What a great, multi-disciplinar, and immensely talented artist. From this interview and his performances, one can tell he was a very kind and genuinely nice man, too, RIP Mr Joey DeFrancesco, and thank for sharing.

Joey was a genius !miles said he had to teach Joey to use punctuation marks in his solos. He loved Joey’s ability to improvise. Miles was always amazed with the unique genius of Jimmy Smith- Joey reminded Miles of the overarching talent of Joey.

That’s an amazing story about Miles influence on Joey to play trumpet! Listen to O.E.I. & How little We Know! My heart is 💔. We lost a great and shame on us for not giving him his flowers sooner! Breaks my heart whenever I hear Europeans have more of an appreciation for Jazz than us Americans. Joey was influenced by Jimmy Smith and when Jimmy passed, I thought I’d be fine as long as Joey was around! Im hurt! RIP you Jazz God! 🕊

Joey D, missing you big time already. I can see you were in some degree of pain and ill health in this video. I hope you didn't suffer too much in your final years.

He was such a talent. But to be honest, Joey is really struggling to even breathe here, listen to it. He could be alive today if he'd drop the weight much earlier. By the time he lost some weight, the damage to his heart was already done. We keep losing these people due to stupid shit like that.

I'm not sure about that, but Wikipedia says he died of a heart attack and that's no surprise to me considering Joey's size. I sooooo wish he also didn't smoke, but it is what it is. It makes me well-up thinking about us losing such an amazing talent. Off the charts amazing (I saw him play with John McLaughlin and Dennis Chambers back in the late 1990's, England).
