Finally found a clear and well explained video on the choke linkage. My mid 80's 12hp B&S carb has been acting up (one of the very old versions with the manual choke lever, and no choke linkage). The replacement carb has the choke lever mounted on the rear side as you have shown. This video is/was exactly what I needed to find. (Even tho' I will probably end up rebuilding the original, at least I have a mower that runs again...) THANKS!

Hi, thanks for this video i was able to figure out the choke linkage. One issue i am having is engine won't start unless i remove air filter, i replaced this. When it runs and I engage the choke the engine will stall. Governor linkage is fine though the spring is broken. Would a clog breather cause stalling when choke is engaged? BS 12 hp IC on a 30 year old Craftsman 2 lawn tractor.
I have the exact same motor and I’ve been trying to figure out why it’s surging forever, the linkage on the carburetor back to the governor keeps going back-and-forth and back-and-forth surging, thought it was the carburetor and rebuilt it but it didn’t help, loosen the lock knock on the governor arm and turn the slot to the right and re-tightened, still didn’t help still surging, I can’t figure out why it keeps surging to save my life, I even replace that little tiny spring on the linkage and it didn’t help, it only does it when running at high speed, any ideas?
Hey, I checked out a few of your video's about these one piece carbs, love them, very helpful and got me through a lot. I do have one quick question. The oil breather hose that connects to the carburetor, while trying to get things set to run and my mower wouldn't run, it kind of looks like the might be/have been some oil getting in before the choke plate, is there something I should be looking at or what could the cause of that be?
+Charles Mccullick Appreciate that glad to help out! Usually oil from the breather hose is from excessive blow by (past the rings on the piston) forcing oil past the rings or to much oil in it, or, they have what works similar to a PCV valve on the valve spring cover, its possibly for that to be dirty or sticking letting oil seep through. Thats really about the only causes for it. Or if its been run on a hillside or turned over it will cause it to seep through as well. Thanks for Watching!!!
Can I ask a question I bought a new carb for my simplicity it's a 252707 and it has a spring on the jet screw on the top next to air mix screw is this normal
Why does the governor choke at high throttle? The engine on my riding mower chokes out when I try to set it to the high throttle setting for mowing. This doesn't make sense to me.
Hello, thanks for doing this video. Extremely helpful. Have a similar one which leaks gas through the hole next to where the air filter long screw goes into to the body. What purpose does that hole serve? Is it supposed to sealed off? Thanks!
Your welcome! There should be like a foam piece in it, or a screen, kind of hard to explain, but yeah its supposed to let built up gas seep out as far as i know. Thanks for Watching!!!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 - mine has like a very fine metal brass-like screen which gas seeps through and thought it must be a fault.. Have been looking for an explanation until now so I went ahead and sealed off. Any danger sealing it off you think? Have looked at some other videos tonight. Understand now how the throttle and choke works on the B&S as mine is also similar and I did have some questions. I commend and applaud you on the fine work you are doing. Makes beginners like me appreciate people like you and your goodness even more. Your explanations and videos are tops. Keep up the good work!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 hello, thanks again. have a similar carb but unable to get it to start. Cleaned the carb best I can. Smell gas after a couple pulls and then leaks through the hole at the bottom next to where the longer air filter screws goes in. The flywheel key is intact. Removed and checked. All new hose and filter and non- ethanol gas being used. Adjusted governor by following your instructions. Tried adjusting screws; one at top, then bottom all 1.5 turns. Unable to get it to attempt to start. Do you have any suggestions other than getting an after market carb?
I have a question I rebuilt a 19.5 hp briggs engine for my john deere lawn tractor. I've done this many times in the past but this time when it was all assembled and ready to start it didn't. All it does is back fire through the carburetor but won't start, just back fire. I have checked the values, they are good. I took the fly wheel off 3 times to double check the alignment but it was perfect.. Took the engine apart again to make sure the sprockets were all timed right and they were.. I have exhausted everything I know and gone over the entire engine over and over again and just don't understand what is wrong. I just ordered a carburetor solenoid for it thinking that was the problem but the more I think about it , I don't believe it is.. Any insight you may have on this?
