The very same thing happened in new testament times. The apostle Peter was arrested and put in prison. The disciples got together and were praying for Peter's release: God answered speedily and sent an angel to release Peter. When they were told that Peter was the one knocking at the door, they did not believe; and told the damsel that she was mad.
If we will not believe, why pray?
