I’ve taken soy protein since I was in 6th grade competed in Wrestling, Football, Rugby, and did Powerlifting in College. Soy hasn’t slowed me down a bit.
I love your channel so much!! I've gotten the warning against soy consumption from registered dieticians due to a supposed increase in cancer risk. And yet there are studies that show soy consumption lowers cancer risk. Could you do a video on dairy consumption and IGF-1 on cancer risk too? I imagine it's an even more controversial topic
Very well researched video as always. However, I do have one small issue. The rat example may not be the most accurate representation of how soy is metabolized in humans. We still aren’t sure how accurate testing on rats is. Especially when it comes food. Simply upscaling the rats weight to a human is not a reliable way to measure how many glasses of soy milk you’d have to drink. I do believe a little soy here and there can’t hurt, but that comparison doesn’t seem too reliable.
I agree. Fortunately we have many human studies showing little to no effect on testosterone with soy consumption. The rat study was one of a few popularly used to push the soy-reduced testosterone claim.
"despite what the media tells you..." Funny thing, I've seen a lot of the talk on soy to be mixed. Sure, the bias of the occasional off color "fitness/healthy eating" blog rag on soy, but those are so sketchy, I could never tell if they were legitimate, cherry picking, or just a crock of shit. I love tofu. Soy is fine. Glad to see that that's still the case.
Since becoming vegetarian back in December, I've been wanting to try tofu. But with the rumors of soy affecting testosterone, and me being an over 50 male that's only been resistance training for about a year, I didn't want to ingest anything that might kill my gains. Looks like I'll be adding more diversity to my diet now!
Culture and diet. And by diet, I don't mean the soy. I actually mean the rice. A lot of asian cultures have extremely rice-heavy diets, which means a very large portion of their nutrients end up being almost all carbs, and they get less protein. You can see a kind of similar issue here in America, where our diet has also gotten more carb-heavy. But instead of making people skinny and without a lot of tone, with the sheer volume of it that gets eaten here it instead ends up making people flabby and shapeless. As for culture, they just tend to prefer male beauty to male ruggedness in certain east asian aesthetics. Although there are still certainly places for tough, rugged men like the late great Toshiro Mifune.
Thank you for sharing this I've believed this and seen some of the studies before after research, ive been lifting and plantbased for 7 months now and my muscle gains and beard gains have only increased thanks
Bashir Tokosi Peanuts, Peanut Butter (the natural kind without palm oil), Peanut Butter powder, whole wheat bread or flax seed flat bread with hummus, sun flower seeds, natural steel cut oats for oat meal and shakes, pumpkin seeds, pistachios, all types of beans/lentils a lot of people claim you need 1.5g per pound but I get around 80-100 a day and been doing fine and I weigh 170
The real issue is we don't know how much estrogen type substances we consume. It's not just soy that contain these chemicals like this, but our drinking water dose too. Soy might not be a big problem, but lower testosterone from our own water is.
Not sure if you did this already, but a claim that I've heard a lot is that breakfast is the most important meal of the day which is still widely believed. People always tell me that when I mentioned that I'm doing intermittent fasting and thus skip breakfast.

