@@jessegriffin2029 Hi Jesse, thanks for making a request. Griffin is already on my list. I appreciate your patience as I make my way through the names ahead of it on the list. Kind regards, Barry
Hi, this is my first time listening to this episode, and I was excited to hear Morris. My mother was a Morris, and my maternal grandparents were Morris 2nd cousins. I am looking to connect with any Morris, Vann, Bell, McCurdy, or Diamond cousins.
Wonderful info as always! Think you've covered all my family main names. But so many others have mingled over the years. Looking forward to your future episodes.
My grandfather's brother, Carl Ellison had a son named Carl Grayson Ellison. He attended Furman University and was a genealogist and preacher. He searched our Ellison bloodline back to the original settler who was named John Ellison, who came to Jamestown, VA in 1622 from Lanark County Scotland. He wrote and published a book in the 1980's titled Allison Ellison Scottish Cousins, which can be found on Google. Our ancestor, who was of the 6th generation, moved from VA to SC. My grandfather was named Robert Lewis Ellison and he moved to NC in the 1920's from Williamston, SC. Williamston is in Anderson County between Anderson and Greenville. There are many, many Ellisons in that area, as they have been there since the 1700's.
There are 2 postings of his book One of them is 600+ pages and is incomplete. The other one shows all 1000+ pages. My father is generation #14 and can be found on page 628 and he is #3193. His name is Bobby and I am listed as his 3rd child #4435. I was born in 1956. My grandfather was Robert Lewis, his father was Robert Jackson, his father was Greenlee, his father was Miles, etc.
@@robertellison4691 very cool, thank you for sharing! I cannot seem to break my Ellison brick wall. I have a 4th great grandfather Hogan Ellison born 1805 who shows up in McCracken County KY. He says in census records he is from North Carolina but I can't find his father. I have some leads through DNA that give me some ideas but nothing definitive. Would love to chat more about this!
@@amyprice1224 Hogan Ellison isn't listed in our book, neither is Mc Cracken County Kentucky. There is a list of names and places that are listed at the end of the book. There are other Ellisons listed in KY that are related to my specific bloodlines, but not in McCracken County. There aren't many Ellisons in NC as compared to SC and VA. The Ellisons in NC came from those 2 states. Hogan probably was related to the Ellisons that were from VA that didn't move to SC. There is another line of Ellisons that settled in SC in the 1700's that came from Ireland instead of Scotland. His name was Robert Ellison also. My 6th generation ancestor that move from VA to SC was named Robert Ellison also. He and his brother named Hector moved to SC, but his other brothers and sisters remained in VA. Some of the first generations moved to MD also. Hogan was probably decended from one of those families. It can get very confusing. Best of luck to you tracing him
I found a Hogan Ellison that was born in 1805 and died in Sacramento Mahlenberg KY in 1853. His father was named Akiss Ellison who was born in 1775 and died in 1839. Akiss' father was named Jesse James Ellison and his mother was named Ann Garrett. Akiss' father was Jesse James Ellison and his mother was Sarah Catherine Roark. Akiss' and Sarah were married in 1817 in VA. They had 3 sons and 1 daughter.
Really enjoying your videos. My history contains Owens, Harvells, Robbins, Maness, Davis, Graves and Lewallyns. The Maness is German and can be spelled different ways. I was pleased to hear you talk about many of family names all ready. I would like to hear more on the Robbins, Graves or Maness families if you find it useful to your videos. I know most of these families were in NC since the 1700s. Thank you so much for these interesting talks.
Tarheel, I have already covered Graves and Davis (Episode 14) and Owens (Episode 1)/ I have the others listed. I appreciate your patience as a I work through the names that are in front of them. Barry
Bev, I see that you are leaving notes with the time for specific names. I have all the names and their episodes written down. There are close to 700 of them. Would you like that list?
Awesome. Thank you for the information on Morris. I bet your double great grandmother was a sweet lady. My Granny's first name was Elizabeth. We are in Georgia!
