"You move me You move me With your buildings and your eyes Autumn woods and winter skies You move me You move me Open sea and city lights Busy streets and dizzy heights You call me You call me"
A great coming of age song with incredible lyrics, the line of "When I leave I don't know what I'm hoping to find & When I leave I don't know what I'm leaving behind" is such a perfect quote for an adolescent moving out on their own for the first time... The Analog Kid about to transition to become a Digital Man. Watching this live is crazy too with Geddy playing a baseline, singing and using his feet for synths. Just nuts.
@obxwave 42 years ago when Signals-album and this song came out I was 19 yrs - "the world was my oyster"... and the longing to depart was so burning. Somehow the time has slipped by, but the song is still even closer to my heart (pun intended). Amazing band. Neil Elwood Peart, gone for three years now. RIP, and Thank You.
The bass is so present and powerful in Rush, geddy is really one of the best bass player ever. RIP Rush, and thanks for all the good songs, memory and shows! 🤘
" "When I leave I dont know what I'm hoping to find, and when I leave I dont know what I'm leaving behind." Was quoted in my high school year book, 1986. Very fitting. Good video.
Listen to Middletown Dreams off Power Windows the layers of music and time changes plays out like your watching a movie to the soundtrack of their music !
"A boy lies in the grass unmoving, staring at the sky. His mother starts to call him as a hawk goes soaring by. The boy pulls down his baseball cap and covers up his eyes." Incredible lyrics!
Subdivisions, New World Man, Analog Kid. You have to watch this song live in Cleveland. You really appreciate Geddy playing bass, synthesizer and foot pedals all on this song. Great album!!🎶👍
Can you believe so many Rush fans back in the day thought that this record was the start of Rush's decline? LMAO! This record blows away ANYTHING they did in the 70's although I love that era as well. Rush's best 5 records came all in a row. Permanent Waves through Power Windows.
I Chose Analog Kid live to celebrate Geddy Lee's 70th Birthday on July 29th. Thank you for choosing this great Rush Song. My favorite Rush album is from the 80's Power Windows from 1985. I love every song on the album. Nick & Lex the songs on the album Middletown Dreams, Marathon, The Big Money, Manhattan Project, Mystic Rhythms, Emotion Detector, Territories, My favorite song on the album Grand Design. I hope one day you will react to all these amazing songs.
I was a junior in high school when this album was released, the New World Tour was my first show, April 1983. For a lot of kids, Subdivisions was the song that resonated with them personally, it got the radio play, it was played in concert until forever. But to me....THIS is the song that resonated with me so personally. The young boy dreaming about his future, about the girl he's got a crush on, so important to him, so absorbing, and then his mother calls him and breaks that moment....so incredibly poignant to me. It was so, so relatable. And just musically fantastic. I like Rush's entire catalog, but if I were to shortlist it to say a dozen songs that I felt were essential, The Analog Kid would be one of them.
Thanks so much NicknLex for getting back to 80's Rush. You both are going to love and appreciate so much of this creative era from the best band ever. Maybe you could do like 2 songs a month. Thanks again for being part of the Rush Family !!! 🎸🥰
I saw Rush in Frankfort Germany during their signals tour featuring the song you reacted to on this channel. Bought the album afterwords helped solidify my love for the band.
Hands down best band ever. I so agree. The blueprint for a band. Great friends, great music, they respected each other so much. Went out on top without 10 farewell tours!
Her disbelief @ 4:14 when the time changes and the big rich sound of the synthesizers kicks in is my absolute fav. She's adorable and you're a hell of a lucky guy. Long live Rush.
Signals was, to my mind, one of the best - I saw them twice on the European leg of the tour, once at Wembley, London, the other, the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham (as it was known then) in 1983, & by pure happenstance, happen to be wearing one of those forty year old tour shirts as I type; the dates on the back are almost faded out, but the Dalmation by the fire hydrant on the front is still as clear as day - go figure. Every young man at the time could identify with this kid's feelings - I certainly did. Awesome choice, Nick n' Lex - More from Signals, please.
More about the lyrics from a classic interview with Neil: Interviewer: I was re-reading the lyric sheet from Signals today. Much of what you wrote about made me think of you as the Mark Twain of rock lyrics - writing about Huckleberry Finn - or Tom Sawyer-type characters. Neil Peart: Well, that's certainly something that I relate to strongly. I basically come from a standard background like that. I grew up in the suburbs, but at the same time, most of my relatives had farms. So every summer or holiday I'd be out at the farm. I always had a very simple outlook on life as a response to that. When I first got into the big time, I did, and still do, find it very hard to relate to. I love playing drums and I love traveling. But I find a great deal of difficulty dealing with everything that surrounds that.
