Do you work on top of your PhD? If so why? Is your second work in a similar area or totally different like me? How many hours do you work in your second job?
Yes I am a part time DBA student and my research does converge with my profession, in a way. Thank you for these episodes...they are inspirational. I had just started to do the same on my channel to capture my part time experience. Good luck to all!
Currently, about 15 hours non-PhD paid work (tutoring and admin are somewhat related since I'm a writing PhD - retail is soul-crushing but pays good enough) and 3 hours volunteering. I agree, it's not ideal, but the stipend doesn't even cover my living expenses even though I'm in social housing so... girl's gotta do what she's gotta do
Wow, what a full day! It's really inspiring seeing how you balance all the demands on your time and still manage to carve out breaks for yourself and time for walking Lola. At the beginning of the year I was applying for a tutoring side hustle, but my PhD stipend has a condition where we aren't supposed to have a second job. So for now, I'm just focusing on academics but I do miss teaching too :)
That's such a shame about your requirements! When you said that I just panicked and checked if I had any limit on mine. Thankfully I don't (at least from what I can tell), plus my CRT administrator already knows about this work so I assume they would've said something. I don't know what I'd do if I was told I couldn't do it because it actually earns a good bit more than my stipend in far fewer hours...
Similar situation which is achievable specially in covid(remote) environment! But lately I’m thinking to quit and focus only on PhD , overwhelming, but always in my mind work work and work! Haven’t decided this crucial decision , appreciate if I get more advices
Thanks Kaori. I'm trying to figure out how to structure it. I am wondering if I should do a general part for the first half like "developing a clear, confident voice" first? And then launch into the different sci comm talks?
@@PhDandProductivity i think the voice part would be good. the first part can maybe cover general presentation tips that are not necessarily specific to science (voice, speed, tone, timing yourself, etc) and then the second half can transition to tips that might be specific for science communication, like maybe how to breakdown difficult concepts and such.

@@phdpaya Yes I think that's a big problem here for non-EU students :(
Please please! a course like that would be amazing!
Thanks Emily! I think it is something I could’ve benefited from myself!

I think it depends greatly on the type of work. My second job is sooo different to my PhD which makes it easier I think
@@PhDandProductivity my PhD is similar field in programming but different languages, i work during the day and study at night