That is awesome! She married Enoch Voyles, who was stationed in Knoxville early in the Civil War. They moved to the area where North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. I wonder if she had relatives in Georgia? Thanks for commenting! Barry
@@BarryVann that is something to think about. I do wonder if she did in Georgia as well. My Granny's maiden name was Riggins. Some of her relatives first names included a Judas and King Solomon, their legit names. The biblical names are heavy here for sure. My ancestral roots run deep in the area of Georgia I am at. Thanks for the correspondence! 😊
We have yet another connection as my mother was a Morris, and both my grandparents on my maternal side were Morris 2nd cousins. It is such a small world. ❤ Will you please do McCurdy found in Chester, South Carolina? Thank you.
Hi Kim, thanks for writing! I have added McCurdy to the list of names to cover. Thanks for taking time to write. I'm on Ancestry, so if you are too, look for Barry Vann. We might be cousins.
I had students named Eldridge! All 4 were brothers. Didn't have all 4 at the same time.😊 Had Caudill students too but they pronounced it Cod ill. Thank you!! I'm in WVa.
Happy to see mention of Morris. My mother in law’s maiden name. She was one of 12 or 13 children so my husband had cousins galore. One of my best friend’s maiden name is Hunt. I am surprised you never ran upon one. There many Hunts in my neck of the woods!
I live about 30 miles from Huntsville, Tennessee. There are names in that part of the state that I have not seen in other parts. I have lived in Georgia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi, so it's not like I have not been in different places across the south.
@@Nightbird1914 no worries! Appalachia is a lot like Ireland. Villages often existed in isolation from each other, so surnames were not evenly distributed throughout the region.
My 5th great grand father was a Gilliland from Northern Ireland, moved to Northeast Tennessee in the 1770s. , By the time the name gets to my mother it is spelled Gillin. Its a fine example of the change in Celtic names in Appalachia. It would be a good name to put on your program.
How about Gillenwater? One of my pre civil war lines from southern VA is Gillenwater, a name I had never hear in my life until I researched my family tree.
Thank you for working your way thru the ever-growing list. I've already made a couple of requests, but I was wondering if you'd heard the names Midkiff or Rippetoe before? I'd assume these are not too common.
Michael, I have Combs on my list to cover. It's one of the most requested surnames. Eastern Kentucky has dozens of Combs families. I wonder if they are some of your relatives? Barry
It was interesting to hear my family’s name of Hunt. I know my line isn’t related to the other Hunts. Our line came from on Canada through Vermont. When I saw the photo you used I was surprised to not hear Sutton. That was my late wife’s mothers side. Dad was a Kernea would be interesting to know about those families
Hi Barry, I also look forward to seeing your videos! I've learned much. I'm already on your list for the family names Nolan and McClain, both families were here before the revolutionary war and lived in KY and Tenn, but I'd love to add one more please, my grandfather family name Jaynes, from N.Carolina ? Have no info about it. I know it's way,way down on the list, but any info we'd love to have it. Thank you, and keep up your great work. Your are working hard for sure. Have a blessed day 🌹
Thanks for another episode, i look forward to them. Could you add Burcham to your list Barry. This is my moms family. Don't know much about them other than they appeared in Surry county North Carolina in the 1700s.
Anything is possible, Virginia! You may have a distant relative there in Massachusetts, but there weren't many migration waves to Appalachia and the South from New England.
Always appreciate your analysis.. Having Virginia ancestors, it's been a brick wall tracing my Surname earlier than 1720, or so, to Tidewater Virginia. Looking for connections for my I-m170 haplotype, prior to that. YDNA has connected a branch of the family in Alabama, where no papertrail exists..
Does the name PEARSON come up in any of these videos? I've watched many of your videos, and find them interesting, but getting frustrated trying to find that surname
Mary Elizabeth Morris is also the name of my paternal grandfather's mama and my daughter's namesake. My ggma was born in Kentucky in the early 1900's. We may be distant cousins!
@@BarryVann She married a john Mardis. Mardis is one of those post civil war surnames that was around Taylor , and later, Jefferson counties in Kentucky.
What about the surname Hess. My grandfather of that name was from southern West Virginia. I was recently in Princeton WVA and saw many families in the phone book with this last name. I know that Hess is a German name.. Just wondering how they ended up in Appalachia.