So glad your getting into 80's Rush. This is a fantastic track. Alex's solo is epic! Many great tracks to check out from Signals, Grace under Pressure and Power Windows from the 80's 👍👍🎶
This and Losing It are my favorites off this album. BLISTERING solo from Alex. You guys need to start doing it like Just JP and read the lyrics after listening to the song.
Love you two! I've been watching your channel for several years now! FYI. Both Geddy and Alex played the Taurus peddle synthesizer. Most often with Alex playing the bass notes while playing guitar, especially when playing twelve string, and Geddy playing the higher notes while playing keys, bass, or twelve string electric on his double neck! One of the myriad reasons why RUSH were, and always will be the greatest band ever! 👍
I heard The Analog Kid before the Signals album was released…it was April 6,1982 in Baton Rouge…they also played Subdivisions … hearing it then I thought Analog Kid was better…
Hi Guys, brilliant !!! My favourite track from this amazing album !!!! Wait till you do understand the lyrics ! Sooo good ! I remember making a cassette tape for my walkman, and it was all my favourite tracks from Rush albums, and I would walk to a mates house, miles away, instead of getting a taxi, just to listen to Rush when I was walking. It made the journey feel so short. I remember once going onto Blackpool promenade wearing roller skates, and listening to various tapes I had made. When I lived in Belfast there was a place with a roller skating rink, I would go to when I was about 13 years old, till I was 16. Great music and superb fun. There was always an announcement for the speed line .. if you were brave enough. I came off the rink to watch. Never took part myself. A line forms and moves around the circular rink like the second hand of a clock gradually getting bigger as people joined the line....The brave one at the head .... going faster & faster ....then ...they let go, and centrifugal force sent you flying !!!! Oh the memories of my youth. It was a disco on wheels. Oh .. I even remember the music for the speed line ... "Wipe Out" by The Surfaris ...a 60's instrumental. Great reaction to a brilliant track, thankyou ! Byeee Jim X
- find the intended interpretated meanings of the 'fire hydrant'; the precisely cut summer lawn; and so, the Dalmatian in for of the meaning towards "Signals"...
My dad bought me a cassette car stereo for my 17th birthday this album had just come out. And was the first cassette I bought. Great memories miss you dad.
Remember on the signals uk tour (where a group of us went to most of the gigs),Alex broke a string at the very start of the guitar solo at one concert. He wasn’t too happy, but somehow pulled it together, great stuff.
Teo months ago, I fortunately find in a store the 40th Anniversary special edition Vinyl picture disc of SIGNALS. One of my favorite Rush albums and now one of my favorite vinyls. A gem.
I gave this album a good amount of listens when it first came out and really liked it, but it's been a long time since I gave it a spin. I forgot how good of a Rush song this really is. I'm "working" my way through their discography chronologically and only a couple more before I get to enjoy this album again!!!
As I've discovered in my over 60 years on this planet ... The bands i enjoy dont produce bad music. Rush Chicago Steely Dan ELO are at the top of my list. Enjoy N & L reactions though i lean a little towards Alexa 😉🔥
DAT RIFF! 😍 A much tighter and relatively leaner production compared to later albums (huzzah Terry Brown), which really brings out the power trio elements these guys were masters of by this point. Plus it's fitting that "analog" is in the title because this was toward the end of the analog phase before everything went digital in the 80's (boo!) and those phat synths create such a thick backing in those more expansive sections.
Haha! I was there with a friend, my brother and my girlfriend at the time. I was soo blessed to see that show and with good people that appreciated the music :). Though I was VERY sad that they didn't play "Losing It" at our show, but at the next venue in LA at the Forum, and that was the final show :(.
I love it when you do a new Rush reaction Nick and Alexia. It always feels as if I'm hearing it for the first time as well. So I'm now hearing a song I've heard a hundred times with fresh ears; it's quite weird, but lots of fun!
I was first introduced to Rush when I was just 6 years old in 1979. My neighbor introduced me to 2112. In 1981, I bought Moving Pictures on 8-track. Though many of the 70’s fans left Rush behind when they moved to synths in 1982 with Signals, for those longtime fans that never left, we just stuck by every album and enjoyed the fact that they were just so unpredictable. With that said, this song was the one that gives me such fond memories of my childhood. I listened to this album so much. I finally learned the main triplet riff only a few years ago for an acoustic version of this song a friend’s band was doing. He recorded it for an album he’s doing and I did all of the guitar tracks for this song. Thanks for reacting to it and bringing us all down memory lane.
How can anyone NOT air drum to that! Speaking of the drumming, please not the BRILLIANT Crescendo of the drums that EXACTLY mirror Alex’s triplets riff leading into the 2 verses after the 1st chorus. Oh… bass is sublime… in the whole song… advancing the chord progression… and Alex’s face-melting solo. This is truly a hidden gem for the band.
So awesome to drive to! After discovering RUSH with Exit Stage Left at the time Power Windows came out, I started collecting their whole catalog…this album soon became my favorite. Then Hemispheres hooked me….this era is soooo good!
