I CONVERT MY TOYOTA HILUX INTO AN EXPEDITION VEHICLE TO GO TO AFRICA SOLO

- I decided to buy my own 4x4 (and first car ever!) at 33. Early 2021, I finally found it, somewhere in the French Alps. A Toyota Hilux -the same truck I rented in my previous trip across Southern Africa. Rafiki* was born and the journey to my dream is on.
After loads of drawings and drafts, I ordered its overlanding gears in April, 2021 and started the build in October the same year. The bed rack and the RTT (the roof top tent) have been both installed first. The goal was to turn a simple pick-up into a true and reliable overland vehicle. A few weeks later, I bought some off-road essentials such as 5 AT tires (Cooper S/T Maxx), skid plates (from Rival), a suspension kit (from Pedders), a pair of recovery boards (MaxTrax) and a snorkel (from Equipaddict but will change its head into a cyclonic one already bought when hitting the first sand desert). Also, I want Rafiki to be unique so I got it some special tattoos!

It all began a year ago when I decided to buy the exact same car I rented when I was in Africa. A Toyota Hilux I called Rafiki -which means ‘friend’ in Swahili. So I slowly started to work on my truck. And I quickly got attached to it. It literally gave me a reason to forget about the current pandemic and to completely focus on the solo expedition. I already had a few ideas of the equipment I would need for my pick-up truck so I started to draw the expedition vehicle of my dreams. I actually drew it sooo many times before I realised how expensive converting such a truck can be.
I chose a very simple fridge of 21 litres from Equipaddict. I’m not a cook and I think this one will be enough. I mean, if it’s not, my bad. In the cabin, I’m protecting the back seats with a rubber mat because I’ll put 2 big boxes on it: one for my documents and other stuff, and the other one with all my clothes. Since I decided to stick with the essentials for Rafiki, I think I needed skid plates, a snorkel with a cyclonic head, not this one here. You know how much I love driving in the dunes and this guy is going to be one of my best friends. Yeah and I hope I won’t have to use it. My pair of Maxtrax hiding underneath the rack. I think Rafiki and I are ready to go now. Obviously I added and fixed some other things on Rafiki. The front windows are tinted, I’ve got new headlamps, a fuel pre filter-finally- , and an auxiliary battery which is working properly! Rafiki’s washed and cleaned and I can’t wait to live this solo expedition with my truck. Fight for your dreams, always, they are in your heart for a reason.

Very nice and simple set up, however I will definitely consider 2 major changes.
1st Hard shell tent as it sets up so much easier.
2nd a sliding system for the boxes, that makes life so much easier.
Apart of that my admiration for not overload the rig with stuff and for keeping it light and simple - my believe is that pays off!

Very cool! I love the simpler setup you went with. There are some overlanders with admittedly cool, but really expensive setups which can give the impression that you need an expensive setup to overland in Africa. Do you have a long range fuel tank, or you rely only on the jerrys? I have a soft shell tent and I havent gotten tired of it yet, although im going with a 50L fridge.

Thanks so much for your comment! No need to go expensive and fancy to overland. I only rely on the original tank (80L) and I only had to use my 2 jerrycans once since 18 months. Happy you enjoy your soft shell!!

I like what is at the back of your SUV/truck-"Rafiki" is a Swahili word that means "friend". It is indeed a Free and Wild Overlanding.Only a very bold person like you will can an attempt.. Wow what a dream come true. Yes-Dreams are in our heart for a "reason."
Did you do / install anything to help with the poor quality diesel? I'm looking into buying a similar Hilux as well but I'm worried about the diesel quality in (west) Africa 🤔
