When under power, you can nearly eliminate rolling by keeping the main up and sheeted hard overas one might sailing to windward. This can add a knot to your motoring speed and make for a much more comfortable voyage.
Failing objectives on a boat and continuous work sound all to familiar 😇 Sailing alone is cruising, sailing with others is racing! 😀 Beautiful sail (and race) with 8.5 knots 😲 Great video, thank you Oana and Glen!
Glad you enjoyed it Zeger. It was a nice sail after so long not sailing. But we could have done with a bit more warmth! We have finally found that now that we arrived to Antigua yesterday
Sail Cloudy Bay Compared to here (Amsterdam) it must be tropical there 😀😀👍 Only mildly envious here lol! The Atlantic in winter and subtropical temps ... never fun 😇 Enjoy and looking forward to next episode 😊
Sail Cloudy Bay Good for her! Editing video’s is what we in Dutch call “monks work” 😀 I would never be able to produce them as continuously and close to real time as Oana / you do 👍 Sailing is the best distraction or excuse 😉 That said: looking forward to the next episode (selfish I know hehe)
We always look forward to you postings. Wife and I did the Norfolk to BVIs at the beginning of November with the Caribbean 1500. Great trip. We will be in Antigua starting just after Christmas and our boat (Serenity X-Yachts XP-55) will be in Falmouth harbour all winter. Would love to meet you two when you are in Antigua
John, we arrived to Antigua yesterday. 5 days from Bermuda on a fantastic fast sail. we are in Jolly harbour and coming out the water on Tuesday for a few days. Likely we will be here till around 18th. Then we start heading your way via the islands. Would be great to meet you.
Use some glow in the dark paint on the lamp shade so you can find it easier in the dark. Both the sun and using the light itself charges the glow in the dark paint.
A boat is about the only thing that can be repaired whilst travelling. In an RV you have to park. In a house, you have to stay home. In a 'plane you just bail out (or crash). But yachts are admirably repairable whilst still heading to your destination. How jolly efficient!
We are in Shipwright just across the creek from where you were in Herrington North. You can see Night Sky , our Beneteau 46, in several segments of the video. I actual;ly saw you coming in and thought it was a bit cheeky of someone to use the name Cloudy Bay because it is so unique and definitely proprietary. Knew it wasn't you because you were up north in Mass, 'asnd knew that because I had ust watched you in a video. Had I known you were that close we would have dropped by with a courtesy bottle of Plymouth for you and Oana. If you don't mind me asking, who did your topsides? They are absolutely beautiful. And I don't think you stayed in Deale from the looks of the room.
Sorry we missed you. Yes our videos are usually a month behind us. They take alot to edit plus we have to find good internet to upload them. We also have a daily blog on www.sailcoudybay.com which is bang up to date. And there is a button there "where is Cloudy Bay" that shows our current position. We did not know Cloudy Bay was a proprietary name. I can only assume the wine makers from New Zealand? The boat is named after a bay in NZ ( same one the wine is named after) ... I doubt they could make a name of a bay propriety. That said, let them try to chase us! We started with the topsides being done by a guy from Osprey but his heart was not in the job. So we stopped that and took on Red Sky Detailing. They were recommended by the HR dealer there. Not cheap but simply fantastic. Dedicated, hard working and extremely detailed. They really bring it back to like new and they were not going to stop at anything less.
Ha! Proprietary was said with tongue in cheek. Of course it's yours. Own it!. Flaunt it. Take a lesson from our political leader class: If challenged - Deny. If caught - Lie.
I quite enjoyed your video and have subscribed. Good idea to put the leather patches around the rope hole on your canopy. I noticed that you sewed around the outside of the of the patches but not around the slits. I think you will find that as the rope slides though (back and forward) the canopy material will wear away an generate a bigger hole. Just a suggestion.
I enjoy your videos. Especially this one as I live in Chesapeake VA and work in Norfolk. I sail out of Little Creek on the southern chesapeake bay. I just purchased a boat with seldon in mast furling. It is in northern VA and I havent moved it to Norfolk yet... so no sailing on it yet. I am wondering if you find it necessary to turn into the wind to furl the main properly when the wind is up?
Chuck, glad you enjoy the videos. To furl the main in, you need to have the pressure off it. This generally means having the wind infront of the beam. But we have managed to get it furled when running downwind but its not really a good idea.
Not so sure about that. We find the main and poled genoa (with genoa sailed slightly by-the-lee) stops alot of the rolling. With the main only, it always fights the autohelm, especially in waves and gusty conditions, causing even worse rolling. The genoa balances that.
Very interesting because we have just purchased one! And one of the atributes that drew us to it is the reduction in rolling downwind. We couldnt afford a new one (crazy price) but we managed to find a nearly new one. Very interested to try it.
I may need to check my eyes...At 29 minutes and 5 seconds, did you make some sort of hand sign with your left hand? Is that one of those super secret signs or can you tell me what it means? Is that one of those signs you have to deny deny deny? I just finished a great book by Nesta Webster so that sort of "stuff" has really peaked my interest lately. Okay, I have to admit that I actually saw four signs, the first one at 28 minutes and 57 seconds (connected signs perhaps). Okay, carry on...am I crazy?
I watched again and didnt see anything unusual at the times you mentioned. Whatever you are drinking, may I suggest you change to scotch. I find it much less hallucinating :)
Yes, that was a strange way to ask a simple question...sorry...Are you religious (or do you follow a particular life philosophy)? It's not like I called you a Scientologist or a Mormon (I kid). No third-degree, just curious about my favorite OG yacht couple. I am in my late forties, perhaps I am starting to hallucinate. I like to think that I am just a too clever by half. If anything, I am just slightly busting your chops because I enjoy you two and your adventures so much.
Chessy will beat the crap out of ya.. Deltaville is our home port Norfolk is the largest Naval Base in the world, let us remember we have all those ships to protect the free world and deter all out warfare... You missed the U.K.'s new aircraft carrier she was docked at the Base you passed on your way to downtown Norfolk... She was here getting ready for her F-35's
... Aaaaa ... have you ever sailed/raced a "Multi-hulll"??? Anything below 10kts is SLOooooowwww. I have sailed mostly on "Multi's" ... boat speed ... boat speed ... boat speed !!!! ( the fastest I have ever sailed ... 29.9 kts ... and the boat Hhhuuuummss like a swarm of mad bees ...)
Yep, I've sailed on the 110ft cat Maiden at 45knts in UK. Cats are fast, but very uncomfortable motion in the Ocean - IMHO On Cloudy Bay, we tend to be faster than the average modern "caravan" catamaran. And she purrs ... none of that tinny humming :)
I love your videos yet I'd never get in a sail boat...too scary. I live very close to the Chesapeake Bay and grew up on its beaches. I can't understand a word of the lady of the boat. Her accent is too thick. I catch more of the man's words. Sorry I don't know your names because of your thick accents. You're very brave people that I admire very much. Be safe!
Glad you enjoyed the videos. Not surprising you cannot understand our thick accents. We are English from England and we are speaking that rare language invented there :)
ALI Mcally just sailing back into Chesapeake right now. After last night we decided we know why the locals are VERY respective of the sea off of Cape Hatteras. It’s wild there!
Well, we do, occasionally. But the camera doesnt come out then. Maybe we should try that .... "Oana, Oana, quickly, get the camera before we stop this argument and kiss & makeup". Truth is, like any couple, we have our disagreements. But they are short lived and we get back on track quickly. Not bad actually considering we are in each others company 24/7. I wonder how many other couples have tried that!
love watching
Those small Sika-flex tubes with the winding key are a great improvement and less waste! Cheers from Canada!
darryl mcleman yes agreed. They are very good. And as you say, much less waste for small jobs.
she is so bristal, your a better man than me,lol. all of your repairs are better than most marinas work, its true. what an amazing work of art.
Thanks!
Glen and Oana, hope you're both well. It was lovely to catch up with these videos again... my favourite of all the sailing vlogs by far.
Great episode guys. Editing just gets better and better. Well done.
Thanks. Oana will appreciate this comment as she has started doing all the editing recently :)
When under power, you can nearly eliminate rolling by keeping the main up and sheeted hard overas one might sailing to windward. This can add a knot to your motoring speed and make for a much more comfortable voyage.
I love your globalized lamp. How special!
It was a while in the making!
@@SailCloudyBay That the parts of the lamp came from various places along your journey, is what makes it so special.

