He seems to just lob the ball back with little spin, speed or direction, but I read here he's Olympic champion. Was it simply a mistake to play that ball too casually or am I missing something?
The ball was sort of high, so Fan zhendong's opponent would expect him to blast something powerful and he needed to move backwards to counter it. Instead Fan zhendong decided to hit it gently, so his opponent had to rush all the way back to the centre of the table.
You can see that this rally is somewhat unusual. They started to put a lot of tricky sidespin to a ball, and you can see that they both were just returning that sidespin, and even adding more to it. So this was quite tricky uncontrollable ball. He could've attacked it, but there was a chance of making mistake, so he decided to play it safe
