Because of the ancestry they share with Tibet. In general the only difference in the Tamang dress we see today with what he is wearing is the Chupa. Instead of Chupa they wear a sleeveless jacket made of brocade . And the Tamang Hat. The shirt and the pant are similar.

As me being from Gorkha community(INDIAN NEPALI) i felt really proud when he won even though I was a small kid😂❤️. Watching him now brings back all those good old memories.
