      %99 of vinyl comes from DIGITAL FILES, you are simply listening to SOMEONE ELSE's DAC. and DAW.
      Vinyl IS total BULLSHIT, just buy the file from HDtracks or Amazon HD music streaming.
      Total BS

    Happy New Year, Michael! I'm with you on supporting newer/new artists. Many of them are embracing and have been nourished by great classic music, such as jazz, blues, country, bluegrass, folk, blues rock, hard rock, metal, etc. It warms my heart to see these fine artists continuing these musical traditions and adding their own interpretations and imprint on music history. Another really nice thing about the vinyl side of these newer artists is that you can get a first press on a pre-order and autographs! You can even share your comments with the artists in their livestreams on-line or in person as I have. You can go see them perform live when the plague is over. Here are some bands that I'm really enjoying right now and in recent years: Larkin Poe, Beth Hart, Joe Bonamassa, Rival Sons, Mandolin Orange, Christone Kingfish Ingram, Marcus King, Carolyn Wonderland, Sue Foley, The Tedeschi Trucks Band, Danielle Nicole, Bria Skonberg, Colter Wall, and Dori Freeman. There are so many excellent here-and-now musicians out there who deserve our support! 👍💖🎸😎

    The frustrating thing about vinyl for me is, that most of the albums I'd like to get are sold out and I can't afford the used market prices. So I'll continue streaming.

      If it's of ANY value, many of us thought that same thought in the 60s, 70s, maybe 80s. And, in looking back to at least the 70s, - 90s, many of the vinyl pressings of popular/classic LPs could be poor audio quality compared to the 2000s.
      The great positive change for many newer/all vinyl folks is, at least for many "jazz classics", they are being reissued in superior quality and the "OEMs" are trying to keep costs as low as they can while making enough to (again good news), reissue more titles and in greater #s!
      Is just my mid-50s perspective, who's been buying music since my 70s weekly allowance allowed me to.
      What Blue Note (80s, CV, Tone Poet), Verve/AS, Speakers Corner, Pure Pleasure, SAM, and others are recently releasing is admirable and appreciated.
      My two cents.

My parents always gave me a hard time for spending all my money on records...i use to sneak my jazz purchases (from the great Sam's record store in los angeles in the 60's)through my bedroom window at the back of the house. I spent much time upgrading my hi-fi system and have settled on a combination that makes me smile. I listen to records for hours daily. Ironically my upgrade path has taken me away from separates to an integrated that has a very nice DAC. I now have a streamer so I can explore music more, but there is still no comparison. I'm with you 100%! That is that this "virtual" recording will be the last because the "non-virtual" variant will return, not that it would be the last recording. Perhaps the only really good thing I can say about 2020 was that my vinyl intake was substantially higher than the immediately previous years. From the Ennio Morricone Themes series to several recordings from the rather obscure Ghostly International to simply replacing some of the LPs which I had previously replaced by CDs thinking they would be more compact and less likely to damage (that was a serious mistake). Anyway, glad to see your bright and shining face again after what seemed to be a long, long time and am looking forward to anything you can come up with to post. (Have you been able to connect with Malachi during the pandemic?) Have a much better 2021 and let the thoughts of 2020 undergo a thorough electromagnetic erasing from your mind.

    10:00 - Does the Library of Congress have everything copyrighted? I've heard about things being "inducted" into the LoC, suggesting they may not keep everything registered with them. I work with some musicians who are interested in reissuing some of their old material, however their personal masters are no longer available to them. We tried reaching out to their manufacturers, but unfortunately they discard everything after 2-3 years it seems.

    I really want to do a vinyl release for a classical artist but have some dilemmas and challenges:
    - 33 vs 45? It would entail 3 discs vs 5 (it’s 2 hours of music). A little poll I did was evenly split, not sure if the poll was meaningful though since it was so small. (I’d like to do both, with the 45 being a premium limited edition box set, but am worried about the cost and demand for even a single vinyl version, let alone two, for a classical artist putting out her first release: no matter how brilliant and satisfying the album is - and it really is - can I bring it to the attention of to enough people? This has the potential to win a classical Grammy and sell 10,000 copies, or get no reviews and struggle to sell 30 copies, and I can’t really guess which.)
    - One other surprise of the poll was most people said they wanted the cd to be included (but didn’t care about a digital download).
    - Where to manufacture? The main plants with high reputations (QRP, RTI, Pallas, Optimal, Record Industry) either won’t take a new small label, have too high a minimum order, or just didn’t respond. So I’m left with smaller plants with uncertain reputations (such as Intakt, Deepgrooves, Mobineko, Cascade, Furnace, etc.) How good is their plating, for instance? How consistent is their quality? Is GZ really so bad that I should avoid them? Is there anyone else I should be considering? (Third Man? Gotta Groove? Etc.?) Machang in Korea quoted a really long timeline and high price. (Was appealing because the artist is Korean.) What about VATs affecting pricing?
    - Note: I plan to do DMM, probably at Pauler Acoustics.
    - Timing and finance are tricky. With such a long manufacturing lead time, either the release date would have to be way after a digital/CD release, or I’d have to commit the money months in advance of any release, before I can do most of the work to generate awareness of and demand for it (or collect any money from customers). This also makes it really difficult to estimate the quantity to order.
    - I could avoid the risk by using Qrates or some other crowdfunding I suppose. Might never get enough pledges though and then I’d still have to decide on risking my own money to move forward.
    - Distribution (probably mostly direct mail to fans, it’s hard to imagine getting many stores to carry it, plus distributor+retailer sucks up most of the money) without exorbitant shipping fees. I’m exploring a fulfillment house with locations in US and Europe (records have to be boxed for individual shipping before sending there), might be able to sell through a record chain in Japan, but no progress beyond that. Problematic because the artist’s fan base is split pretty evenly between Asia (mostly 50/50 Korea/Japan), US, and Europe, with quite a lot of interest from Latin America as well. It would be nice not to have to charge $30 or whatever for shipping.

