Abbie, you've out done yourself. Your analysis and critiques are always superior. However, you really nailed this one. Total excellence. Note: "Mountain Jam" being separated on side 2 and side 4 allows the listener to place it on a record changer and play 'Part 1" and "Part 2" one right after the other.

I've heard about a legendary Allmans show in Minneapolis during the Duane-era. It was in the old Guthrie Theater, and it occurred on a day/night with a monster snowstorm. The show was sold-out, but only a third of the audience made it. (Can you imagine if there were people with tickets who assumed it was cancelled?) Those who did brave the storm sat in their assigned seats and were scattered throughout the theater. When the band came out, they invited everyone to come down and sit in the front rows. Then the Allmans played their hearts out. They played like they were playing to tens of thousands. That's the true spirit of The Allman Brothers.

When I was in college, Randy Newman came to Waco and a freak snowstorm prevented most people from showing up. I was one of about 100 who braved the ice and snow to see him. He came out, sat at the piano solo, and did his show for us, at one point turning to the audience and saying, "Any requests?"

I’ll always associate this album (and their first few) with the years I spent in Savannah and Atlanta. It’s the kind of nostalgia you can only see through rose colored glasses. I studied art there, made lifelong friends, partied with weird but warm and welcoming people. It was the last time I could be young. Weekends going to the beach, walking around trying to test out the litany of ghost stories (I never saw much) and taking in the sun with a light ocean breeze to calm the heat in the shade. Biting into a fresh peach is the perfect sensory analogy. But it’s something that can only exist in a moment in time. You can’t go back. Somehow I get that from the music in a great way. My copy was in my mom’s collection hiding in another sleeve. The sleeve had degraded unfortunately I had to toss it. Oh ya and I worked for a late night pizza place called Sweet Melissa’s. Greg found out about it but was pretty chill about it.

Beautiful episode Abbie! I was about in tears with you. My cousin turned me on to “Live At The Fillmore” the summer before 10th grade. I was still absorbing what I was hearing, but the buzz about the ABB among my friends, and particularly my guitar friends, was palpable. Then, there I was in 10th grade biology class, when one of my guitar friends burst into the room, late for class, with the news that Duane was gone. We’d lost Hendrix the year before…it was hard to take. When “Eat A Peach” came out, I thought it was perfect. Beginning with the band as they would be, then lots more tastes of Duane, truly bittersweet. I so admired them for not only carrying on, but carrying on with such a sad, beautiful, triumphant tribute.
Btw, the vinyl track sequencing was, I believe, meant to acknowledge that so many of us at that time had the kind of record player on which you could stack records, and when one finished, the next one would automatically, mechanically drop onto the previous, and the needle would swing back to start the next record. Tough on the vinyl, and the needles, but that is the system many of us had. So in this format, you’d stack side 4 atop side 2, and after the beginning of Berry’s bass solo faded, in less than a minute it would fade back in, the Jam resumed.
The experience is much better on CD! 🤷‍♂️😸

A great review! I had reviewed this album on Facebook just after we lost Dickey Betts. Like all your reviews, you make it fun. Those listening to CD have the benefit of not having to get up, turn the record over and listen to the rest of Mountain Jam!
What’s sad is there’s only one original member standing.
I’d love for you to review John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton.

Strong closing. So poetic! Yes, huge fan of this band. Bridged the gap between blues and jazz, in a celebration of improv and instrumental communication. Been a pro bassist for over 50 years. As a teen i learned what a walking bass line was from Live at Fillmore. Great review and history of a seminal band!

You cried because of Melissa, that’s so sweet. Played One Way Out and Melissa, the later myself on vocals and acoustic, and lead guitarist filling in the blanks. Always got ovations for that. Men write these songs because men are far more idealistic about relationships than women. We always desire the queen of our dreams for whom we would give up our freedom. Interesting to see a woman cry over this song. Maybe there’s still women out there not looking for a sugar daddy!

The album is my all time favourite from this legendary band. To me, it has some of the most beautiful, fun and memorable sounds of why the band were at their strongest era. A lot of their big improvisations are always mesmerising live, which is soulful, melodic and addictive to listen to like the studio material. They have made tunes that are still inspiring and shows them at their best in song writing and musicianship. The Allman Brothers Band at their magnum opus.

