I’m definitely a Gap Band fan. I think they had their own lane separate from Rick James. I just some of the electronic funk around that time sounded similar. Charlie Wilson is one of the iconic voices of funk/soul. Outstanding from Gap Band is one of my favorites

MP one of best always coming with those great request......Rick James vibes???.....i think Gap Band would be very upset if you made that comparison to them.....Gap Band had their own distinct sound......you knew a Gap Band song when you heard them.....this one of many hits this group had.....great reaction

Rick James had his lane, the Legendary Gap Band had their lane, and the Fantabulous Charlie Wilson owns his lane still even after all these decades. They all played funk back then but all very original artists in their own! The Gap Band was everything to our music back in the day. So no copy cats here!!! Those brothers are most definitely in the ranks as one of the greatest bands of all time!!!
    ❤️❤️❤️

Love my homestate group from Oklahoma. I dig these guys and their style of singing. No Rick James is not on this track, they play their own instruments, sing and dance. This band is named after famous street names from the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

Classic song, but I swear to this day that the synth bass line is exactly the same as the one from Bad Mamma Jamma by Carl Carlton. Anyone else noticed this?

This entire album was the "jam" back da days....no Rick...bands back may have low-key competed....but there was something distinctive about each of them. Fun fact: Albums use to come with the words inside the album cover or the record sleeve.

No Rick James vibes. Unless you are thinking about the way the person hit the drums in a certain way at the beginning of the song....then yes to that bcuz it is similar.

    Uncle Charlie!!!

  • @lb8471
    @lb8471 3 года назад +1

It's not "Charlene". He said, "Burn rubber on me, Charlie." He was talking like we did in the 70's and 80's. Like, "She was coming after me with her belt and I was outta there, Jack!" Just a jive way of talking.
Basically, it's about a woman who left him (burned rubber). She sent him to the store and when he got back, she was gone.
"Gave you my money, gave you my time,
Why you wanna hurt me, girl?
Are you serious? I'm just curious,
Why you wanna hurt me, girl?
I never, ever had a lover,
Who put the pedal to the medal
And burned rubber on me, Charlie
Just because you're not for real,
Why you wanna hurt me girl?
You took my money, you took my time,
You made me think everything was fine,
And then you upped and ran away,
And made me just go crazy.
You told me to go up the block
To get you a strawberry pop
When I got back to the flat
You had burned rubber out the back,
I went to the closet and saw no clothes,
All I saw was the hangers and poles,
    I went to the phone
    And called your mother,
She told me that you had
    Burned rubber on me, Charlie!"

Ok, y'all about to be triggered! GAP Band - OOPS UPSIDE YOUR HEAD (long version)😆 I used to wait by the radio for that song to come on. JJ will probably get the sample immediately.😀 Thanks JJ. This was really more of a groove for me. But not their best.

  • @cellmate1

The song is about a guy being a simp for a girl he spends his money and time on. But she doesn’t want him and leaves him.....”she burns rubber” leaving him , like the motorcycle sound you heard.

I read the comments before watching this- Definitely not getting a Rick James vibe from this song, even trying to hear one. Its possible that I know so much of the GAP bands work that I only hear their style- maybe. Classic song!

  • @MrRealbrotha

the song is referring to him being jilted after investing into a woman..they were more influenced by p-funk earlier before this which is their distinct sound. i never got the Rick James vibe when this was new

this is more akin to lakeside fantastic voyage than rick james but they all peaked around the same time. this was early 80s roller skating funk. I lost my shlt in junior high when this came out. the whole album kicks. humpin is the other big choon off it.

Charlie Wilson's solo stuff is great also. Try I'm Blessed, Chills, and There goes my Baby. In this song, there is no Charlene. He says, burn rubber on me, Charlie , and you thought he said Charlene. Maybe that's why you couldn't follow the storyline. Peace

They put down some great dance tunes. Their brand of Funk was veering away from that of Parliament/ Funkadelic/ Bootsy to a more mainstream feel. Make "Party Train" and "Outstanding " Your next listen by them.

Rick James influenced a lot of people during the late 70's and 80's Era. Gap band came after Rick, who was HUGE!!! during this time. Rick James definitely influenced Prince although they didn't like each other.
