Well, I got the same generator today off Facebook marketplace, got it for $150 bc the carb got gummed up. This will serve as a backup to my Westinghouse dual fuel, which is like a rolls Royce compared to the powerback 5250. That being said, I will be following this video, and your other one on the propane conversion, to the T. Thank you sir, your entire channel is a huge wealth of knowledge for professional homeowners.
Thanks for posting this . I have purchased the parts and i'm about to install the starter but I have some questions. I'm no electrician so I need help with the wiring . I've watched this video MANY times and I still don't completely understand how to run the wires. As helpful as your video is it's not clear EXACTLY where to make the connections. A diagram would have been great to show a novice where the wiring should be connected. Any help with where I could find something like that? Thanks!
Hi, the connection is simple as the lamp can be switched on/off. You connect the motor start to the switch. The issue is the switch button capability. The low current switch can be damaged in case that high Amp is needed to be switched off/on. You connect a solenoid to prevent that bad action as he did. Between the motor starter and battery, you connect solenoid and switch by interromping the positive wire.
I have the same generator that I want to do this to. I bought it after Hurricane Rita, and just put a bunch of new parts on it. My 55 year old arm doesn't like pull-starting it. I work about 100 miles from home for days at a time and the kids are long gone, so I have to make it easy for the wife to start. I have the starter but my my flywheel is un-toothed. I need to find one and also one of those switches.
There is a recall on those models dealing with the fuel tank. The plastic cracks around the mounting bolts. Fine time to find out about a cracked and leaking tank when you need the damn thing. They did ship a new one to me totally free
Same Here. Here is the number to call for the recall. 1 800-888-2468 - They will ship a new tank and grommet. Please destroy the old tank so no-one else tries to use it. I just did the recall a few months ago (Fall 2018)
Hi TGun, how did you find the right Elec Starter kit fror you generator? I have a Brgg/Stratton EmgPwr generator & I'm having a hard time finding one for mind. Either way thanks.. bro.
I have a honda generator (5.5 - 8kw max) and was wondering if they all have teeth on the fly wheel. Also, will all generator/golf cart starters work (meaning are all the teeth the same)?
I need to do both, i hate to sell it and buy one that has propane and electric start. Only used once for 2 hours and i will be angry if i need it and it and cant get it started
What brand or engine design does a Champion 4350/3500 open frame inverter generator use? Ive searched and searched and all i can find is advertisements. Is it based on briggs and straton, or honda, or techumsa, or what?
You can literally put a jumper cable on starter bolt positive and put the neg on neg and ground to generator and just touch jumper cable positive to positive when u want to start. Or a push button switch
Short Version: Electric starter is the way to go! I have two bad shoulders from motorcycle accidents. I will see if I can convert my 8hp wood chipper! I can honestly say that I DON'T missed my Generac 5000 watt 10hp generator with a pull starter! A couple times I forgot to turn the fuel on..Duh! I was looking for a used dual fuel generator for about three months on different web sites. But I found a Sportsman 7000 watt propane only at great price! You have none of the gasoline maintenance to deal with! I found three tanks by abandoned homeless camps! I can go about seven to eight hours on a tank. I will be working on a to lower the noise level down for me and my neighbors P S. Not necessarily needed, but the transfer panel is nice to have! I had to upgrade to a 200 amp for a kitchen remodeling project. I can run 75% of the house now. I did buy a cheap microwave oven to cook meals and heat water. I plan to have a electrician make some changes to reach 85%-90%. Only two of the four bedroom has power. The water heater is not on the transfer box. The washer, dryer, oven range and stove top microwave is not needed. I only run the lights that are needed. And I can a long extension cord over the fence for my NICE neighbor. My BAD neighbor can kiss my grits!
Ok how are you going to keep the battery charged? Generators with electric start also are able to maintain battery charge too. Can this be done on those that are manual start?
I know 3 years late,I just saw video. don't need solenoid with that push button, it's good to 30-50a depending on who you buy it from. solenoids are cheap, $10-15 so just use one & any momentary push button you want, switch will see less then 1a triggering solenoid
That starter is really quite poorly engineered... So many more durable designs could have been used. Small ring gears have a tendency to get their teeth broken. Much more so than large ones. For what it is, something as simple as a one way clutch built in to the starter (like one would find on a motorcycle) and a hard rubber wheel instead of the starter gear on the output shaft of the starter could have replaced the ring gear, the starter gear, the starter solenoid, and the frustration of needing to either replace the flywheel at some point in the future or resign yourself to pull starting that 10hp beast. Edit: it really doesn't matter if your generator engine was designed to be started with an electric starter or not. You can make it happen if you try hard enough. Don't plan on purchasing 100% off the shelf components to make it happen though. Some custom fabrication will be required.
I have the same generator and the same engine, and like one of the other commenters, I don't have the flywheel with teeth (or ring gear pressed on) to accept the pinion gear on the starter. Could you share the part number of your flywheel with teeth?
Is it possible to put a electric starter on something that has a pull starter? I have a gx390 and my pull starter broke and if that's possible I might as well spend the money on a electric starter. Thanks
I got caught by the "American" description. Fitting a retail option to machine and calling it a "conversion" is misleading. You folks buy a kit and tell us you built it. No - you just installed it. Drives me nuts.
The machine was not electric start and he converted it into a machine with electric start. He never said he built it, I don't understand your frustration with his title as I understood exactly what he was saying and for me his video fit the title perfectly.
+Mother Nature - LOL, you didn't get his post did you? He is saying.... Your time cost $1.00 and the Project cost $1.00............... SAME THING !!! LMFAO !!!
+Abe Coulter - It's NOT " Solinoid ".......... Its a " Solenoid "! BTW..... Common terms used " Solenoid " when in " Motors ", etc... If in Electronic World.... It's a " Relay ", but " Solenoid " are used in Mowers, Lawn Tractors, etc.... Or you can call it " HIGH VOLTAGE SWITCH ", LOL.
must be a blessing in the winters, instead of freezing while trying to cold pull start a generator.

