- Chinese is a group of related language varieties that form the Sinitic branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. The largest varieties are Mandarin, Wu, Cantonese, Min, Xiang, Gan, and Hakka. These varieties are not mutually intelligible, although they share a common written language.
Some key facts about the Chinese language:
Chinese is one of the oldest continuously used writing systems in the world, with a history tracing back thousands of years. The Chinese writing system uses logograms (characters) instead of an alphabetic script.
Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken variety, with over 1 billion native speakers, and is the official language of mainland China and Taiwan. Other major varieties have hundreds of millions of speakers as well.
Chinese is a tonal language, with four or five main tones that change the meaning of words. This makes it challenging for non-native speakers to master.
Chinese grammar is relatively simple compared to many other languages, with no verb conjugations, noun cases, or gender. However, the complex writing system and tones make it a difficult language for foreigners to learn.
There are many dialects and subdialects of Chinese that can vary greatly in terms of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, even within the same broad language variety.
Standard Mandarin, based on the Beijing dialect, is the official language used in education, media, and government across China. But many Chinese people also speak their local dialect in informal settings.