Too many hands on my time Too many feelings Too many things on my mind When I leave, I don't know What I'm hoping to find and When I leave, I don't know What I'm leaving behind (25-year-old me didn't really get this... 50-year-old me fully understands..)
Hey Guys, Really love this Album. One of My favourite Rush Albums. Love 80s Rush. Power Windows, is a BRILLIANT. Keep Rockin'🎸📀🎹 RONNIE Scotland 🏴👍🙂
"When I leave I don't know what I'm hoping to find, and when I leave I don't know what I'm leaving behind." Those lyrics started me on my life journey.
Older RUSH fan here. Saw them about a dozen times. As I get older I love this song more and more. It brings me such emotion as I grew up going from analog to digital and this just touches me so deeply. Thank you for finally getting around to it. Next up, same album. Digital Man.
Hi y’all!! Glad to see you hit up some RUSH!! Perfect song to come back to!! This is a perfect mixture of the old rock sound mixed with the newer synth stuff! Just a killer song! Is live to see y’all do it live! Hope you and all the family is well! Gos bless… from Texas!!
I 'think' this may be the first song where Lifeson uses an pitch shifter in a guitar solo. I think he uses it again in "The Weapon" from Signals. Then in the next album, he uses one in "Distant Early Warning" and "Red Sector A".
So I go Back-and-forth with Moving Pictures and Signals as my favorite Rush albums...this song is stellar Rush and is only #3 on this album for me behind Subdivisions and Digital Man(both in my Top 10)...amazing record! This song is definitely in my top 20 Rush and probably inside top 15...ranking 11-20 is harder than 1-10 for my favorite band!!!🤘
With Rush being my favorite band since 1976, I always look forward to your Rush reactions. And this one was awesome as usual. I think you guys will really love the last song on the last ever Rush album, Clockwork Angels. It’s called The Garden. It brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. I am thinking you guys will probably have the same reaction. Very emotional.
I love Neil’s lyrics on this one especially the chorus. I grew up in a state bordering Ontario and those lines really resonate with mental imagery from childhood. The hi hat pattern during the chorus was something I had to figure out when I first heard it and it still shows up in my playing occasionally to this day.
The Analog Kid and the song Digital Man is like a part 1 and 2. The Analog Kid is like the dreamer drawn by the big city. Some say it's a reference to Neil, leaving the small town and traveling to the UK and eventually joining Rush and touring the world. Digital man, imo is a person who's a workaholic, constantly on the go. There is a reference where the band says the idea for the song was based on a guy doing studio work for them and talking about how busy he was with no time to rest. There are two movies that kinda bring the idea of the songs to the big screen. The Secret of my Success (Micheal J Fox) is the Analog Kid, dreaming of the big city and Click (Adam Sandler) is the Digital Man, constantly on the go and has no time for family and living life. Ironically both Fox and Sandler are Rush fans, which makes me wonder if both songs had an influence on the movies.
You need to check out Xanadu live . It was done in 81 I believe but the song was written in 76. Pay close attention to the video. You will see every sound that you hear is them. There were no triggers, backing tracks, any of that stuff. I would say the live version is better than the studio version.
Prioritizing the musical end of things on first listen is an excellent plan. Someone else (another great RUclipsr) has been reacting to Clockwork Angels while reading the story and lyrics. He wondered whether paying so much attention to the story upfront was a good idea or whether it was actually getting in the way of focusing on the music. I think it's a valid point. I have loved this song since I first heard it in '82. Every last thing about it. The lyrics are semi-autobiographical and partially a continuation of the theme of the "restless dreams of youth" in the suburbs or the sticks.
Analog Kid is my absolute favorite tune just speaks to me. Red Sector A is lyrically powerful. You are still in the 70s and moving into the 80s. Going to take a while to get to 2012.
Nick & Lex, I love when you listen to Rush. I probably say this every time you do Rush. But besides the Beatles, Rush has always been my favorite band. I started from the very beginning. I seen their very first concert with Neil Peart in America. They was the opening act for Uriah Heep with the middle act being Manfred Mann's Earth Band. I never missed them when they came to town, which is 26 times counting the 4 times they opened for other acts. I hope you have some more coming soon. One of my favorites off the Signals album is Losing. But what I would really love for you both to hear & I say this all the time to is. Please do The Garden from their last studio album Clock Work Angels. It's one of my all time favorite songs by them. It's just such a beautiful song & totally different from anything else they've ever done. It's got such a great message to it & It hits me even more since Neil's passing. Great video guys, keep up the good work.
Music takes you places. In this case, when Rush drops into that smooth synth/drum break, it *always* makes me think of my junior year in high school, learning how to use Apple //e computers and how I thought that technology was the greatest thing and that things were just going to get better and better because of it. These days, it's just more of the feeling associated with it, than the details.
