Such a super video - great to have the captions - thanks for that 👍 Difficult to imagine up to 60 men on this u boat Of course an element of sadness thinking of all men lost on both sides Nevertheless excellent viewing 👍
I'm dissapointed... I waited all through the video's length for a glimpse of the conning tower, the deck guns, the snorkel, etc...No luck. How could you guys skip the deck ?
@@jp-travels7740 Right, if only one visitor slipped on the iron rungs of that vertical ladders up the tower and then dang-dang-danged all the way down again!
I think there was no snorkel, at least not in the original state of the boat. U-995 was docked in Norway in 1945 to be equipped with one. The war was over before the job could be carried out. The boat was then used by the Norwegians until it was regarded as too unsafe for diving. Norway gave it to the Federal Republic, saying it should become a museum. Fun fact: nobody wanted it. For some ten years it deteriorated at a pier in the naval arsenal in Kiel until a solution was found: The Veteran Union bought it for a symbolic price to place it next to their main monument, the Naval Memorial in Laboe. That concrete and brick landmark was built in the 1920s/30s over the gun basement of an ex-coastal defence battery that had to be dismantled under the conditions of the Versailles Treaty. The underground circular Hall of Honour is where once a massive gun was pivoted to defend the entrance of Kiel Harbour. The tower, resembling the stem of a ship, was built next to it. The ship was restored, thinned plates were replaced and the interior was brought back to its 1945 appearence. It was then towed into a channel was had been dredged into the otherwise shallow waters near the beach so that a heavy load crane could hoist it out of the water and place it on two concrete cradles. Doors were cut into the starboard side to allow access into the hull. When you visit the memorial and climb the tower (or take the lift) you have a wonderful view over the Baltic, in clear weather the Danish Isles can be spotted. And the darker greenish-blue of the water still shows you the outline of that channel that was dug for the boat in the 1971.
Thank you for an excellent video.the translations added greatly to the experience. This is a nice tribute to the u-boat crews.

The Type 7 usually had a crew of 45 men.
Merci !
The likelihood to survive for a german U-Bootman was about 20%
It was very dangerous for sure...Many U boats were sunk... Thanks for watching and commenting 😊👍

Because there is no access to any of that part,of the boat at all due to safety reasons.

@@christiankastorf4836 - Thanks for the info.
The little men painted on the conning tower are copied over from the board game Fang den Hut, "Capture the Hat." 👩🔧🇺🇲🛠️🇷🇺