Back in the late 70s, during my crazy frathouse days (the house near Washington square park where Edgar Allan Poe once lived), a bunch of us found out the Allman brothers band was going to play a surprise unannounced gig at the lone star cafe (13th St 5th Ave the bar with a giant iguana on the rooftop). We got really close to the stage, and sure enough, the band came on, and we were drunk by then & cheering like it was the super bowl. It was the whole band, minus Gregg who was partying with Cher at studio 54. So Dickie Betts was in charge, and he mostly played stuff from eat a peach while he bummed cigarettes from us, and even paid for one round of beer. It was absolutely amazing, and I'm sure Duane's spirit must've been smiling down upon us all on that magical night. The high points were In Memory of Elizabeth Reed & Rambling Man, and by then we were going nuts. Afterwards, we met them outside the entrance, and in a real 70s moment, Jaimo pulled out a big fat joint and passed it around while we stood in circle. So we not only drank with the band, but got stoned with them too. Sorry I didn't have this ready for eat a peach, but if you ever cover Brothers & Sisters, you can use this story for that video. And Yes, you really did a great job of paying tribute to Duane & Berry, only a real life Layla could've pulled that off. Now for another blue sky Monday 🌞😎

I’ve been waiting for you to review Eat A Peach for a long time. I knew it was eventually going to happen because you’ve clearly expressed admiration for Duane Allman in other videos (ie your Layla episode). Glad you got around to it. Allmans are my favorite.
You did a great review here, but, unfortunately, you missed some of my favorite rock’n’roll stories on this one. Specifically the story behind ‘One Way Out’.
If you check out Gregg Allman’s autobiography My Cross to Bear, Gregg writes in Chapter 4 of a period of time he spent living in Laurel Canyon during the later half of the sixties…. Really, he was stuck in LA with no money and he was couch surfing. This was during the time Duane was session playing at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama, just before he pieced together what would become The Allman Brothers Band. Gregg was basically marooned in Los Angeles trying to fulfill contractural obligations to Liberty Records which Duane had walked out on. Gregg was essentially saving Duane’s ass from being sued for breach of contract, but Duane called Gregg a weak coward for letting Liberty push him around and actually stopped speaking to Gregg altogether because of it. (Yeah, Duane could be pretty unreasonable and cruel sometimes, especially to his little brother).
During this time, Gregg admits to regularly screwing Julia Brose, who at the time was the girlfriend (and later wife) of John Densmore, drummer of The Doors. Gregg only writes about awkwardly being introduced to Densmore at her Laurel Canyon bungalow during the throws of he and Julia’s affair, and about how Gregg believed he’d fooled Densmore into not suspecting anything. Gregg doesn’t really elaborate what became of that affair, but it sounds like his relations with her continued right up until Gregg left LA to meet up with Duane in Florida to start The Allman Brothers Band.
Clearly, Gregg Allman never read John Densmore’s autobiography, Riders On The Storm, which was published twenty-two years prior to Gregg’s memoirs. John Densmore tells a whole other side of the story in his memoirs, and this is where the story becomes hilarious. He claims that he came off the road early from a Doors tour, walked into his house and immediately saw evidence that Julia was upstairs in the bedroom with another man. As he came barreling up the stairs, he could hear someone making an escape out of a second story window. John threw open the bedroom door to find a half-dressed Julia, the window wide open, and a man with long blonde hair, who he immediately identified as Gregg Allman, running away from the house down the driveway.
John Densmore is certain that the Allman’s version of Sonny Boy and Elmore James’ ‘One Way Out’ was inspired by and is describing this very incident. The “man down there” is none other than the Doors’ drummer himself.
Gregg was totally busted and didn’t ever realize it! 😂