Check for spark, I've that happen alot of times, if the flywheel key is good, valves are set, if you know the carburetor is clean, then its usually a intermittent spark on the coil, not always but if you have a inline spark plug checker put that on it and see whats it doing, if its just parking now and then you need a new coil. Thanks for Watching!!!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 I am was / am trying to get it back together to take to someone else to repair. I'd poured gas in the carb while it was attached and it backfired 3 diff times and caught carb and filter tray on fire.. I did get it to fire once or twice thru exhaust but wouldn't stay running. Any ideas ??, please?
I wanted to know explanations for MULTIPLE 3-5 magnets on outside of small engine Briggs flywheel . ( not underside 12 magnets) There is one that runs the Magneto coil. Does this have anything to do with AC type induction into ac magneto of North and south?
Yes it is some type of sequence of north south north or something like that to get the field to energize and collapse to generate a charge. and the magnets under the flywheel are just for the charging circuits. Thanks for Watching!!!
I recently bought a 12 HP I/C the linkage is extremely similar . But the finger that is supposed to catch the u shaped end of the choke linkage doesn't travel far enough to move the link. And suggestions?
My throttle plate adjustment has a lot of bounce. Yours was tight. My throttle has the spring and it is connected. If I manually move that assembly with the idle screw adjustment I get good full spectrum throttle. With the system it has one sweet spot ant either throttling up or down will cause it to stall out. Any suggestions? Great video.
If you mean play on the throttle shaft on the carburetor, it could be either the shaft it worn or the bushings in the carb body is worn. Thanks for Watching!!!
Your welcome! The small one on the linkage? All it does it keep tension on the linkages so there is less play in it, which in extreme cases can cause a small lope or surge, but as long as its running good and not surging or anything it will be fine to run without. Thanks for Watching!!!
hi there great video i have the same carby on a B&S 8hp engine i had to do a full clean on the carby all back together and start and runs fine problem im having is at full throttle its not revving high enough stalls out when blades are engaged I can get it to rev higher by screwing in the idle screw do u know what it would be cheers
Thanks! Sounds like your governor may need to be adjusted, if that doesn't help then i'd say the internal part may be damaged (oil slinger/governor). i have another video on adjusting governors. Thanks for Watching!!!
Hey Frank. I'm fairly new to your channel but finding it extremely helpful for an old ride-on project I'm doing. One question - I noticed on your red carburettor that there is another opening at the back end under the welch plug and beside the float bowl (similar to the crankcase vent on the side). My carb has this too but I can't figure what it's for. I have blanked it off with a screw and o-ring and the engine seems to run fine. I'm just curious what connects to it? Great videos, thank you so much.
The only opening I know of is for the screw that holds the air filter on, it goes through that. If that is what your talking about. Appreciate that, thanks for watching my videos!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 Thanks for the reply Frank. The opening I'm referring to is right next to the screw hole for the air filter. If you look at the video at 5:15 it is clearly shown. On my carb it was just an open hole but it looks like yours is filled?
@@Tubester10 oh ok, I see it now, let me look at one this weekend and I'll get back with you this week, I'm not really sure to be honest, it might be like a drain or a vent in case gas built up and it could drain but I'll find out!
Ok, so i just looked at one, it is a screen/filter, in case the float sticks or it floods it can drain out. Crazy that I've never noticed it until you pointed it out!
Jorge Lopez I might be able to, give me the model type and code off the motor, i'll look it up and find a part # for it. Only reason i need all of that is that some slide vertical and some horizontal, it might be a different number, i'm not sure right off hand. thanks for watching!
Cool video, very informative. I am going out to replace the carb diaphragm tomorrow because my mower started losing power after 3 min of running but, I noticed a loose spring when I took it apart. I reset it in the only little hole in the are but my Q is, when i pull the throttle bar, should not the linkage that the spring is attached to adjust? Oh, mine is a B&G 550 series
The only adjustment on most is on the governor itself, and you usually don't have to mess with that, the governor spring can be adjusted by the bending the tab its connected to put more/less tension on it. If that is what your talking about. thanks for watching!!!
