That flexing technique is useful in many cases. Well, you can also take the height dimension of the failed print and reSlice & print the missing part. & glue.
Loving that "Lost in Space" style robot! Never seen a print in place figurine like this before
Actually, that's not the "Lost in Space" Robot. It's a variation of Robby the Robot from the 1956 Sci-Fi movie, "Forbidden Planet." Now Robby did guest star on "Lost in Space" a time or two, but the actual "Lost in Space" robot is the B9...remember it had a glass donut shaped head and rollers for feet.
Also from the movie, "The Invisible Boy", 1957.

Not only is that robot design very cool, it's also very smart! Great prints too, the one with the pallete plus looks like it came from a swamp or something, it's really nice. Great video!

Yep, I have wonderful experience with a bad MIcroSD card that came with my Anet A8. 5 times my printer would go as high as it can on the Z axis then back down half way then move the X axis back and forth without stopping until I unplugged the printer. Thankfully I had a spare MicroSD card from an older phone

These are great models. I was successful at folding while holding under running hot water. I tried ABS and had even better detail but the hinges won't fold without breaking. PETG attempts were successful but it is much trickier to get enough gap between parts to allow motion of arms & legs. I never purchased any designs before this since there is so much great free stuff available or I design my own parts using Fusion 360. I first purchased Robot S then Robot R. These are worth the low cost.
Now...imagine it in Metal filament and have it rust...yeah that would be cool I think!

Very clever folding strategy! Joel-- you DO know that is a cutely misshapen version of Robby The Robot from Forbidden Planet (1956)? There is a family lineage in the design of that movie robot and TV's Lost In Space robot (B9) -- mostly designed by the same fellow.

Faulty SD cards are a BIG problem in dash cam circles too, not all SD cards are made equal!
Holy cow didn't even think of that but a dash cam writes MANY times!
I bought all three of the robots from Fab 365 after seeing them on the table in one of your previous videos. Printed one on my Monoprice Maker Select with "some success". The folds broke so thanks for the idea of a heat gun...or hair dryer. I do like it when you share the details such as your slicer and it's settings. Being pretty new at this I am not always sure what to change when I am having problems. How about trying the "surprise eggs" from Thingiverse. I have been trying to conquer them and still having little success. OOPS wife said i have to go. Thanks Joel.

On the green multi color robot I like how the body has vertical layers and the arms legs and head is horizontal
If you do want a tool to hear up specific or narrow parts of your print, the Dremel Versatip would work wonders.
I'm excited to see what Joel can make when he gets his hands on one of those new pellet extruders!

I have improved the robot and would like to share my idea....In the download comes a screen which I suppose you are to print out in clear PLA , ABS or whatever.....however just print it out and use it as a template ...The bottom of a soda bottle (in the UK a 2 lire size) has four feet moulded into the blow moulding of the bottle....If you position the template just right you can draw round it with a sharpie and cut out a crystal clear dome window for the front of Robby....great thing is you get four chances to get it right....I used a dremel.

Welcome! Crazy, right? They have a limited number of writes. I mean, it's a VERY large number, but, it's there. OR, a memory location on the SD card can just go bad.

When a print out fails, are you able to recycle the filament and incomplete projects into new filament for more 3D printing projects?

Bei einem Roboter lösten sich duch Erschütterung des Druckers die beiden Arme vom Druckbett und wurden nicht richtig fertig gedruckt. Sonst aber ist alles gut geworden.
... good job Joe. 2 of my 5 printed robots have broken. But I glued them together with Super Glue again.
In a robot caused by vibration of the printer, the two arms broke from the printing bed and were not printed correctly. Otherwise, everything turned out well.

I just saw some in stock recently from Lightinthebox. $377 and free shipping from any option within the US (Orange accents and US plug was the only one with free shipping that I found). I've also heard that newegg will price match lightinthebox.