Superb review as usual, Abby! I especially appreciated both your allowing your emotions to come through AND your (always appreciated) use of humor throughout.
Re Duane's idea of adding a "horn section": The Allmans had already played with the idea, adding at least one saxophone player (Rudolph "Juicy" Carter) to one or two of their Fillmore East gigs that eventually became the "At Fillmore East" album. The horns did not mesh well, and Tom Dowd found them particularly objectionable. So I'm not sure the idea would have really flown had Duane lived. Interestingly, when an expanded version of Fillmore that used some alternate performances was released in 1992 ("The Fillmore Concerts"), at least one track ("Hot 'Lanta") had a sax portion included.
May I suggest that at some point you dedicate a month (or perhaps one week in several running months) to covering live albums. I would recommend the Allman Brothers' "At Fillmore East", Deep Purple's "Made In Japan", The Who's "Live At Leeds", and either Derek & The Dominos' "In Concert" or Clapton's "E.C. Was Here".
Now "turn off your mind" and "turn on your A/C"!

Greg & Duane weren't just brothers, they were a creative powerhouse, a vortex of talent which was unstoppable when they were in the mood. Their set at Fillmore East has achieved mythical status for a reason. And even though the bros themselves were the main attraction of the band, you can't ignore the talent of their collaborators, too, Dixie in particular, his guitar duels with Duane were also wonderful.
But what happens when the guitars fall silent and the stars of the show disappear behind the pearly gates of rock & roll heaven? In their case, Greg and the rest carried on, which was a brave thing to do, but they did it for a reason, they did it for Duane, it's what he would've wanted...
Understanding the backstory of this record has opened up my eye to just how much dedication some musicians have to honour their bandmates, and I think the fact that this album exists in the first place, and the fact they made it with his legacy in mind is incredibly wholesome.
    Music is beautiful ❤

I think they did exactly the right thing by splitting the jam over two record discs. Back in the day, we'd often stack albums rather than turning them over, so by splitting it up this way, you could hear the parts together if you wanted (with just a few seconds for the other disc to drop). I'm not sure if you caught that! But yeah, they cut in a random spot... But, don't let this sound like it wasn't a great review - it was.

Us oldies had record players that had a big tall spindle and disc holding arm that let you stack up albums, so when one side would finish, the needle arm would go back off the disc and the next disc on the stack would drop down. Like a primitive playlist queue. Why is this relevant? “Hey, man… Mountain Jam is too long for one album side. Wait! Dude! Put the first half on side TWO and the second half on side FOUR and stack ‘em up on top of each other! That way we don’t have to get off this couch!” “Duuude… that’s genius…” It was not uncommon for classical, jazz or experimental albums to use the same trick to let the listener enjoy up to 45 minutes with minimal interruption. Have a look at “stackable, multi-stack or stack-o-matic “ record players. Beautiful old things. Love your channel and your deep analysis. Keep doin what yer doin!

I would love to see you analyze the ABB debut album, which I think is their best. To think Gregg WROTE those songs at 21 and SANG them with that voice at 21 is mindblowing, even 55 years later. How adept at learning was Duane? Duane is famous for being a phenomenal slide player, even from their debut album in 1969. However, per Gregg's autobiography, Duane had only started playing slide after hearing Taj Mahal's record from 1968 with Statesboro Blues that had Jessie Edwin Davis playing slide. If you listen to the two versions, it's clear the ABB version is an homage to the Taj Mahal version. But then you realize Duane had only been playing slide for a year when the rest of the world began viewing him as "the best" at it. That being said, I am a huge fan of both Clapton and the ABB and a huge fan of Layla and other assorted love songs but.... I am one of the few who is not of the opinion that LAOALS became epic because of Duane's appearance. The track order of LAOALS is pretty much the order in which the materaial was recorded and per Bobby Whitlock, they had the first 5-6 songs (I Looked Away thru Andyday) on tape before they attended the ABB show and invited Duance back to jam then participate in the rest of the sessions. Also, it can be argued that whatever hole Duane left in the slide guitar universe in the rest of the 1970s was more than adequately covered by Lowell George of Little Feat. Great analysis on all of these. I think I've watched 40 of these in the last week.