That's all. Thanks again!
Thank you for having clarified the soy issue. Two bowls of soy milk a day, few hundred grams of tofu, 30mg of soy protein isolate a day for me, I've been living this way for few years, I haven't seen any feminizing effect.
I've noticed people supporting a certain thing are often in denial. Ask your friends. They're more likely to be unbiased assuming they don't consume soy..
I bank way higher than that, my testosterone is between 869ng/dl to 974ng/dl, my testosterone has actually increased after consuming soy, maybe more to do with me hitting my protein goal daily because of soy.
@@Tate525 I think people switching to soy food do it in the process of adopting a healtier lifestyle, so this might not be only due to soy, but to the thing you eat with it + letting go of cow milk that is a total disaster for the body. My comment is now 4 years old (time flies!!) I am still the biggest soy consumer ever, I am way more muscular than I was at the time posting this comment and one of the strongest natties in my gym :)
Testosterone is down due to the tech boom and rise in fast food. Adults aren’t as active since they sit around all day at their jobs and spend more time studying as college students, while fast food makes us fatter and thus increases estrogen in men. Nearly every modern study finds that soy has minimal impact on testosterone. Just don’t drink a gallon every day and you’ll be fine.
There is more evidence that meat raises estrogen. Butter, dairy, and flesh are the highest estrogen content foods on the planet. And they contain mammal estrogen, which our body absorbs more than plant estrogen
@@anarchy7741 Maybe that’s true for red meat, but certainly not for white meat. A good amount of fish, shrimp, and other shellfish have been proven to increase testosterone, for example. At the end of the day though, none of this is that important. As long as you’re exercising, eating the right amount of calories and nutrients, and don’t have some sort of deficiency/disorder, you’ll be perfectly healthy no matter what kind of diet you’re on.
@@MK-ms4uz thats so wrong its not even funny. It doesn't matter how much you exercise, if you eat meat, added sugars, refined grains and processed foods you increase your chances of cancer and all cause mortality.
@@anarchy7741 1. You going to address my point about seafood or no? 2. The problem with those cancer/mortality studies is that they looked at the average American meat eater, who’s probably a fat slob who doesn’t exercise or eat the right amount of calories, and compared him to the average vegan, who’s more likely to be looking out for his health. There’s a small effect, sure, but unless cancer runs in your family or something it’s pretty negligible. Also yeah, if you eat just refined sugar that’s pretty bad, but it’s bad because a diet of just refined sugar is calorie dense and has almost no vitamins. Refined sugar in a balanced diet won’t kill you. So yeah, switching over from one kind of diet to another isn’t some kind of magic pill. You’re not going to become a giga-Chad because you switched from keto to paleo, or from pescatarianism to veganism or whatever else.
the trouble here comes from the fact that a lot of people eat a lot of pre-packaged food, from bread to frozen meals it's hard to find items that DON'T contain soy, and considering food companies have been caught lying before and get away with a slap on the wrist, well there's no way of knowing exactly how much soy is in anything, and the average T levels of men today are much lower than hey used to be whether you are against soy or not it's still better to just get raw ingredients and prepare your own food, because high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, artificial preservatives and artificial food dyes like Red 40 aren't good for you either.
Great video as always, I praise this one in particular because it will surely contribute to getting rid of some bro science. :) I've been steadily ramping up my soy intake over the last 2 years (soy milk, tofu) and if anything I feel much better overall and my gains have been more than satisfying. Except GMO soy I'd say it's the healthiest source of protein.
MANLY_MAN PJW It does but the effects of the supplements are too good, like you would end up having excessive muscle and a little peepee so a little bit of soy is in there to still give gains but not too much.
What if I take soy protein isolate? For me as a regular man, I have to take at least 48 grams of protein (based on my weight), which means it shouldn't be a problem, (that's what I understood from your video), but since it is protein powder, I don't know if it's hundred percent safe for me to keep taking that amount of soy protein daily, any suggestions? (I apologize for my English tho, I'm still learning).
This is very helpful actually. I grew up being allergic to milk and I was very scrawny. Everyone told me the reason was that since I drink so much soymilk I wasn't gaining any muscle mass.
He never brought up the estrogen side. Having too much of that will affect muscle mass. Higher estrogen combined with lower testosterone and you'll have a perfect storm.
He picture fit , just wanted to know what do you mean by 50g soy protein, do you mean like 50g protein from soy or 50g of soy in general ... For example if 100g tvp contains 50g of protein , do you mean consuming 100g of tvp ? Also I would very much like to know your opinion on tvp , thanks .
I am an Indonesian - tempeh (or tempe as we write them, reading it is tempe' with no breath after the e) is ALWAYS fermented because it is fermented soybeans. It's like saying wine is FERMENTED GRAPE. Well, obviously.
So it’s OK for my protein powder to contain soy? I’ve looked at other brands and they contain soy? Should I pick soy free or does it make a difference?
Like my chem teacher used to say, everything is poisen it just depends on the amount, you can kill an elephant with strawberrys if you give him enough.
I'm a proud omnivore 🍳🍎🍗🍌🧀🥕, but I'll admit I've largely avoided soy due to the "Soy Kills💀 Testosterone" claim (which I found in an essay as recently as this morning). As a 💯% scientific fella, it's interesting to see the studies putting the claim to rest. As you say at 3:06 : "Moderation is 🔑". Add variety to your diet if you want the best results.🏃🏿♂️🚴🏿♀️🏋🏿♂️🤾🏿♀️
If you've foun a lot of research that suggest soy does, indeed, kill testosterone, a single study shouldn't really debunk all of that. Way I see it, it may/may not, so no point risking it, really.
Jdr Yup. Just did a cursory googlin', and it seems you're totally right. I mean, doesn't effect me, given I don't like soy... But still, when you're right, you're right.
Any studies on it preventing testosterone from binding to the, possibly now occupied by phytoestrogen, receptors? Thereby dulling the effects of testosterone? It's great that it doesn't affect the total test levels, but that doesn't matter anyways if the test can't bind to its targets.
Interesting point but notice the study observing the effects of soy protein on muscle gain compared to whey and no statistical significance was found between groups
Alcohol has much of a negative effect on one's own body than soy products, and yet most these people who avoid soy are also the same people who consumes lots of alcohol. There is a saying on finance, don't be penny wise and pound foolish. But in this case do not be focused about minor/insignificant effects while yet ignoring the bigger problem.
Short term studies are mostly worthless. come back when they do a study of men in their mid 20's to 30's who have been consuming soy for 5 or 10 years. As I am fond of pointing out, I was a vegan for over 10 years. I didn't notice any massive changes over that time, but after about 8 years I was always tired, had trouble focusing and my eyes were getting bad. When I finally went back to eating meat, the changes were massive! I felt amazing almost overnight. I slept better than I had in years, I had more energy, my eyes felt better, and strength gains (as I said below) skyrocketed. There are a lot of things that can take years to have an effect on you, and while soy may not have an immediate affect on testosterone, look at all those women walking around with vagina suits and hats protesting things they made up. from the trash littering the streets after their last protest, they all drink Soy lattes.
You still shouldn't eat soy. Soy is a lower quality protein source than animal proteins. Animal proteins are more easily metabolized for muscle growth.
+PictureFit How about tackling the claim that it's impossible to become as strong as a meat eater on a vegan diet? It would be nice to settle this one for good, since we hear it so much.
Meat is good for bulking! A veganish diet is good for moderate muscle building and cutting. Both have their own advantages but with a vegan diet, if you want more protein, you need supplements whereas with meat, you get both fat and carbs in 1 go. Of course, both are decent for muscle building although most serious/shredded guys eat less meat due to its fat content. It's really up to you. What I'm trying to say is it's not about where you get the 3 main energy sources, glucose, fat and protein, it's about getting it in general. If people are actually stupid enough to think otherwise, they must be insane and I hope he does do a video on this. Of course to set the record straight, some protein is faster absorbing than others but that doesn't really affect anything much. Just wanted to inform all the people viewing this comment.
saske wiske good point, actually. Steak has a very high creatine content (~5g per KG uncooked and 5% less when cooked). Although, your body takes a lot longer to break down your creatine and it ends being a slow release solution instead of a quick burst like supplements so its effects are still unknown.
Unnoticeable effect does not equal no effect. If you eat soy consistently as well as use products with estrogen mimics and endocrine disruptors, which most people do now, then you have a big problem. You can't ignore everything just because the individual thing doesn't contribute much. People who stay away from soy probably also stay away from other endocrine disruptors, and people who eat soy probably aren't wary of endocrine disruptors. That's why you see such a big difference. And it's funny how the people debunking "soyboys" look/sound like soyboys.

