I grew up watching my grandpa and his buddies playing bocce; my takeaway was whichever team yelled the loudest and waved their hands most effectively won, lol. It was all in fun, lots of bluffing and bluster, as well as legit gaming. Great after dinner game, while enjoying a little glass of icy cold lemoncello!

Thank you for explaining the game. I grew up traditional Italian in Washington State but this is one thing my beautiful mother never taught us. I had 13 aunts and uncles on my mothers side, all full blooded Italian, along with my mother. 14 relatives plus my grandfather from Italy on my mothers side. My dad is also Italian yet never talked about the game. I have a set of bocce balls that are medium weight (I feel it's a great weight for all ages) and a neighbor and I want to try the game. Your video helped me a lot.
Isabella A Rossellini in Italy it's usually played by old people all year round. Young kids also play during summer at the beach, often with sets of plastic bocce full of water. In Italy most stands in beach towns have very cheap plastic sets, either in kid size or adult size, but obviously you can't use the plastic ones on cement or asphalt. Only on sand or grass. ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51sn2W9vKTL._SX300_.jpg www.toyx.it/open2b/var/catalog/images/6849/0-f68fcced-680.jpg ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51npYNBDPyL._SY300_.jpg i00.i.aliimg.com/photo/v1/283119424/Bocce_Ball_Set.jpg cdn2.eminza.it/site_deco_ext/images/rep_articles/gra/pe/petanque-boules-x-8_30840.jpg
Just recently acquired a bocce set and turned to RUclips for instructions and I must say that THIS video was so enjoyable & informative and I've no doubt that every time I play Bocce, I will hear you two in my mind. Thank you!
Had a chance to play this game with an Italian neighbor who had such a Bocce green in their back yard. Great game to enjoy during patio parties and BBQs.
My city just finished constructing four tournament-spec'd Bocce courts. There's a local enthusiasts' club that raised a large chunk of the funds needed to construct the courts, and I plan to join the group and start participating in the Sunday night recreation league. Thank you for a very informative video on the basic rules.
Thank you! What a great concept, to have free bocce games while you wait for a table! I am in a retirement community and will play this, very easy on the body!
Thank you for explaining the Italian game of bocce ball! I really enjoyed the dialogue and examples of play! Have a great rest of the 2020 year! Stay safe stay healthy mangia bene! Think positive, stay negative....😷
Nice! Not only do I wish we had courts like these outside of a local restaurant, but now I'm really hungry for some breaded veal cutlet, homemade pasta and a glass of vino!
I can see how bocce balls can get broken. There seems to be a global mixing of Italian bocce and French pentaque. Your inclusion of pentaque at 3:56 and 4:28 demonstrates this. Though the balls visually appear the same, the bocce balls are generally made of resin as is the pallino or pollina. The pentaque balls are generally made of hollow steel and the cochonnet or jack is wood. Bocce is typically palm up release bowling and pentaque is palm down release backhand tossing. These are different games and resin does not stand up to the impact abuse of pentaque. I don't play either game but just acquired a quality second hand bocce set and have been researching the game. Just passing on info.
You're welcome. I had played bocce once years ago but the weight of the set was too light and game play was just OK. Now that I tried a proper size and weight Bocce set, I find the game is far more enjoyable.
Just acquired a Petanque set. Found correct spelling. It was in a second hand store listed as a Bocce set. They are smaller but the steel ball weight is impressive. The cochonnet is not the traditional wood but a gold tone plated steel ball. I guess that is to survive repeated impacts. Just need to make a scoring and throwing ring.
This was great I was trying to find a yard game to do during this Covid19 lock down and discovered you guys are here in Tennessee. So once were no longer locked down I will be heading to your place to eat and play some bocce.
I've heard of Bocce but had no clue what it was, some sort of food maybe...ok, so I live a sheltered life but I learn something new every day or maybe every month. Looks interesting...I believe I could do this, especially knowing I can hold a beer in one hand...who knew! Oh yeah...great video!
I usually play bocce, but I'm not so good at it. But I want to be much better. I really like ball games. Thank you for the advice. You got a new subscriber :)
Great video, very informative. I first learned about bocce ball through playing it in a few different video games over the years and I've always been interested in it. I recently was fortunate to find a heavy duty set of bocce balls at a thrift shop and bought it with the intent to learn to play! My only complaint about this video is there is no discussion of how to set up a playing field: what size should it be Dimension wise, for your front to back wall and distance between your side walls but perhaps (unlike most things in life), the Size Doesn't Matter?
As a kid the field was anywhere and we got very creative,up and down inclines, around trees, etc. Regulation fields are very intimidating as they are 90 feet long x I think 12 if I'm not mistaking. But only pros can really play on those as they are too big. Ours at the restaurant are 55 feet long by 12. You can make an inexpensive and portable field with 4 in plumbing pipes. They make a nice light boarder.
I am Italian and have practiced bocce inconsistently for around twenty years as a hobby. In a nutshell: I know its rules perfectly, but I suck spectacularly at it! Never guessed anybody actually played the game in Nashville, OMG! For most Italians, who have never touched a boccia in their life, it is rather sort of a socializing ritual than a real sport: you get some snacks, maybe a glass of wine or a beer, and in the meanwhile you casually throw a couple low-end water- or sand-filled bocce on the beach. For elder people, it is another story: they used to play the game as a pastime after a day of hard work in the field or the factory. They did not see it as a sport --- good Lord, no! There was no such thing as a 'sport' for them, i.e. an intentional expenditure of physical energy just for the sake of competing *and* keeping yourself fit. They would keep themselves fit --or exhausted, if you prefer-- by simply doing their labor-intensive job. Playing bocce therefore does not require you to be extremely strong or slim or tall or fast. You have to be patient, strategic, and above all, PRECISE. That is the key, and that is also why the rules have got incredibly complicated: both in order to regulate every possible situation, of course, but also to make the game as demanding and head-scratching as possible. The free-style bocce you guys enjoy there is perfect as it is for entertaining guests. Do not change a bit. But you might want to consider the possibility of introducing some or all the rules of the Punta Raffa style, the most widespread one in Italy and abroad, for those who want to 'give it a bit of kick' and play the game more regularly. If I am not mistaken, the US Bocce Federation provides an English translation of the rules in .pdf format.
Hello Nashville friends! I got a Bocce set a couple of years ago for Father's Day from Bonnie and Garrett. I was refreshing my memory regarding the rules, etc. So I go to RUclips to find a video. Imagine my surprise when I found this place in Nashville. See the video for particulars. Enjoy!
I’m from Valdese, NC which was founded by Italian Protestants (Waldensians). I played Bocce a long time ago but I never heard of that name for the white ball. It was always called the bouccini. I guess it’s a regional variation. I wonder if there are other names for it. As for its origin, I’m thinking it may have been a Roman game as variants of it are played in Europe. I miss playing Bocce.
Just played for the first time a couple of days ago. After 7 games vs. 3 friends I won all of them. "You have been practicing!" Uh, no I haven't. I'm just a natural I guess. Anyway, I am SO hooked now! Love this game.
I have a set of large wooden balls that are all the same color. They have different patterns for teams I think. Are these bocce balls or a different game?
Allen, I posted a link of your bocce sets on our face book page this morning. They look like high quality balls. Tell me if you get any feedback or sales. Chuck

