Our house in Ocean Springs MS on back bay went under 12 feet. 2nd story did not get any water. Bathtub ring left. behind and smelled horrible. Structure stood amazingly. Strangers that lost entire home living in our garage and I offered 2 dry mattresses and 2 box springs from upstairs that came in handy. Luckily I had a lighter in my pocket and dry paper upstairs and used wood from an antique old oak table upstairs. The table was once treasured as an heirloom. It was truly treasured on that day. Used our grills, dried out limbs for later use. Started the fire on the left behind old trusty grill to cook food left in our freezer that was STILL frozen as there was nothing left to eat and not a nonprofit offering food in sight !! No phone usage available. Wires and trees down everywhere. Houses around me flattened. Anyone that followed the smell of the grill walking by looking for shelter and food were welcomed. Liquor bottles came in handy....no clean water and sewage everywhere. Patio furniture that floated in was used. I mean what do u say? Its a solemn moment where no one says anything - just surviving and helping each other. It was much better in the garage than inside because of heat, smell, moldy, wet, no air circulation inside. Its so strange the quietness, not even sound of birds, we all just sat with no discussion. No immediate help available because too many people to help. Words could not describe the emotions during this time. Everyone knew what to do without being asked. It was like we were reading each others minds. The emotions were so heavy that we, strangers, all connected with no words. It didn't matter about status - what mattered was we all had the commonality of loss, survival, and brother\sisterhood. Humanity. Mississippi was hit by Katrina yet we got less coverage as if MS didn't matter. Yes LA was damaged but majority was caused by man not by Katrina. Katrina destroyed the COAST OF MISSISSIPPI!

I used to live on Rt 90 in Mississippi City right on the Gulf between Gulfport and Biloxi. I moved in 1976. The place I lived in on the coast isn't even there any more. I loved living there though.

My husband was stationed at Keesler in Biloxi during Katrina and we had 2 small children, a 9 month old and my 2 year who had just had open heart surgery. Our home flooded and everything was destroyed but we had evacuated and were staying in a shelter. We were not prepared. We didn’t have enough formula and diapers and food. The military police went to the commissary and brought back supplies for everyone. We were stuck in the shelter for two weeks before we could even drive out and even two weeks later it was mind blowing to see. It looked like a bomb had gone off and just annihilated everything. Beautiful homes along the beachfront were just gone… nothing but concrete slabs left. The casinos on the barges were gone…. Turned upside down miles down the highway. It was insane. It was my favorite place ever prior to Katrina. It was the only duty station I ever liked. I’ve been through many hurricanes growing up on the east coast of North Carolina but never anything like Katrina. We went through Hurricane Florence a few years back and our home here in NC was destroyed. When he retires I’m moving to Montana…..I’m sick of living near oceans.

That is too bad. I bet your kids have to wait a long to be reunited with their old toys in heaven and long time to be reunited with stuff you lost in the hurricane in heaven.

I was 8 1/2 months pregnant with our son. We had finished putting his crib and everything together that Friday before the storm. We lived five houses down from the beach in Gulfport Ms. My doctor told me to evacuate or go to the hospital because I was a high risk patient. I would have evacuated regardless because I believe in running from a hurricane! We came home to nothing, but we still had our lives. My neighbor next door lost her life because she would not leave her two dogs and evacuate. I had to leave two cats and it was hard but my son's life was more important than a animal's.

Boogity Boogity There's no need for name calling, let's be grown ups here. We evacuated to northern Alabama, the hotel didn't allow pets. This was my first and only child who is now 12 years old. I wouldn't change a thing. Have a nice day!

I'm more amazed in the fact that someone who was barely born around the time of Katrina is already now a teenager! I just wonder where the heck does the time go!!! Katrina honestly didn't seem that that long ago. I was 15 turning 16 like 2 weeks after Katrina happened myself.

😮 Cajun greetings from coastal Mississippi and Twelve Oaks plantation. I survived Camille and Katrina. Sidewalks leading to nowhere.... still haunts me to this day
