lap of the Gods," Live at the Rainbow Room, 1975. It's 1 of a 4-song medley at that show. This song morphs into different Live variations over the years, but this one is where it began. Not as musically complex as Black Queen but passion driven.

  • @geraldhallahan5270

Old Queen is so underrated and completely nuts. I think the most bananas thing they ever recorded is a 3-song cycle on Queen II (the same album as "March of..."): "Ogre Battle---Fairy Feller's Masterstroke----Nevermore". It's ridiculous. Might be a little long to react to (about 8-9 minutes) but check it out on your own time at least. It's insane even for their standards. Great channel!

Innuendo - It's a bit pretentious but magnificent! It was the lead single from Queen's album 14th studio album, Innuendo which was released just before Freddie's death. The song was inspired by the Led Zepplin song Kashmir and by Freddie's illness. It deals with mankind’s inability to live with each other and a constant search for meaning.

    • @FuzzyFoot58
      @FuzzyFoot58 6 месяцев назад

It also questions the existance of gods and their failure to guide mankind and inability to provide comfort.

This was early when they were doing a lot of "fantasy" themed music. Remember they never explain their music, even to each other except in very general terms. Just enjoy and make it anything you want. If you see something in it that means something to you, great! You can't be wrong. As Feeddie said, if you see it in the music, then it is there.
You are doing very well with your comments and interpretations of what you think it means. Well done!

Freddie liked to write about fantasy in the 70’s . Don’t take it so seriously.. He grew up in a little town in Africa. When he was 7 he went to an English boarding school in India. He had a lot of time to fantasize. He hardly ever saw his parents or his little sister. But he had a band in school and he played the piano by just listening to the songs on the radio so he was popular even he was shy and lonely.

hey don't know if you read comments, but the meaning behind this song is extremely obscure. you might get a real kick from it. It's actually sort of a story from Freddie's own perspective. It tells the story of an African woman who owns a pie shop. Everyone in town thinks of her as some big monster who tattoos her pies and bewitches her customers. The main character thought of this at first too, until he went in to the shop one day and met the lady and fell in love with both her and her pies, learning to realize he couldn't judge a person based on the cover. It subtly ends with both him and the lady basically saying "screw you if you can't see the truth. In other words its about racism. The entire thing is full of anagrams and word swaps, mentioning how she "tattoos her pies" (which could be seen as crude, but tattooing requires precise talent.) Even down to a very curious case of a racial slur being used, which very much emphasizes what the society deemed her at the time. But under that was something unique and beautiful in her own right, which they refused to see. Really deep shit for the 70s

    • @hammerhead222

That's a good take on the song. On the song meaning site there is a good one as well. Hiding the slur makes an interpretation a bit more difficult.

  • @TheBlackQueen

The lyrics, like Bohemian Rhapsody, were never directly explained, but the best idea is about a dark Victorian-era British baker. Supposedly, their dishes can control others and make them all fall in line to her. It's most likely a Witch he's referring to, though we can't be certain. Freddie was heavy into Victorian-era imagery at the time, having made a multitude of songs, including every song on Side B of the album Queen II which this song comes from, about a fantasy land called Rhye. This was his own original fictitious fantasy land and he wrote about it a lot in their first few albums. The last in that series was Lily Of The Valley from their third album Sheer Heart Attack.

You tried to stay quiet in that one so maybe you don't interrupt as much on all videos...but this song you should immerse yourself in and viewers can tell what you think from your 'reactions' without pauses and commentary... Annoyed me so much I had to interrupt the video to write this! :)

This song is a very cryptic way of Freddie coming out or at least alluding to his closeted life.
Then bohemian rhapsody is him coming out to his mother. She knew and he knew and that’s full he cared about. It was never discussed.

If I didn't know better I would think this was Brian's song and White Queen was Freddie's instead of the other way around.

    Young people are so sensitive...
You like living in a world of, you don't read so you can't see past your cellphone.
You don't listen to music to the point you feel attacked.
What little is said is mispronounced
    Deaf
    Dumb and blind.....
And I know you've never played pinball...
