Fun fact (probably not fun): I was just wondering last week about Connery and his acting career, and just found out yesterday he's been dead for two years.
Fun fact: the scene where Bond puts a helmet on before using the jetpack was done very last-minute (it's why it's not shot on location) because the guy who actually flew the jetpack refused to do it without a helmet, so they had to grab Sean Connery and get a shot of him putting a helmet on to match continuity-wise.
These have been glorious so far, and I'm holding my breath to this day for you to get to my favorite in the series. James Bond will indeed return in You Only Live Twice!
Thunderball was the first Connery Bond film I’ve seen on TV during a TBS marathon of Bond films when Tomorrow Never Dies was being released. I agree that Thunderball is great with the humor, the action, the villains, and the theme song.
I grew in The 60s and SCUBA was brand new tech. Space-age stuff. Hell, even underwater filming was new. It was pretty much only seen in Jacque Coustuo tv specials. In The 60s comics, they had whole comic titles named after SCUBA divers. They were known as frogmen.
Read the book, it was a fantastic thriller that moved at a great pace. But I was always curious what Thunderball meant. Looking into it, Thunderball was a slang term from Atomic Testing in the 1950s Fleming overheard. But the far more interesting story about Thunderball is the Kevin McClory Saga and the tangled legal battle for decades over the rights to Thunderball and McClory's never ending attempts to make his own Bond leading to Never Say Never Again
Ian Fleming was working for British Intelligence in World War 2 and used some spy terminology. I think there was a massive listening operation against the Nazis called Operation Goldeneye.
The scene where Bond arrives for his mission briefing with the other 00 agents was originally going to have cameos from the stars of other spy shows and films - Patrick Macnee as John Steed, Roger Moore as Simon Templar, Michael Caine as Harry Palmer, Robert Vaughn and David McCallum as Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, James Coburn as Derek Flint, Robert Culp and Bill Cosby as Kelly Robinson and Alexander "Scotty" Scott etc. Due to budgetary and logistics concerns, this was scrapped.
I do actually love that the stereotypical Bond girl becomes one of the main villains, using her appeal as a weapon. Didn't expect that twist from a Connery Bond.
I think Brad covering most of the Brosnan era will provide many jokes given how quickly Brosnan’s turn spiraled downward. Plus the hit & miss of Daniel Craig or the weirdness of “Moonraker” and “A View to a Kill” for Roger Moore. So much to cover

Actually like Operation Double 007. The plot twists aren't that silly and you can see that they put care and money into the production. No toy boats and watches falling out of nowhere like other Bond imitations that MST3K did.
I hope Brad does a review of YOLT soon instead of waiting for some Bond milestone/occasion, it's my favorite Sean Connery Bond flick due to its exotic nature, despite him slightly phoning in his performance, I still enjoyed it greatly.
This is one of those movies I was meh about as a kid, but has grown on me as I've gotten older. Also, why do exercise machines always come with kill settings?
Seeing the ABC Thunderball commercial reminds me of how into the 1980's it was a big deal when a movie was airing on TV, and the James Bond films were big ones. Video Rental was getting easier, but we we still dependent on the TV schedule. Much of my early James Bond came from these network TV airings. Due to them being recent, often new, the Roger Moore bonds were seen most often. For that reason I saw the least of the Connery Bond and it felt like a treat to view them. I didn't end up seeing all of them as a kid, and Thunderball was one I never saw. Apparently I was busy during this airing on May 8, 1986. Expo 86 had just opened and I know we went there early. I certainly saw Never Say Never Again again and again due to Cable. Kids don't know better. As video became cheap and cable became plentiful the rarity of everything went down. TBS had 15 days of 007 so that everything was shown more often. Now, nobody cares when a movie is showing on TV. As much as I never, ever want to watch a movie with commercials in it, I still have nostalgia for the feeling. We always remember the good parts.
Back in our day, you’d have yer favorite movie play once a year. If you missed it, tough titty. People just don’t appreciate what they’ve got, nor what they missed. Now if you don’t mind, I’m gonna go sit in my rockin chair on the porch, smokin my corn cob pipe…
Nowadays, it feels like a bug freaking deal if a network (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX) plays a movie during prime time; when basic and premium cable channels do that all the time.
Ahh TBS I won the internet quiz contest they ran when they showed For Your Eyes Only. Many, many years ago. The prize was a piece of crap but it was fun.
Surprised you didn't mention that Johnny Cash recorded a prospective theme song for this film, also called "Thunderball." It's actually not bad, but I can see why they'd think it was out of place for a Bond film.
I heard that. Sounds more like a western 007 if it starred Clint Eastwood as Bond and John Wayne as Largo. Besides that, it is good, even included it in a teaser for my newest show.
Thunderball, not to be confused with Thunderballs, a porn parody. I knew that movie was weird when, in the opening sequence, instead of Bond shooting his gun at the camera, he whipped out his 007.
The underwater scenes were directed by Ricou Browning, most famous for doing he swimming scenes from Creature From the Black Lagoon. Interestingly, he's the last surviving Universal Monster.
Not to be that guy but it’s not THAT interesting that he’s the last surviving Monster. Black Lagoon was the last of those classic movies and he was a lot younger when he played Gill-Man than Karloff, Lugosi, etc. were when they played the Monsters.
