A great article by Sly Flourish on this same technique: slyflourish.com...

Excellent idea! Thanks for the reminder about Fate. I hadn't thought about that game in a while; it has some great ideas to help with role playing and theater of the mind.
I do this for my RPG settlements in a similar fashion. I'm terrible at drawing evocative city maps and this is probably a way to enable my laziness, but I'll determine the relative geographical boundary of a city, place several ruled index cards adjacently to one another (vertically & horizontally) and write down the name of the settlement on each card along with the neighborhood or district name along with important locations, NPCs, terrain features and descriptions, etc and then numbered points of intersection along the edges of the cards or terrain in the case of sides that don't intersect.
It's actually really quick to assemble a city of say, 10 cards by intersecting point and way more efficient than tracking down individual notes written on a 8 1/2 x 11 lined sheet of paper.
It's also really easy to write notes on the cards when you improvise locations on the spot, or need to write down notes about your players activities or status when you need to.
How in all negative aligned planes have I NEVER thought of this!? This is ingenious!
Great video, Matt. Thanks!
I dunno who got you guys some Wheaties, but EVERYONE from Absolute Tabletop has been on point this month on videos. You guys rock! I had been feeling a bit downtrodden DMing lately and you guys have brought my spark back!
That's great to hear! So glad you're digging the content lately.
Nick Hughes I completely agree. Bravo Absolute Tabletop!
I enjoyed this video and I think this is a very logical approach to combat. I think there's a lot of variety to be created through the terrain which takes the experience much further beyond the "You see monsters, roll for initiative."
That's just what I needed. Been struggling DMing lately so this is so much appreciated.
One of your best
love this I'll deff try it out in my campaign. Also I just wanna thank you Matt your source books for Erenoth really helped me to run the best game i've ever run recently so thank you. I was inspired to dm because of your channel so thank you!
That's so awesome to hear! I'm glad you're digging my Erenoth books. I'll keep releasing them as long as you guys keep getting use out of them. :)
I think I would just write "boulders" and "kegs", requiring Perception or physically going up and testing the boulder, looking in the keg, etc, to identify them as loose or explosive.
Good idea! I'll definitely consider trying this.
Awesome! Let me know if you do.
Ooh, this could be very useful in my next session.
Some of my players dislike grids, and this could be a great alternative.
Thanks. :)
My players enjoy maps and minis, but I don't always like running combats on a grid. So yes, this is a great compromise!
Great idea. I'll give it a shot in my next session
Let me know how it goes!
Will do
Great tips man. I know how to DM because of you
Thank you! Means a lot.
Oldie but goodie! TY my good man.
great video! will have to tey that in my next game.
Let me know how it goes!
VERY COOL! Easy easy to utilize and remember!! thank you! BTW, THAT BEANIE IS EFFING DOPE. You guys should make a onesie dinosaur lasagna.
fantastic stuff, i've been working on a system with something very similar, but this is a fantastic explanation.
I like it - but I like the idea even more of using it along with maps.
Super stuff from you Clicky, really good!
Yeah, yeah...great video. :) But I gotta know...how did you do the swords?!
Emojis are global now! 😀
great ideas
This is great tip, Matt. I recently ran my first theatre of the mind style session, and my players found it a little disorientating without the map (I was a bit rusty too!). They want to go back to the map, which is fine, but at some point I may throw in another mapless encounter with a few cards to help detail the environment. Thanks! :D
P.S. Y'all got any more of them Provokers?
I'm seeing a great crossover from this guy's "Zone Combat" style circular theater map (ruclips.net/video/7_hq7JE55CQ/видео.html), his concept of leading the characters to the important encounters using "Theater of the Mind" story telling so as not to lose them in the grid map or terrain (ruclips.net/video/8Qk0KcM2vGE/видео.html), and this product (could easily be DIY'd) that is similar to Matt's Fate Style Zones to instantly generate a quick campaign narrative (ruclips.net/video/Z99j-TUYhoU/видео.html).
Changed my DMing completely, and took so much stress out. Made it much faster moving, creative, adaptive, and fun.
Sorry this responding three years later.
Warning: The obscure parchment in the top left may contain spoilers for Provokers bleak wrath session 4 scrawled in illegible Drudge slang.
I actually think it was a menu for a local sandwich place! 😋

This is very cool - I have a question though as I mostly play online - how would you do this in Roll20 for example?
I've had some luck drawing boxes and using the typing tool for the notes.
[unrelated to the video but I wasn't sure where to ask] What are your thoughts on ProJared's D&December?
I'm not familiar with it!
tideray I think it's great I wish he covered more d&d material
Do you make any considerations for classes who get significant speed boosts, like monks or barbarians?
Definitely! I would consider allowing them to maneuver behind enemies or even cross two zones with a single move action.
in the monster manual which enemy where the soldiers and what levels were the players?
I statted the soldiers out myself. There were just basic mooks with rifles and swords. Players were level 3.
Can u please post the stats and cr? and thx for responding do quickly it's nice when the youtubers actually respond to comments!!!!!!!!
Check out the guard NPC statblock in the back of the DMG! Almost exactly what I had. Just gave them rifles and shields. :)
How do rifles work?
The stats for black powder weapons are in the Dungeon Master's Guide.