As a cultural scientist I am fascinated about the rise of "fear of feminine". Proclaiming the ingredient "soy" as something dangerous to ones own masculinity. Discarding men, who are weak (physically, psychologically?) and connecting them to this ingredient. That's really fascinating Internet culture.
I'm feminized and insecure, but you guys sound like a bunch of Low-T beta's complaining about how afraid you are of being feminized by a bean. No one that says soyboy unironically is "masculine" in the least, secure masculine men don't constantly worry about their masculinity (being taken away by a bean), they just take it as a given. Which I wouldn't know anything about because I'm a soyboy.
i tried to consume soy as my primary protein source instead of meats or legumes, which ended up being over 50g per day. I did notice a drop in drive and aggression, which was unfortunate because I've always liked soy foods. I might give it a shot another time but so far it doesn't seem to do well as a staple food, no harm done if you're having it here and there for variety
sorry but i believe multi studies ran across hundreds of people in a standardized lab environment instead of some random guy online giving his placebo anecdote.
Even if having soy in my diet only makes me loose 1% of testosterone i’m not gonna do it. Keep in mind almost all meats are fed with soy and a lot of processed foods contain soy, so you already are most likely having soy in your diet without knowing. Fact of the matter is we know it lower testerone, period. Wether you need a high amount for visible effect does not matter and its still justified to not eat it.