I just purchased a nice Ariens YT1138 rider with a 11 hp Briggs. Engine runs fine at full throttle but not a 1/2 throttle or lower. Where should I troubleshoot first? thanks
Try adjusting the top mixture screw out, sounds like the idle mixture is lean. I have another video just on adjusting these carburetors. Thanks for Watching!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 Thanks I did just as you said. I adjust the idle mixture , closed the throttle and set the idle speed. Works fine. I've watched several of your videos already. One more questions. While air cleaner was off and the engine running as it should I noticed excess fuel in the area in front of the choke . Is that normal?
@@denniscady2268 Your welcome. Yes to a point that is normal, if its excessive and dripping out then it may be the float/needle valve not sealing good, and if it runs out when its not running then thats the issue as well. I have noticed with these carbs a little gas will sometimes pool up.
Not yet, but its funny you say that, i picked up a 11hp a few months ago (made a video on it, just haven't put it up yet), and the shaft bushings are show on it, so i will be replacing them and the shaft this summer sometime, i'm not in a hurry because its not on any equipment, but i will get to it! To get it running i put my red test carburetor on it. Thanks for Watching!!!
well done video. explains how linkage etc should have been hooked up. After years and a few owners mine was wrong but amazingly did still work for a short time. Now it is working nicely but the throttle slider had broken. The broken piece had wedged itself in behind which created a lot of problems with high speed and idle but the slider was still working. my slider looks just like that in your video and is on an 8hp. is there a place that still has some these in stock? thanks again well done.
Appreciate that! You can't buy (now) just the plastic piece, you have to buy the whole assembly, if you give me your model number off the engine i can look it up for you. Thanks for Watching!!!
t just shows as 8hp IC industrial motor it is in a 1984-1986 Ford R8 lawn tractor it is an 8hp electric start. looks like mtd manual shows as BS1917072140 8hp electric start 09g12052.-2005 but of course shows as superceeded. also with checking the governor setting etc the motor is not getting full throttle. I can push throttle lever to fast but can still turn around and thumb the butterfly further open and getting more rpm. how do I set the motor for more rpm or full throttle? the sliding throttle works for the choke at the top of the stroke so do I need to bend a butterfly linkage? thanks.
There is a little hose behind my carburetor that is all of sudden blowing large amounts of oil out of it. What is causing that? Does the hose need to be plugged? If anyone can help. model 286707 Briggs and Stratton made for Craftman.
Its a oil breather hose, or crankcase vent hose (basically the same thing as a PCV valve on a car engine). It connects on the back of the carburetor right beside where the mounting bracket connects to the carb. Thanks for Watching!!!
Mine has a lot of oil spewing out of it, what would cause that? It did not do that at first. After letting the engine run for about 2mins it started spewing out oil.
It could be a bad "pcv" valve, they don't call it that but it serves the purpose of one, or it could be from excessive blow by, if the engine smokes alot that is probably what it is, or it could be as simple as to much oil in it causing it.
I have a question mine kind of leaks gas out towards the back kind of behind the air filter screw but ain't the air filter screw it's like a right in the back like a little hole and was like a filter in it I don't know what it is
I'm not sure exactly what your talking about, most of the time on these gas leaks is either from the float sticking or the bowl gasket leaking, hope this helps! Thanks for Watching!!!
Not sure if I'll ever hear back from ya but I'm working on getting this old motor runnin again and I'm having troubles with the linkages... if I could maybe bug ya for a little and get some help I'd I'd surely appreciate it

Thanks for sharing . I give you a 5 star rating .

Thx sir helped a lot
Helpful thanks
Buddy I bought the cheap ebay carb but can get fuel inlet in. Any ideas?
I'd say take the bowl off and make sure the float or needle valve isn't stuck. Thanks For Watching!
I did the same . I had to tap the fuel inlet threads in the carburetor.
Understand now how the throttle and choke works
on the B&S as mine is also similar and I did have some questions.
Perfect...thank you so much !!