NerdSmithing there’s been a few posts in the CR-10 Facebook group from people who have purchased from them. None have reported any issues from machines coming from the US warehouse. Take that for what it’s worth.
I just purchased from Amazon last night. I paid 575 with free 2 day shipping. Which is far more than the constantly advertised 400$ price mark but they are sending the cable extensions and an extra 10 nozzles. I think the extra money is worth knowing its coming anyway.

thats perfect for dual or multicolor printing, if it wasn't for all of the wasted plastic that comes with doing it.
In the mode I did, no wasted plastic - but when doing standard 2, 3, or 4 color mode, you DO have a purge block. Yes, always sad to waste.
is there anything commercially available for remelting and turing failed prints, at least single colored ones, back into usable filaments or does the head that goes into printing affect the integrity of the plastics?
I believe there are ways. I have a machine I need to take out of the box that is suppose to do something like this.
How does the edit work for sped up video with sync'd sound after the speed up? My brain hurts thinking about that edit, is a section of audio cut out during the speed up?
I actually have a tutorial on how this is done on this channel! But, yes, that's how I do it. I separate the audio and the video so that I can cut sections of the audio out independently. Then I move all the audio down the timeline up against each other, then use the time rate tool to speed up the video. Usually there's some finagling involved in trying to make things time up properly, but this video lined up perfectly by chance, which was awesome and time saving! If I have to make the video longer than the audio takes to make things line up together then I'll add a music track underneath so that there isn't just dead audio between audio clips while a time lapse is going. Hope that helps!

Hello, I'm not Joel, however, Tinker Cad is popular for beginners. It's web based, and there are tutorials available here on You Tube. If you don't want web based, Fusion 360 is available for windows and Apple, and there are many good tutorials on You Tube. It's advanced, and may not be a good starting platform for a 10 year old. It would depend on his attention span, and attention to detail, with the tutorials. If on Linux, FreeCAD is available, but I would not recommend it for beginners only because there are not so many tutorials available. All of the above are free, or free for non-commercial use. Check out Makers Muse, and Paul McWhorter for a couple of the tutorial series videos, that I can think of off the top of my head.

Cool robots! Though why didn’t the designer just add integrated hinges on the parts that need to fold???..not that hard...I’m not gonna buy it because it just looks very fragile...especially if u bend certain parts...
I think the robot was an exercise in what's possible. All my hinges are still intact. Most likely I'll glue my robots because I don't want them to ever come apart :)

What does everyone suggest for a entry level low cost printer? I dont want to make super huge builds or anything. I just want to play around and learn. Then go from there.

What is your definition of "low cost"? I mean, you can get a Creality Ender 2 for less than $200, and the Ender 3 is looking to be under $200 as well.

I would go for the anycubic i3 mega, the Tevo Tarantula(I own this one), or the anet a8. I highly recommend the Tevo tarantula and the anet A8 if u like to add upgrades and learn about how the printer works more. If u want something ready to go then try the i3 mega. It’s one heck of a printer and I’ve seen it handle nylon no problem.

I upgraded my cr10 with a micro Swiss hotend and I'm having issues dialing in the prints. Any suggestions for petg filiment?

BuildMakeInspire 3D oh, makeshapers. Been pretty happy with it but then I upgraded the hotend because I plan to print reinforced nylon at some point.
Havnt gotten my settings down with the new end. I'm only a few spools in so pretty new to printing.
is it displaying the right temp or is it clicking on the extrude gear at all like its not melting fast enough? If it is just bad quality try putting 2 pieces of paper for leveling the bed it might just need some more space for the filament to hit the bed. If none of these are happening then I would be happy to help if you could give me some more detail. I remember when I tried to use petg and it would just not work was not having it I could only get it to print at 230 C. I might take another shot at it instead of have it just sitting in a drawer.
BuildMakeInspire 3D I think I have retraction distance too far. I think it pulls the end of the filiment through the heat break and then balls up and jams into the feed and dosnt get to the nozzle. Temperature is fine and checks out.
I have bed leveling mastered and even check the printer z axis to make sure each motor is in lock step with the other but I'm having issues with eather the jamming in at the heat break or too much oozing and globbing. I have costing enabled and that helps then I tried a print to help calibrat retraction but I'm still having issues getting it just right.
If you have recommendations for costing and retraction that would probably help a bunch.
I use a 7-10 retraction length, speed of 50mms, z hop .1, minimal retract 1.5mm, and I usually don’t have to use costing, but when I do it’s set at like .5mm. This is for my printer and my PETG tho. Your retraction depends on how sticky your filament is. I use hatchbox PETG cuz it’s usually not sticky at all and requires little retraction tweaking.
Damn, you prob. Spend a hugh amount of money just buying filament, or is alot of it from sponsors?
I get quite a lot from sponsors and companies wanting to promote their products. However, I'll also buy filaments I just really want :)