Fantastic video. Thank you very much. There’s a real lucky kid playing in the background audio. 😊
You're an absolute champion, Thank you
Any Conversion is a lot of works.... And Mechanical Capable 👍👍

Thanks for your video. Now if only I could put a push button on my walk behind Craftsman weed wacker.

Friend, what are the exact specifications of the starter motor?
Are you going to mount an on board battery and, if so, where are you going to mount it?
where is the second video that show where you put a battery on the generator? Please and good job
🤔😬. Hope he's ok 2 years later ☺️. Dealing with propane and gas ..Yikes 😳. Hope it worked out

What’s the part number of the starter?
Sir, is available that kind of power generator which is start after some hours rest by self and auto stop after some hour running please reply
Can I have the link to the starter
I have a 2 stroke 950W Pulstart generator. Can it be convert to a electric starter?
How much did those parts cost? Rough estimate.
I need to do both, i hate to sell it and buy one that has propane and electric start. Only used once for 2 hours and i will be angry if i need it and it and cant get it started
👍👍👍👍👍👍 Excellent job. 🙂
Do they make starter kits for the generac gp5500? Would like to convert it for my 75 year old dad

It’s a Chonda
Honda Chinese clone
Do you have a link to the switch that you said could be used without a solenoid?
Mine has a push button
What kind of solenoid did you use?

No charger for the battery. Need to install a alternator behind the flywheel to charge the battery.
Is that starter also charge the battery?
starters don't charge batteries. the current usually comes from the stater on the fly wheel.

Anyone know the wiring diagram for the 3 wires for kill switch? 2 black one green for killswitch.
Mine is exactly the same motor. Green is on bottom. Thin black in middle and thicker black with shielded connector goes on top.
@@bugaihomine slung a rod and oil shit off didn’t shut it off.
I may scrap it.
What if it has the access plate, but not the holes on the side of the block?
Got to have holes
He said that.
I purchased this flywheel w/ring gear
TECUMSEH HSK840-8311B FLYWHEEL 611192
i need a flywheel with a starter ring where can i buy one
Easy
Tips: High Current Switches are expensive :((((. $2.00 Switch + $8.00-$10.00 Solenoid is the way to go ALWAYS!
Relays are an acceptable substitute for a solenoid..
Sometimes, they're the same thing.
Does anyone know for sure if the TVM 195 and TVM220 vertical shaft Tecumseh engine flywheel and charging coils will fit the HM100 engine?
Ok how are you going to keep the battery charged? Generators with electric start also are able to maintain battery charge too. Can this be done on those that are manual start?
Use your head you start the generator then you will have power put it on charge lol
@@andrewbrown8872or use battery in your car or mower
Any chance you can tell me the part number of the flywheel i have same engine but no ring gear on flywheel

Remove the pull start Assy. and use an electric drill to start it! LOL.

Niiiiiiiicccceeeeeeeee
Your statement is wrong I have added starter kits to lots of generators that don't have holes in the block they do make kits for that
How you going to mount starter?
by the time you have done all this you could have bought a harbor freight generator the is electric start and been done with it.
JIMMY TATE true but you get the fun with building projects and you can save money.