Oana is back working on editing as I write. She took a little "holiday" from it while sailing to Antigua.

Fishing Bay is a great anchorage too ,safe travels
It was indeed a lovely tranquil anchorage. Not so the passage back out the channel into 25 knots of Chesapeake fetch!
Love your videos, love the boat, you 2 make a great team!
Thanks Steve. Yes, we think the 3 of us do make a good team indeed.
I use to live 3 miles away from where you were docked at Water Side. I worked at he shipyard across the river.
Very beautiful 😍
Excellent vid ya'll.

Cloudy doesnt stop for nutin'!
Hope you made it to Bermuda and warmer weather.
Thomas, Yes had 10 warmish days in Bermuda. But we are now REALLY warm in Antigua where we arrived yesterday.
36:20 could be a great use for litmus strips - check pH before and after. Measure when new and track hours til bad.
Very good idea. I will certainly try that next time.
Started following you guys great videos very inspiring
Glad you are enjoying sailing along with us. Should be some more videos posted soon.

MacArthur Center Mall...I used to work there
bro, remember to use a safety line and life vests!
LOL funny crew..... Edited: look how shinny she is, that would be Cloudy..... Oana always sparkles....
Thanks Ray .... Yes she is the light of my life :) .... except when she isn't (Oana that is!)

Your sailboat will roll much less on mainsail alone, friend.
Sometimes trade a little speed for less rolling, perhaps.

A parasailor would be nice. Reduces the rolling tendency.
Very interesting because we have just purchased one! And one of the atributes that drew us to it is the reduction in rolling downwind. We couldnt afford a new one (crazy price) but we managed to find a nearly new one. Very interested to try it.
Is there any room in the new light for a red bulb for night watch?
Hmmm good point. I think I can actually get a bulb that will be either white or red. But we do already have red night lights.
