    Just a quick note on Jack Kent Tillar (who is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet) ... the titles of his books don't relate to numerology, but to music. In the real world, Jack is an Oscar-, Tony- and Emmy-winning composer.

    Terrific suggestions. Love all those authors/creators. Surprised by the lack of Max Maven titles. Prism and Verbal Control are absolute must-haves, in my opinion.

    • @EruditeMagic

      Prism is very card heavy, IMO. I respect Max Maven as a creator, but Prism isn't one of my favorites 🤷 Thanks for mentioning it, though! I love to hear others' suggestions 👍

    Something by Larry Becker (perhaps "Stunners Plus"), and a second rec for Max Maven's Color Series / Prism, which to me has plenty of non-card material in it... (Desire, Four-Sided Triangle, Pscrabble, Astro-Key, etc etc)

  • @brettf2779
    @brettf2779 3 года назад +3

    Also, I would personally follow Max Maven's advice to not read Practical Mental Magic and go read the Jinx itself. As he noted, don't let someone else tell you what they think is the best material, but determine from the Jinx itself what interests and suits you. Also there is a lot of stuff in the Jinx that's a hoot.

    • @EruditeMagic
      @EruditeMagic  3 года назад +1

      I *love* the Jinx, but it can be overwhelming. However, for advanced students, 💯 agreed. You're right, though, there's so much more to The Jinx than the tricks: show reviews, business cards, gossip, drink recipes, etc. 😍

      @@EruditeMagic No,I am more a hobbyist.I have Encyclopaedia of mentalists and mentalism book.Ive always been interested in magic since I was young (60 now!).I luv magic and magic books.I like to know how things tick!I have never had the desire to perform to a large audience.I have done many tricks for my poor suffering wife,family etc but mainly to see if I’ve accomplished the particular trick I was studying.Being able to do a trick that I’ve studied gives me satisfaction.My skill level is really at about Nick Trosts subtle card creations level.No knuckle busting stuff.Nick Trosts books seem to lift a beginner learning sleights nicely into the lower intermediate level,clever stuff,that’s why I like those particular books.Mentalism is more presentation and character I think.Its possibly seen as more spiritual.To me it’s really still trickery but more patter but again I find all branches of magic and magic books highly intriguing,interesting and fun as it can bring a lot of happiness to people if done right.

    I bought a Ted Leslie DVD a few years back. Mainly for a particular effect that was advertised on the box. Which was a transposition of a page of a book into a sealed envelope. I was very disappointed that when it came to the the explanation of the method he said just refer to his particular envelope design. Which I'd have to pay for if I could find it. If you're going to sell a series of effects then you should not have any effects that you're not willing to explain. It was basically the only valuable effect other than the bending wine glass illusion. Which also required some sort of mechanical ability that is also unexplained. That is my big gripe with Ted Leslie. There I said it.