I saw the thumbnail and for a while I thought it was “kill testosterone” introducing itself in spanish xDD
Stress, drinking alcohol, and not getting enough rest will decrease testosterone the most.
How come Asian men are effeminate? If it's not soy, what is it?
soy, tea, buddhism, and
Soy, tea, buddhism, and a lack of red meat
When I watch Anomaly unbox knives my testosterone goes over 9000

Hemp seeds have like 33g protein per 100g. But they taste a bit strong.
Let's test soy effects on a population that consumes it on a regular base.

even though im against eating soy, that's absolutely true, alcohol also lowers testosterone.
@@Smeaglehasabeard yeah if someone is going to make such a big deal about soy, they should be consistent about it
The real issue is we don't know how much estrogen type substances we consume. It's not just soy that contain these chemicals like this, but our drinking water dose too. Soy might not be a big problem, but lower testosterone from our own water is.
So it does lower testosterone, even if it slightly lowers testosterone i dont want it
lmfao, your testosterone is going to be lowered even more by drinking actual milk since there is estrogen in it.
Only big strong manly men are afraid of beans

Thank you for having clarified the soy issue. Two bowls of soy milk a day, few hundred grams of tofu, 30mg of soy protein isolate a day for me, I've been living this way for few years, I haven't seen any feminizing effect.
Celest i drink 1.5L of soy milk everyday.
@@celest7548 Do you have pics?
I dunno, it creeps me out how soy has gotten into EVERYTHING. And male testosterone has taken a nose dive since then.
@@anarchy7741
Maybe that’s true for red meat, but certainly not for white meat.
@@MK-ms4uz
thats so wrong its not even funny.
It doesn't matter how much you exercise, if you eat meat, added sugars, refined grains and processed foods you increase your chances of cancer and all cause mortality.
@@anarchy7741

There is NOTHING you can say to make me drink soy, I’m not turning into a woman!
Scared shitless of a bean, sounds like milk already did that for you, Maddie.
So it is indeed safe for men to be vegetarian without losing all his gains and turning into a flamboyant soy boy. lol I figured it was exaggerated.
Recent? I avoided soy like the plaque in my teens, it was really making the rounds back then. Got older and smarter, realized it was completely false
You still shouldn't eat soy. Soy is a lower quality protein source than animal proteins. Animal proteins are more easily metabolized for muscle growth.
The DIAAS table classifies soy as "good source of protein" so nah
@@GabrielV65 Sure a good source of protein. Not as good as animal protein.
Dawn Ripper How about the creatine that meat contains.
suske wiske That's a good point, although I question if there's enough in meat to make a big difference
saske wiske good point, actually. Steak has a very high creatine content (~5g per KG uncooked and 5% less when cooked). Although, your body takes a lot longer to break down your creatine and it ends being a slow release solution instead of a quick burst like supplements so its effects are still unknown.
My gains increased significantly ever since I became vegan. Probably because I'm getting a fresh source of protein rather than a recycled one.
Thank you for doing this. This was such a needed topic.
Glad to help.