Your welcome, Thanks for Watching!!!
@@charlesbroomfield9832 the flywheel key may be sheared throwing the timing out, alot of times they will act like that if its sheared.
@@fnaguitarplayer9 Thank you sir. After writing you, I found a video describing it but I don't have tools to do the job. Thanks again!!

Thanks for Watching!!!
the little black square where the throttle cable hooks into is stuck on mine, it doesnt want to go all the way down how do i fix this? please help
Somebody should do a video on changing transmission fluid or oil on a 1975 Craftsman lawn tractor.
I recently bought a 12 HP I/C the linkage is extremely similar . But the finger that is supposed to catch the u shaped end of the choke linkage doesn't travel far enough to move the link. And suggestions?
Usually the problem i've ran into on those is the throttle cable needs to be adjusted so it pulls it more. thanks for watching!!!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 it does seemed stretched !!
Thanks a lot!
Your welcome, Thanks for Watching!!!
Thank you sooo much, u have a 11hp and couldnt figure out the choke
Your welcome, Thanks for Watching!!!
Thanks alot man
Very helpful video thank you
I have exactly the same set up and that spring you said was broken is missing, how important is it?
Cheers Bob
Your welcome! The small one on the linkage? All it does it keep tension on the linkages so there is less play in it, which in extreme cases can cause a small lope or surge, but as long as its running good and not surging or anything it will be fine to run without. Thanks for Watching!!!
Do you have a video on the manual choke conversion?
Yes, watch this one: ruclips.net/video/1WWpeyDbHjA/видео.html Thanks for Watching!!!
hi there great video i have the same carby on a B&S 8hp engine i had to do a full clean on the carby all back together and start and runs fine problem im having is at full throttle its not revving high enough stalls out when blades are engaged I can get it to rev higher by screwing in the idle screw do u know what it would be cheers
@@fnaguitarplayer9 Ah right. That makes sense. Mine must have the screen missing! Cheers from England!
Hello Friend just wondering you could help me find a "throttle slide" the plastic piece on the throttle linkage on a flat head? TIA.
@@fnaguitarplayer9 Thanks again. I enjoyed watching your videos and i have saved them for future use. Enjoy your day.
@@denniscady2268 Your welcome
Ever had any experience replacing the the throttle shaft bushings on the one piece flo-jets?
Not yet, but its funny you say that, i picked up a 11hp a few months ago (made a video on it, just haven't put it up yet), and the shaft bushings are show on it, so i will be replacing them and the shaft this summer sometime, i'm not in a hurry because its not on any equipment, but i will get to it! To get it running i put my red test carburetor on it. Thanks for Watching!!!
+fnaguitarplayer9 yes, same here, have a 11HP with slopped out bushings. Can't get to idle worth a darn.
I hear ya, it really does make a difference, you wouldn't think so but it does
well done video. explains how linkage etc should have been hooked up.
Thanks for Watching!!!
t just shows as 8hp IC industrial motor
it is in a 1984-1986 Ford R8 lawn tractor it is an 8hp electric start. looks like mtd manual shows as BS1917072140 8hp electric start 09g12052.-2005 but of course shows as superceeded.
also with checking the governor setting etc the motor is not getting full throttle.
I think i saw you called it a oil hose but i don't see where you hook it up at does it hook to the back of the carburetor?
Yes it did it was just the float Bowl
I hear ya, i thought it would be that.
good vid ..thank..

Not sure if I'll ever hear back from ya but I'm working on getting this old motor runnin again and I'm having troubles with the linkages... if I could maybe bug ya for a little and get some help I'd I'd surely appreciate it
I always answer comments on all my videos, just may not be really prompt! If you put all the linkages in like this video and it still doesn't run right, or it surges/lopes, try adjusting the governor it will usually fix that. Thanks for Watching!!!
It will help a bit if you would add more light

This video is exactly what I'm looking for. Any chance do you have a spare intake filtering system? I have the carb, but the filter is missing and I have tried to get another system from B&S and it fails. Here is the engine numbers Model 253707 Type 0206-01 code 86031911.
