Do you prefer Debian Stable as a daily driver, or do you use testing? I'm also curious about some of your app choices - do you use Firefox ESR, or do you manually install rapid release? Do you have a preferred media player? I assume you add the nonfree repos, right?
Personally, I use Debian Stable with non-free. The reason: I was using Debian Testing with my i3 gaps and it broke my bumblebee status bar during an update. Since then, I just keep Debian Stable as my distro of choice. Frankly, I don't have to use the most current software. Not important to me. I use Firefox ESR. I use VLC for media but don't really play a lot of media using a local machine. I installed a dedicated Plex server which is a massive discussion all by itself.
@@JustAGuyLinux I use Kodi myself, but on my laptop I've become accustomed to MPV (VLC was previously my favorite). I'd been using PopOS until recently, when I decided to try out Fedora for a week. It's not bad at all, but I'm still more accustomed to using apt from previous years of using ubuntu/raspbian on and off.
Since you mentioned the Raspberry Pi, your video made me want to try this. I'm using the Rpi 4b 4GB model and installed Openbox on 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Lite. It's super fast! Only uses about 150 MB of RAM when idle, and with the terminal and Firefox running only about 500 MB. Can you try rat poison next? It might be even lighter than Openbox.
@@JustAGuyLinux I installed it earlier and have been using it all day. Super snappy and responsive. I'll be honest, it's going to be really hard going back to a full DE after this, especially something resource intensive like KDE Plasma. Installed with the CLI, only had to run apt install openbox xorg menu lightdm, then copy the config files to user. Took less than five minutes. I'll definitely try your script out though and let you know how it works on the RPi.
@@JustAGuyLinux Your script works perfectly on the Raspberry Pi. I commented out the microcode for Intel/AMD because the Rpi is ARM, so I didn't think I'd need it. The only thing is that it kept booting into the CLI, which was an easy fix with sudo systemctl set-default graphical-target. There's probably a few other tweaks I could make just for the Rpi, but overall no problems at all! Would you mind if I modify your script for a smoother Rpi installation and put it on my GitHub?
Just used your walkthrough for debian install and this. On the system install I guess I left GB instead of editing to MB for the boot/efi so.... I installed twice instead of trying to edit it down after the fact hahaha. I edited your openbox script to use sddm instead of lxdm, Seeeeems to have worked unless my problem is related to that. Problem is windows and anything drawn on the screen doesn't go away. So I got that windows solitaire win theme going LMAO. Anyway, I'm going to install nvidia driver to see if that fixes it but regardless, I need a nap haha Thanks for the walkthough and script. Was a big help.
@@JustAGuyLinux alright, i fixed it. i think. picom wasn't starting. i started it in terminal and the desktop started behaving properly, however it threw some fencing error. i'm ignoring that for now. so i manually added picom to the openbox startup config thing. it's working. ffs i just got to the part of this video where you did literally that hahahahaaa wow i'm stupid. It was such a weird issue i thought it was an nvidia issue though so i wanted to sort it out before proceeding. anyway, thanks again!
@@human__________ I have two machines with nvidia but the test computer that I use for videos is intel 'cross the board. Makes things easier. Try this command in the autostart and see if it fixes: picom --experimental-backends --backend glx --xrender-sync-fence

I've been trying to to get a minimum install on an old HP laptop and wanting to install OpenBox. Have been following other youtubers and will get to a point where stuff doesn't work. I want the minimum as possible. I tried your script and it seems to be working. It's still installing, but I'm afraid it might be still too bloated for my laptop. As long as it's light on resources it might be okay. Initially just want it to be able to browse the web, watch videos. That's it. How did you learn this or it's just one of those cases where I just have to be steeped and learn over time" I'm only in to minimum installs right now for web browsing and web videos with a light window manager such as OpenBox.
Not sure how to get it lighter. I have one subscriber that is using a Raspberry Pi and it is working pretty well. I would make sure you run the lightest browser you can find.

Since I'm just trying installs, I went ahead bit the bullet and installed KDE Plasma. I know it's heavy and was trying to avoid it, but being on Wayland I wanted to see what would happen. Was pleasantly surprised. Now I'll try Gnome. After, I'll look into some optimizations.
Definitely going to include a couple more videos regarding Openbox. I did the one video for i3, but will get to a more complete explanation at some point.
Font rendering was terrible and it needs a dark theme🙂Coming up, in the next video I presume? Personally I don't like wm's. Key bindings I don't like at all.