No. I'm a county bowler. Our bowls are much bigger and heavier, and have biases, so they turn, also, you don't drop them. And you have to stand on a mat. There are a lot of rules to bowls!

perfect video, exactly what I needed in a concise and interesting format. Thanks!!!
I was first put off by the length of the video, but this was a complete video worth watching! Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to let us know.
Was brushing up on the rules while on the beach. And you guys are from Nashville!!! Me too. Thanks for the easy lesson!
That was a nice low-key way of explaining the game. .Very enjoyable and instructive. A good party game.

Needed this, been wanting to get into bocce for a while now, thank you!
This was great. I played for the first time this weekend. I also took the class from Patti Nelson. The food at Coco's is great too.
Thanks for saying so! Let us know your there next time you're in the store.
Best video on Bocce I have seen, thanks!
Fantastic information. I am trying to build a court in yard just too small for regulation court. Some of these courts look smaller.
awesome video!! thank you for the easy explanation of the game!!!

Is there a distance someone throws a bocce ball, considered too long to measure?

Well, bocce balls that we use at competitions are made of resin, so I believe that's for an other sport or perhaps it's for beginners or children.
In the heyday of the Catskills, very competitive between the Resorts. Germans vs Italians etc...
Great vid!
Can you tell me the weight and size of the steel pallino?

Can you tell me where I can find the black and white photo at 1:41 to 1:45 of the video? - love that pic!
I think I've seen it on ebay in the past
Some of the video is of Pentaque matches (steel boules), mixed in with Bocce matches.
There's something similar to this one called "Petanque" which is originated in France.
Like a different way to play cornhole or maybe vice versa whichever came out first

Game combines aspects of Curling, Golf, Bowling, Shuffleboard. Played outside or sometimes inside with friends. What's not to love.
Why in the world did you use petanque footage for bocce? The two sports are pretty different in the way the balls are thrown.
there is 3 people on both teams, the captain has the jack/the white ball, after the captain bowls the jack your captain goes again then the other team
How long is the court
I thoroughly enjoy bocce...tho we call it the palinO....and we play to 12.....it is a fine afternoon to spend at the court !
Great sport.
Bocce NEEDS to be on ESPN2 and then the Olympics :)
What's the purpose of showing Pétanque shots, 4.30. when you're explaining Bocce?
How big is your court?
57 fet long by 10 feet across That's the longest and widest we could make it in the front of our property. We had 90 courts in the back at one time but they were so long kids and a lot of people were intimidated by how big it was.

Am i the only one here cuz of app of the day? Thumbs up. 😉

“sliding my balls down the rail” THATS WHAT SHE SAID!!!
let me ask my friend who helped me make the video and get back to you on that.
Yeah it’s an Italian game
Romans played Bocce with stones and carried it to the empire. Everywhere that plays from Iberia to Bulgaria is from the old Empire.
Bowling is the game where you roll the ball as hard as you can but in bocce, you can get close to the jack
I'm playing bocce tomorrow and there is red balls, blue balls and a jack
It is 2400 year old Roman game
Howto hold ball
It's miniature golf for a new generation.
5min 4 sec the rules it says "buy" instead of "by" on the second line
Two teams of two is called doubles and two teams of four is called quadruples
We usually play to 12
This is Bowls, isn't it?
No. I'm a county bowler. Our bowls are much bigger and heavier, and have biases, so they turn, also, you don't drop them. And you have to stand on a mat. There are a lot of rules to bowls!