    I just checked out a band he mentioned. Back Seat Headrest. Listening to their first album, "Teens of Style". Man, this is special. Love the influences I'm picking up on. Trippy early Beck. Todd Rundgren's melancholia (and every band who lifted that from him Carol King and the Beach Boys), Cage the Elephant (or vice versa). Animal Collective. Tame Impala. Neutral Milk Hotel. Dwight Twilley. The National's world weary vocals. The songs are all similar and similarly great. It's almost all one song, or mood. It's big. What a lucky dog I am to have tripped into the vinyl guy's RUclips page.
    P.S. In mid 90's I found a rare bonus track Japanese version of Judas Priest's "Unleashed in the East" record. I was thrilled beyond belief. Drove back home to Bakersfield. Opened trunk and record had a ring of 3 inch warps all around it. Lesson learned. Don't drive through Nevada desert in August with rare album in trunk.

    I wonder if you could answer this question or give some insight to this. Why have record companies ignored a singer like Shirley Bassey who has sold 140 million and is still relevant today with her latest album which went to #5 in the UK? She has such a rich back catalogue. It would be great to see some her recordings from the 70's given special treatment and reissued.

    • @AnalogPlanet
      @AnalogPlanet  3 года назад

      She's ignored so the same Patricia Barber record can be reissued for the 8th time. Seriously, Patricia Barber is very talented. I've seen her live and she can also play piano well and is an excellent entertainer. But there seems to be a "fetish" thing among some labels.....

    I usually have a 10 to 20k euros allowance for analogic per year (half off that goes to 45rpm and first/early edition of my favourite albums) but in 2020 the tally came at over 50k. Came across with two large early-50's jazz collections that were just unmatched in terms of B and C names on A names quartets and quintets, most of them are not being repressed because the masters simply aren't there anymore. It was like Christmas came 3 times last year.

    If one more person says “I hear vinyl is coming back” I’ll kill them! Micheal didn’t say that obviously but I’m trying to say that vinyl is now here and now said in the same conversation as CDs. It’s here full stop. Some need to get over the “shock” of vinyl is back and just embrace it. I’m talking labels, retailers and distributors...and especially consumers.
    Vinyl is here and although was on its last legs in the 90’s...it was a blip and things are normal. Thank god!

    I also believe there was a reassignment of entertainment money. If people could not spend money going out to eat or at concerts or movie theaters, they discovered they had more cash to spend on music (i.e. vinyl records) and that help to boost vinyl sales in 2020. I know I spent much more in 2020 on vinyl than the previous years.

    I'm assuming vinyl sales is only higher than CD because the price of a new record is getting rediculous

      True for now but the trend line is clear: soon vinyl unit numbers will surpass those of CDs.

    When I learned as people age they tend to stop evolving their musical tastes, I have made a concious decision to continue the evolution. I am always on the prowl for something new. When I say new it could be Aurora or The Beatles (I have never owned one of thier records until a week ago); its something new to me.
    People who become stagnant are very disappointing, I think. May be goog people with good information, however, limited it may be.

    The Tom Petty box is wonderful but, why on such thin vinyl? Premium price to boot.

    • @AnalogPlanet
      @AnalogPlanet  3 года назад

      If you are pressing a 9 LP box set it's far easier to press uniformly good thin records. The QC nightmare of a 9 LP 180g box set would be scary. Plus the box sounds incredible....

    So many pressings are being rushed out to meet demand. Warping and noisy records are sadly becoming the norm. The downside of the increase in popularity of vinyl.

    Trying to get into Jazz. Because so many people like yourself rave about Jazz and I'd like to discover something new. Just can't. I bought Coltrane's A Love Supreme and I don't get it. Record was slightly warped so I thought 'Great'! an excuse to take it back. Record store owner gave me a $10.00 discount so I kept it. Probably I'll go back and listen to it again, but I don't understand it. I love Dave Brubeck. That's what made me think there is other Jazz out there I might like but I don't know. Took Myles Davis off my list of artists I want to check out. But records are expensive and there are many other artists in forms of music I know I want. Don't know why I'm telling you this, just saying. Trying to get into some new artists from today. An English group called Zero 7 is doing some interesting stuff. But records only available as an import which makes them expensive and take forever to cross the ocean so I'm waiting for a North American distributer.