Christine, I wrote a book about that very topic. They were recruited by people like William Penn, who was the governor of Pennsylvania. The Germans were among Europe's best metal smiths, and they were deep plough farmers. The Scots and the Irish were fighters and herders. The Germans had large families, so their offspring joined the westward migrations down the valleys and into the interior of the continent.
I love these episodes. All of my lineage, on both sides, as far back as we can go; is filled with these old English, Welsh, Irish, a few Normans, and Scots names', no Germans, no Dutch, no French, just the British Isles. Hunt, Morris, and Mitchell, are very common names in my part of the Ozarks. Piggott, Arkansas is just south of us. My grandmother claimed kinship to General Pickett, but we can't find any real proof of that.
@@BarryVann You go West from Appalachia and you hit the Ozarks, same people and customs. When I was stationed in California, it seemed like everyone in Bakersfield had relatives in Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, and Alabama...I wonder if those same families in our regions are represented there?
Family Tree DNA with a Y Chromosome test is the best. I have used several DNA companies. Ancestry doesn't do tests for Y Chromosome or Mitochondrial haplogroups. Barry
Through ancestry I have found On my Mom's side pre civil war on her mom's side Crosby, Parrish, and on her fathers side Studstill , Powell. On my fathers side Graham his mom and his father Holt i haven't found his Dad's moms maiden name or his moms
Take a look at episode 14 (at the end) I provide a run down of shows and their respective surnames. Graham was covered, but I don't remember which episode had it featured. I have the other names on my list. Thanks, Barry
There is a Rutledge, Tennessee, which would be of the same name as your Rutlage. I have them on my list to cover. I appreciate your patience as I work through those that are before your names. Barry
How are you doing dr Barry thank you for your wonderful cultural channel. Although the surnames is too long topic but very interesting at same time there are some cultures don’t use surnames such as Bhutan, Indonesia, Myanmar , and the south of India . The most common surnames in Europe , such as austria have forty one most surnames for example gruber means one who live in valley , Bauer means farmer . Denmark there are nineteen of twenty most common danish surnames in 1 January 2016 are patronymic ending in Norse sen “ son of “ Petersen - Peterson, Andersen- Anderson. France Martin means son of Martin, Bernard means son of Bernard. Italy surnames such as Rossi means red ( northern and central Italy ) , Russo means red ( southern Italy) , Guerra means war . Rarest ten surnames in USA such as Tuffin, bombard, duckstein, stawarski, panchak, mosheyeu , guille , beaux . We appreciate your great efforts as foreigners subscribers as overseas students want to increase our cultural level improve our English language as well stay safe blessed good luck to you your family friends ihope you like my research.

These hills draw imports like...........well, you know. You stay out of meanness and GBWYall!
Yes!!!! I’ve finally binge watched enough of your videos to get Mitchell, according to my DNA I believe my people were from Ireland, which I was a bit shocked by being that my dad & his dad & so on were so dark complexioned, but after watching your Melungeon video it makes sense, plus there’s what they called the Black Irish back in Ireland. Although I do have unassigned DNA as well so idk.
@megzdubv2950 I have met Europeans who look like Native Americans. Most people in the world are dark eyed and skinned. Light hair and eyes are less than 20%.
Really appreciate you taking time and research making these videos . God Bless you.

So entertaining! Thank you for the information on Caudill
One name definitely perked my ears up. One of my fondest memories as a child was at a Family reunion held at Pickett State Park in Tennessee.
I thought about mentioning Pickett State Park, but I thought it would be a bit too much of a departure. Barry

I hope it is a meaningful experience for you, Bev. Thanks! @@bridgwll
Thank you for covering “Jeffers.”😊
You are welcome! Jeffers blood flows through my kids and their beloved mom.
Thank you!! I'm in WVa.
Thanks, User hr3!
@@BarryVann Thank you!!
Muses where here in 1600
That's seven years before Jamestown, so where did they live? Here is quite large.