Hey, Abby, just saw your vid, and I've been catching up with your channel. Great stuff. I want to thank you for this one, I have TRGOF so I only have highlights (at best) of this LP. I really need also to thank you for your PSA on motorcycle safety...I have a cousin we lost back in '94 (I know, you were five years out from this sad beautiful world of ours) who could have benefited from a message like that, so that really resonates with me. Don't be embarrassed by showing your emotions, this stuff affects more people's lives than any of us realize. HAPPY B-DAY, and keep up the GREAT WORK!👌

You are absolutely wonderful. I saw them twice with Duane once at Fillmore E and then in central park. Skydog just standing there playing, eyes closed--no one like him, my favorite lick is when he hints at clang clang clang goes the trolley, twas then to me he became Immortal.

Berry Oakley's bass on Melissa is often overlooked. I was transposing the song for a guitar student and while in my headphones I fell for Oakley's bass lines.

The timing is fantastic I hear the album for the first time a little less than a week ago and fell in love with it, so I naturally listened to it 12 more times and bought the record, just to see the teaser a few days ago. When I tell you I was excited, I mean it!

I'm so glad you made a video about this album! One of my top 10 albums of all time. As for the weird sequencing of the album, they were just following the "psych rock" LP format of the time. That being: shorter songs first, then end the album with a long jam. From their perspective, a double album would be: short songs -> Jam then LP 2 short songs -> Jam. While it makes sense to us modern listeners to put all the short songs on one LP and MJ on the other, no one had ever released an album (or song!) like that and the label would never have agreed to it.
Thanks for your touching and emotional review of this amazing album! Maybe a Grateful Dead album in the future?

It shouldn't be forgotten that Tony Glover was a master musician in his own right. As a member of the folk blues trio Koerner, Ray. and Glover he brought delta blues to the attention of white audiences. The opening riff of the Doors' "Love Me Two Times" was inspired by KR&G's "Southbound Train".

Unfortunately, 'Ramblin' Man' is the tune that would forever brand the ABB as "southern rock". I'm glad that you got to experience the magic of 'Les Bres'. These guys were jazz and soul musicians at heart.

Hard for me to pin down my.feelings about the Allman Bros. Fillmore and Peach present landmark works or their genius. But they also represent a taste of what will never be, and that's the hardest part to accept. As much as I love Southern Rock, it does carry with it heavy weight. But no weight is more difficult to bear than the loss of Dwayne.

I bought the Eat A Peach LP when it first came out after reading about it in Circus Magazine (rock music magazine) and have loved the album and the band ever since. I saw the Allman Brothers Band live twice and they were excellent. Of course, this was after Duane's passing. Great review Abigail!

The melodic sensibility with Duane was second to none. A hell of a guitar player, which goes without saying. One of the best slide players hands down, his playing was right on the money.

There are only a few musical artists that have truly changed how I think about music and creativity. The Allman Brothers Band are high on that list. Their music has made a deep impact on me. Eat a Peach is not my favorite record - that would be either Idlewild South or Brothers and Sisters - but you really got to the heart of Peach's importance in their catalog. A pivotal moment for the band in so many ways.
Les Brers is my favorite off of Eat a Peach. I have a real love for Dickie's playing. It's hard to believe that only Jaimoe is still with us from the original band, though their music lives on through the other band members, friends, and family members who still perform their music.

This beautiful, heartbreaking record has always been a favorite of mine. “Little Martha” is Duane’s goodbye, and “Melissa” is Gregg’s goodbye to Duane. How could Gregg have written that many years before when the lyrics fit Duane’s death so well? When I was in college and we’d go shoot pool, we had very little money, so we’d play “Mountain Jam” on the jukebox. I was too young for the original band, but I was stunned and amazed by the show I saw at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California August 11, 1989 and got to see them play several more times in Texas, once with Little Feat.

Wonderful album. I'm a big Allman Bros and Dickey Betts (RIP) fan. Glad I was able to see the Allman Bros in the summer of 98 with Dickey Betts and Jack Pearson on guitar(s). Jack played in Gregg Allman's solo band and is an incredible guitarist in his own right. That concert is in my top 5 concerts I've seen list.

the productions continue to improve , and is much appreciated on my end for the efforts. with this video , I finally , after over fifty years , was able to make some sense of the Hollywood bowl concert I saw where Betts pretty much played both Duane' s and his parts with Johnny winters coming out, dressed in cowboy black, for the encore , trying real hard , taking the lead , screaming and yelling as he played , but was just a mismatch in musicianship after the almond brothers set.
