  • This is the explanation to be or not to be a vegetarian by Ven Dr K Sri Dhammananda, Born Martin Gamage in the village of Kirinde in Matara, Sri Lanka, Ven Dhammananda spent most of his life and career in Malaysia. He was ordained as a novice monk (samanera) at the age of 12 and was fully ordained in 1940. After arriving in Malaysia-then known as Malaya-in 1952, Dhammananda established himself as the foremost Theravada Buddhist monk in Malaysia and Singapore. His many books are widely read, and contributed greatly to introducing Buddhism to many English-speakers in Southeast Asia and beyond.

"they did not have a choice", today the opposite is true. The meat being sourced is linked to the business of killing. I source meat for family but avoid consuming it. Monks and nuns are not allowed to request the food offering but they can give instruction on the avoidance of causing suffering. Ven Dr K Sri Dhammananda has made examples of situations were the consuming of meat is unavoidable.
Knowing that a creature surfers a death, at time quiet cruel, can you as a practitioner of the Buddhist dharma joyfully share the flesh of such creature if an alternative is available. Give a dharma talk on the suffering of the livestock industry and explain that just as those that kill the creature incur so those that encourage incur. Monks and nuns are not excluded.
Buddha taught to seek a un-polluted environments to practice. To avoid loud and crowded places and seek your food from alms round. Stopping to accept food from the first person who offers it and return to your resting place and to share it. Not to seek out the houses of those who offer meat. Its to do with surrender / negation of the self. The approach is all or nothing and there is no use having lawyers arguing exclusions to the dharma.

Kamma (Karma) we create not by action. Action along can not create Kamma (Karma). We must do things intentionally either kindness, compassion sympathy or cruelty. If these things are working in the mind to do this it'll become good or bad Karma.

It's only the quality of mind that matter. If you are vegetarian, do you indirectly kills bugs and various animals that live depend on plants through harvesting and chemicals? Or you think that certain animals are better than others? Do you see the flaws in your reasoning already?

Yes there are degree of difference between varrious animals
Killing goats and killing insects has a large degree of difference between them
U can live a healthy and comfortable life without eating any animals and just eating vegeterian food
But U can't sustain yourself without eating any plants which may cause death of some insects
Here the question is about the amount of pain which we impart to other living organisms ??
Insect's have a Much less developed nervous system as compared to the nervous system of animals.
So they don't experience that degree of Pain while they are killed as compared to animals
If you don't find any degree of difference between killing insects and killing animals, then I don't think U will find any degree of difference between killing animals and killing Human being
By the way Eating animals causes more number of death to insects, plant, bugs, more deforestation, more water wastage then just eating vegetables
It takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just 1 pound of edible animal flesh. According to the USDA and the United Nations, using an acre of land to raise cattle for slaughter yields 20 pounds of usable protein. That same acre would yield 356 pounds of protein if soybeans were grown instead"”more than 17 times as much!. Producing the grain that is used to feed farmed animals requires vast amounts of water. It takes about 300 gallons of water per day to produce food for a vegan, and more than 4,000 gallons of water per day to produce food for a meat-eater. You save more water by not eating a pound of beef than you do by not showering for an entire year.
It should be no surprise, then, that food for a vegan can be produced on only 1/6 of an acre of land, while it takes 3 1/4 acres of land to produce food for a meat-eater. If we added up all the arable land on the planet and divided it equally, every human would get 2/3 of an acre"”more than enough to sustain a vegetarian diet, but not nearly enough to sustain a meat-

I differ from the monk. What we eat is essential for spiritual life. If you kill someone for your food, you can't be spiritual, and you are just a hypocrite. Buddha's teaching got diluted, and the fundamental essence was changed.
Just refer to the Panchsheel, the Five precepts or five rules set in Buddhism ànd are the most crucial system of morality for Buddhist laypeople. (Quoted from Wikipedia).
The first precept itself consists of a prohibition of killing both humans and all animals. (again quoted from Wikipedia).
So to accept none vegetarian food for a Buddhist itself means negating the fundamental teachings of Buddhism.

I am a vegetarian but only because whenever I see a piece of meat, I see a life that once was. I wouldn't eat a dead person or monkey, tiger etc.. so why should I view cows, chicken, fish any different..... eating meat, doesn't sit well with me morally.

There are three things for a karma to complete
      1. Intention
      2. Action
      3. Completion of the action.
So if you do not have the intention to kill, the karma won't complete. The strongest part of the karma is your intention. If you do not eat meat with the intention of killing but because of hunger I think there won't be bad karma. However it is better to be a vegetarian for the health benefits

Humans are omnivores by nature. Buddhist or not, humans have been omnivores since cave dwelling times. Biology and evolution pretty much states this fact, so I see no "sin/bad karma" for doing something that you as a human was already evolutionary/biology design to be. Am I saying you can't be vegan/vegetarian? Of course not, its your choice. But before any religion tells you on what you should or shouldn't eat, remember that science and evolution says otherwise ;)