Thank you very cool
Glad you like it! Barry
@@BarryVann I apologize! You did not say you had not met one! My mistake. I am enjoying your vlogs and learning so much. Thank you!
We can give it a shot, Billy!
@@BarryVann thanks
How about Gillenwater? One of my pre civil war lines from southern VA is Gillenwater, a name I had never hear in my life until I researched my family tree.
Can you please talk about Wilson. My Wilson relatives fought at the battle of Kings mountain.
Hi Cynthia I covered Wilson in Episode 9: ruclips.net/video/hv6P-kjwNHM/видео.html
Thank you for working your way thru the ever-growing list. I've already made a couple of requests, but I was wondering if you'd heard the names Midkiff or Rippetoe before? I'd assume these are not too common.
Tara, I have not heard of them in spoken and written forms. If you want, I can look into them. Barry
@@BarryVann That would be great!
I've got Rippetoe ancestors. The name seems to derive from the French "Rebbedeaux" (Not sure of the spelling)
@@fredcarter6996 I think you are right, Fred. It looks like it was a Huguenot surname.
Interesting channel. Could you do one on Combs. My dad's last name. My mom was Lee from the Tidewater area
Michael, I have Combs on my list to cover. It's one of the most requested surnames. Eastern Kentucky has dozens of Combs families. I wonder if they are some of your relatives? Barry
@@BarryVann They are. Dad was from Perry County. And there is a town in Kentucky called Combs
@@michaelcombs24 That's awesome! I worked with Dr. Margaret Combs for 10 years. She's a CPA.
That's cool, Charles! Barry
Have a blessed day 🌹
Kimberly, I have Jaynes on my list to cover. Thanks for the supportive post, Kimberly! I hope you have a blessed day as well! Barry
Thanks for another episode, i look forward to them. Could you add Burcham to your list Barry. This is my moms family. Don't know much about them other than they appeared in Surry county North Carolina in the 1700s.
Sure, John, I appreciate your patience as I make my way through the names already on the list. Regards, Barry
I know a Jaybo Harrison from Harlan County Kentucky
I knew a guy in high school whose last name is Jeffers. Ihave a male frienf whose last name is Mitchell! And I had neighbors named Hunt.

Thank you for Eldridge. Since it s a form of Aldridge, could it go back to John Aldridge of the Mayflower? Looking forward to Hopkins and Dooley!
Anything is possible, Virginia! You may have a distant relative there in Massachusetts, but there weren't many migration waves to Appalachia and the South from New England.
Could you research Woolfolk?
I’m interested in the Loftis name. Any chance? I’ve really enjoyed your blog! Thank you
Yes! Thank you! I appreciate your patience as I make my way through the names on the list before it. Kind regards, Barry
Any information on Lovin, Wilder, and Orrick
I can give them a shot. My sister in law is married to Wilder. They live in southwestern Virginia. Barry
@@BarryVann Thank you.
Cool.
Could you look into my grandfather's name Colbaugh. My family are from Peter's Hollow Tennessee, Carter county Tennessee.
Good morning, Elizabeth, do you have a family tradition that your grandpa's family was of German descent? Barry

Hi Laura, we certainly could be related. Was your Mary married to Enoch Voyles? Barry
@@BarryVann She married a john Mardis. Mardis is one of those post civil war surnames that was around Taylor , and later, Jefferson counties in Kentucky.
Have you done Logan yet?
I have not covered Logan, but it is on the list. It was a northern Irishman named Logan that ignited Daniel Boone's passion for Kentucky.
I am related to Caudills thru my dad. My mom’s maiden name is Morris she was born in Louisville Kentucky
That's awesome, Virginia! Barry
Muse is a Greek name check this name out
If you know what it is, why do you want me to look it up?
What about Hart or Harte?
Could you research Suggs?
Eileen, I will be happy to cover Suggs. I appreciate your patience as I make my toward them. Barry
It's great to hear from you, Terry! I appreciate the positive reaction. Barry
@@Ammo08 Bakersfield is known as a country music center for the west coast. I think Buck Owens was from there.
@@BarryVann I believe you're right. Dwight Yoakum, who is from Kentucky was sorta based out of there as well.
