- Christmas is here and so are Germany’s signature Christmas markets! Every year, these markets open about four weeks before Christmas and offer everything from food, drinks, winter clothes to decorative items. In this episode of Meet the Germans, Shabnam is in Nuremberg, where she not only takes a trip to the famous Christkindlesmarkt, but also meets the Christkind!
Shabnam Surita, who was born in India and has been living in Germany since 2017, explores everything from German Christmas traditions to Christmas market essentials in this episode.
What do you like about Christmas markets? Are there comparable traditions in your part of the world? We look forward to your comments!

As a Northern German I was happy for the English subtitles at #5:08. I could barely understand that guy
German Eminem
I was about to write exactly the same. 😂
Greetings from West Germany
Also in Nuremberg nobody does understand this guy. 😜
Of course there are more traditions:
- Advent wreath
- Advent calender
- Chrstmas tree
- Mulled wine
- Ginger bread
- Christmas pyramid
- Smoking figures
- Knecht Ruprecht
- ...
Let see, if I found 24 until Christmas.
I loved, that the citizens from Nuremburg stood aside of its Christkind!
Good job shabnam 👍❤
Thanks!
Great video!!!! Informative and also so pretty to look at and listen to! You made me want to go to Germany just to visit the Christmas markets again (I lived there twice as a child and visiting Christmas markets is one of my favorite memories).
Thanks a lot for the positive feedback! Enjoy the holidays!
Wunderbar! Das ist so gut organisiert! You asked such good, pertinent questions of the Christkind, who answered well, and your camera crew and editors knocked it out of the park with this great filming and presentation. Merry Christmas! Fröhliche Weihnachten!
Exactly what I wanted to say!!!!
Thanks a lot! Frohe Weihnachten!
Such an informative and heartwarming video......the crisp presentation uplifted it even more! ❤
Beautiful decorations 👍 I wish I was there 😢
At the 5:07 I need the subtitles even as a german.
That shows how diverse Germany is too, right? :)
You have so much positiv energy, always fun to watch meet the Germans :)
Hi, Shabnam. Great presentation. I too was surprised by the readily available alcohol to purchase & consume on the streets day or night - and the fact the you leave your empty bottle or can next to a post or bin on the footpath for Pfand collectors to pick them up and take them to the bottle banks for refund. We actually got 'reminded' by a friendly German NOT to put our empties in the bin, which was difficult to accept at first. I too love their biers (generally a Helles or Pilsener) in summer, winter, autumn & spring as well as Gluhwine in winter and the occasional schnapps. Looking forward to your next presentation. Prost !!
Thanks! More videos are on the channel!
Unfortunately we cant be there this year but this video is almost as good. Merry Christmas (Frohe Weihnachten)😊
Thanks! Hope you have a good Christmas nonetheless!
Yeah I love this time of the year too🎄🎅
It's a month full of happiness and joy 😊
It is indeed :)
The ritual in Nigeria is borrowed from the British, her colonizers. It is heralded with bon fires, nine lessons and carols, festoons, baloons and buntings, music concerts, christmas eve and christmas church service , visits and gifts from father christmas, and fireworks displays
Good to see Indian exploring the German culture.
Thanks Utkarsh!
So beautiful ❤
Thank you, the place is indeed beautiful!
no offence to the current anchor, but i miss Rachel
Christmas . . . bah humbug! 🎅🎄🎅
3 of my friends died due to alcoholism. All under 60.
So sorry to hear.
An Indian Christkind makes about as much sense as a white European Vishnu. Don't impose yourself on another countries 2,000-year-old culture!!
Benigna was born in Nuremberg and very much a German Christkind :)
Very well- said!
If that white european child is competing in a “Vishnu” costume event, was born in that city which has been hosting the event, then it’s completely ok. It’s all about context
She's literally german
