Trading off the rhythm and the melody is also a common practice in bluegrass and traditional Irish bands. A single instrument (or sometimes more) will play the lead line, while everyone else fills various accompanimental roles. Over the course of an entire piece, each instrument will get a chance to shine, without any individual player getting an unfair share of prominence. However, I'd imagine that it takes a lot more practice and good timing to do it with just the two or you, since you both have to switch roles at precisely the right moment to keep the music flowing.
