That haunting Pino Donaggio theme (very different from his lush orchestral scores for "Carrie" and "Dressed to Kill") is a sly vamp on Tangerine Dream's popular electronic soundscape for "Risky Business" from the year before (1983).
De Palma was the eighties Tarantino. A guy who made flicks for sexually tense and confused young male adolescents. There will always be a home for directors like this, in their hearts and loins.
Well deserved Kermode-ing for Body Double. Melanie G played brilliantly in this film, and it really works as a stand-alone thriller regardless of the Hitchcock homages and pointed jabs at the criticism aimed at Dressed to Kill. Now all I need is a critical reappraisal of Femme Fatale, which pushed the brilliance and absurdity of De Palma's Hitchcockian thrillers to their end point, but still managed make the landing.
In many ways, BODY DOUBLE is the best of DePalma's HITCHCOCKIAN HOMAGES. Most go for DRESSED TO KILL, which is too much a rip-off of PSYCHO (only Nancy Allen and Keith Gordon's performances made that one intriguing). BODY DOUBLE not only homages both REAR WINDOW and VERTIGO, but mixes the overall genre from Thriller to Hollywood Satire to true 80s cheese; its ending, while incredibly goofy, really show how a movie can "step outside itself" but yet never breaks its spell of suspense.
When it comes to out-shocking Hitchcock, de Palma is probably about the only one who can do it! Body Double certainly puts a new twist on Vertigo. Also, is the house the same one later used in MaXXXine? If not, it's certainly inspired by it!
It’s outrageous unadulterated trash but done with panache. The score is sensational. Saddled with a duff lead it’s Melanie Griffith who steals the show.
Why not review a successful 1984 film from one of the other 190 countries of the world, instead of an unsuccessful US one? Is The US the only country in the world that makes films? So culturally ignorant it's beyond a joke I'm afraid.
This film is a load-bearing memory in my recollection of the mid 80's.

Just when you think it can’t get any better, Frankie goes to Hollywood show up and do Relax 🤯

The score by Pino Donaggio is so iconic! Fun fact: the movie "Air" uses a Body Double cue when the Air Jordan is revealed
Also the fantastic Homecoming on Prime.

Body Double is far better than The Substance, that's for sure Mark Kermode!
Interesting candidates for a double-bill there!
Body Double is one of those movies that is rather great and a bit shit at the same time... but I hugely enjoy it whenever I watch!

A completely ridiculous film, but undeniably fun to watch.
Dennis Franz was great, he should’ve had a bigger part (!) in the movie. 🤨👍
@@peterquinn7878 He’s great in Blow Out
@ Yep, and Dressed To Kill , too !
I wonder if Mark gets his films free?

Great review, the way you put it makes me want to watch this film.
Naw this movie is genius satire of 80s Hollywood and the commercial moving image as a whole
His other genius satires, Blow Out and Bonfire of the Vanities, are also shite.

Referring to De Palma as "sly" or this movie as "satire" seems wildly over generous in both cases.
Greatly overrated, features uncharismatic lead actor
