Culture Shock is an international organization and a network of non-profit dance companies founded in San Diego, California in 1991 with the purpose of using hip hop dance to bring at-risk youth into an environment that promoted acceptance, achievement and self-confidence. As Canada’s first non-profit, professional hip hop dance troupe, Culture Shock strives to promote a positive message through the power of music and dance and also through its mission of professional entertainment, education, and community enrichment, all with the unique needs of its communities in mind.
Motivated by its powerful message to expand Hip Hop opportunities for everyone, regardless of age, race or gender, Culture Shock has taken its message to schools, special events and youth organizations throughout the country and throughout the world. It stands out as a premier organization that brings the energy of fitness and the enthusiasm and excitement of dance to all people.
Produced by Culture Shock Canada’s National Executive Director, Marc-André Clément, the Culture Shock Canada’s Showcase, on Saturday June 28nd at 7pm, will highlight Culture Shock dance troupes from Ottawa, Toronto and Washington D.C., as well as local and invited professional guests from various Canadian and U.S. cities. The Future Shock Youth Showcase on Friday June 27th at 7pm will also feature many Ottawa area youth involved in Culture Shock’s Youth Outreach Programs as well as invited youth troupes. These funded youth programs offer several of Ottawa’s “marginalized” communities free youth hip hop dance classes, thereby fostering high self-esteem as well as providing fitness alternatives and positive role models. The ultimate goal of these showcases is to promote dance, fitness and creativity among youth as a positive, non-competitive tool, which helps to build and improve confidence, self-esteem, body-image, leadership skills and positive values all while creating a wide variety of opportunities.