Definitely a great song from a great album! No surprise that you both loved the song! I don't typically comment but you two are a joy to watch. Eventually, I will suggest songs from the Canadian group Saga as their fan base typically loves Rush. You two are a treasure!
Some time in 1983…19 year old me…NAD 3020 amp, Dual CS505 deck, Wharfedale Laser 80 speakers trying to annoy my parents but my mum was so cool that she loved Rush! Turns out she was watching them on The Old Grey Whistle Test in the mid 70’s when 10 year old me had no idea what real music was. 😆
Has Lex had a chance to listen to any of the Thin Lizzy songs from your recent marathon yet? Maybe, when time allows, have her react to songs you really liked, all artists.
She has heard everything so far. Her favorite song form the last marathon was Renegade 🤟I am sure that she will make a marathon whenever time and her back permits it.
'Signals' is a MASTERPIECE!
"A fawn-eyed girl with sun browned legs dances on the edge of his dreams" is one of my favorite Rush lyrics.
It’s so freaking good!
I totally agree!!! Brilliant line of what every teenage boy grows into experiencing…
THAT is why it is Brilliant!!!
R.I.P. Neil
..and her voice rings in his ears like the Music of the Spheres
"You move me
You move me
With your buildings and your eyes
Autumn woods and winter skies
You move me
You move me
Open sea and city lights
Busy streets and dizzy heights
You call me
You call me"
Just keep going right thru Signals. Greatness awaits!
A great coming of age song with incredible lyrics, the line of "When I leave I don't know what I'm hoping to find & When I leave I don't know what I'm leaving behind" is such a perfect quote for an adolescent moving out on their own for the first time... A top 5 all-time Rush song for sure. Glad you guys liked it.
Epic Alex solo
I like your icon! Looks familiar 🤔.
Top 5? Please.
Almost makes the Top 10 for me. Definitely the most underrated Rush song.
#2 after Xanadu but it did make my 267 list
The bass is so present and powerful in Rush, geddy is really one of the best bass player ever. RIP Rush, and thanks for all the good songs, memory and shows! 🤘

That Alex solo, for Christ Sake!!!!!
This song is perfection. All-time fav. Digital Man, Losing it etc. One of their best albums.
'S I G N A L S' = M A S T E R P I E C E!

This and Losing It are my favorites off this album. BLISTERING solo from Alex. You guys need to start doing it like Just JP and read the lyrics after listening to the song.
Funny, over the years I kinda think they just got better expressing themselves and evolving as only few do. Just a humble observation
I forgot this song it never got much air play even up here in Canada

Too many hands on my time
Too many feelings
Too many things on my mind
When I leave, I don't know
What I'm hoping to find and
When I leave, I don't know
What I'm leaving behind
(25-year-old me didn't really get this... 50-year-old me fully understands..)
Hey Guys,
Really love this Album.
One of My favourite Rush Albums.
Love 80s Rush.
Power Windows, is a BRILLIANT.
Keep Rockin'🎸📀🎹

"When I leave I don't know what I'm hoping to find, and when I leave I don't know what I'm leaving behind."
Those lyrics started me on my life journey.
Older RUSH fan here. Saw them about a dozen times. As I get older I love this song more and more. It brings me such emotion as I grew up going from analog to digital and this just touches me so deeply. Thank you for finally getting around to it. Next up, same album. Digital Man.
More RUSH 🎉🎉. At last 😊
Hi y’all!! Glad to see you hit up some RUSH!! Perfect song to come back to!! This is a perfect mixture of the old rock sound mixed with the newer synth stuff! Just a killer song! Is live to see y’all do it live! Hope you and all the family is well! Gos bless… from Texas!!
Hi guys hope you’re keeping well. Yes you can always use more Rush :) Great reaction as always.
Digital Man as a drummer is my favorite off Signals!
Nice reaction. Can't go wrong with Rush. Good stuff.
RUSH = MASTERCLASS
I read in his book the story. It was autobiographical from when he was on vacation with his family, and a fawn-eyed girl that he never forgot.
You need to check out Xanadu live . It was done in 81 I believe but the song was written in 76. Pay close attention to the video. You will see every sound that you hear is them. There were no triggers, backing tracks, any of that stuff. I would say the live version is better than the studio version.
One of their best songs. So underrated
I say that after most Rush songs right afterwards. They have a lot of "best songs ever!".
In close agreement...Hemispheres through Signals and PoW for me...Grace is # 7
Prioritizing the musical end of things on first listen is an excellent plan.
One song that doesn't get a lot of play but is very much worth a listen is The Necromancer
Analog Kid is one of my favourites, love the fast beat and just about everything in this song.
I HAVE all those guitars too.
As others have mentioned, PLEASE do "Digital Man!"
