It's one thing for them to disagree with how certain female or minority characters are depicted in their media and that's fine. But I don't like it when they use their disagreement of how their depicted as an opportunity to push their culture war narratives by calling their media “Woke or SJW” and it’s really annoying.
Making this video shows that you're threatened by those channels. This is a battle of ideologies on a surface level. I don't agree with everything they say, but to me, they're the only ones left on RUclips with common sense.
Remember how everyone freaked out when they saw a black stormtrooper in The Force Awakens? It was one of the first times I remember Star Wars fans being referenced to as racist. It was kind of heartbreaking. Then they saw the women in the movie and directed their energy towards them. Complaining about writing is one thing, but calling the existence of minorities "woke" is the reason why minorities feel like just existing is a protest. Just breathing is triggering for many. And if just living is triggering for some, you can take that to its logical conclusion.
I remember that too. As a black teen Star Wars fan, it hurt me. Plus it opened my eyes to the silly arguments they make to defend their bigoted opinions under the guise of being a “true fan”.
I don't get why these guys were even mad over that. Stormtroopers are villains. You'd think these people would be happy about seeing more black people dying on screen.
> Then they saw the women in the movie and directed their energy towards them. Yeah, it's interesting to discover that this group is more misogynistic than racist. But it makes a certain kind of sense.
To be fair, there might be a non-racist explanation for that, given the stormtroopers (and by extent, the Empire/First Order) were intended to represent fascist Germany. IDK though.
The reason we have so many crappy movies today is the same as why we had so many crappy movies in the past: bad writing and/or direction. Sure, some small fraction of those may be due to a writer or director trying to push a message, but that's always been true, even before we had "woke culture".
The problem isn't that they push a social message, its that they think doing so will get them a pass for not writing a good story. When criticized for the bad story, they hide behind the social message and claim whoever doesn't like it must be sexist/racist/whatever. Sometimes, as we saw with She-Hulk, they even do this before the audience sees their work.
@@monkeytime9851 I'd say that was still true in the past, it was just less obvious because we didn't have frictionless social media pipelines, so people weren't just chucking out their poorly considered replies to be retweeted by millions of people engaging in their own internet slap fights.
@@monkeytime9851 The problem with this criticism is ignoring the swaths of people who WERE simply implying the presence of a woman as being some prerequisite for a poorly written show. Of course if people are bitching about how your new show is "woke propaganda" before it has even fucking aired based on nothing but teaser clips and bottled up aggression you're going to assume some of that criticism is not coming from a genuine place and is instead just bigoted whining from dumbfucks online. And you would be right in that assumption. Maybe if the banshees didn't start screeching before the damn thing was even made public the creators wouldn't have had reasonable ammunition to call out the dogshit "critique" they were receiving before, as you put it, the audience even sees their work.
People that use word woke as something negative are the same people that say that woke culture is trigger culture, theyre also the same people that start crying when Sarah gets race swapped in tlou hbo series 🤣 Yes, Im ready to be killed now by this dogsh*t community
@@Smoked_out_skeletonsI'll take you up on that. Let me clarify though, when you say you're a constitutionalist, you are refering to the stance that a government derives its authority from and is limited by a body of law? Also, what bearing does being a solider have on the discussion put forth?
I really wish "woke" never got into the zeitgeist. It went from just being socially aware to a joke in the black community to mock hoteps, to bein an argument along with callin someone an "sjw"
Watching this over a year later and it has remained a tool for the alt right as described in the video. But to anyone who was actually woke to the original meaning, using it ironically on the "anti-woke" crowd is objectively funnier. Same goes for "snowflake", when the people being outraged are the racists
Also the "woke agenda" isn't complicated: Increased diversity means more people identifying with the I.P. which means more money. Can't be mad at companies having their cake and eating it too. Kinda ironic to refer to it as Cultural Marxism when it's indicative of the Free Market in practice.
It gets so dumb as well… like when 1917 had a 10 second scene with a Sikh soldier from British Empire in a rat tag group of survivors of various other regiments which had taken heavy casualties fighting… The Culture War lot lost their heads…

Seriously thank you for doing this! I’m so tired of “Woke” being used as an argument. Especially since it distracts from the real issues in the industry.
I’ve been using “woke” to exclusively describe when representation is used as a disingenuous means of putting people like me (non-white) on the screen for the views/cash. Representation matters as a means of reflecting what is true of the culture at large, but when it’s done for profit and profit alone, I have an issue and won’t refrain from using the term in those situations. Perhaps another evolution of the term is in order.
@@EduardoOlidenJr Personally, I'd call what you are describing as exploitative behavior by production companies. The issue with the term "woke" is that it generally is used to refer to anything, which a person might feel is too progressive or just makes them feel uncomfortable. It is really non-descriptive. Instead of people having to formulate well-thought out arguments (like yours) for what they feel is wrong, they just use "woke". In discussions, I've found it impossible to have a constructive conversation with people who use the term. On the other hand, hard-core conservatives, who roll their eyes at the term, have been great and respectful at bringing their point across and been open to discussions about different points of views. That being said - that's just my experience and does not mean this is representative of the experience other people might have had.
Speaking of which, we've almost had an annual moment in 2019 & 2020 where Captain Marvel & Birds of Prey were competed against Alita & Sonic respectively by the anti-woke mob. Which is weirdly fascinating considering both Alita & Sonic doubles down hard on being pro-immigration, especially when Dr Robotnik often slurred Sonic as an "alien".
I mean. Nah the Sonic movies are very right-wing. One of the main characters is a cop and all of Sonic's trademark anti-capitalism and ecoterrorism have been completely and deliberately scrubbed away. You're right about Alita though.

Quoting a nutjob conspiracy theorist on a video about criticizing the right as conspiracy theorists. Hilarious example of left wing cognitive dissonance.
I was watching JL:Gods and Monster yesterday, it's an alternate reality where Superman was raised as a Mexican immigrant. And he was a badass, a little antihero and cynical at times, but pretty good.
It's kinda interesting, the idea that superman's moral principals are kinda result of a position of privilege. Although of SM is absolutely working class he never had to go hungry.
I mean, cannon superman may as well be. immigrant baby that was dropped on American soil by alien parents, worked on a farm from a young life for white people, white girlfriend whose dad hates him for being an alien, speaks Spanish (and every other language), uses a fake identity to work in the country, need i say more?
I saw a channel that called some video games trailers with black female characters woke just because the characters were black or female or both. Like their only criticism of the games trailer was that the game is woke because tbey have a black female character
Imagine what the angry anti-woke will do after learning the animated Justice League show deliberately swapped Hal Jordan and Aquaman for John Stewart and Hawkgirl for diversity reasons. That technically makes the DCAU super woke.
@@PillarofGarbage And they can't say DCEU is dead because of "woke". There were barely any diverse characters so why didn't they support their own anti-woke Justice League movie? In fact the best scenes were the ones with minorities' storylines fleshed out in the Snyder version. I'm hearing we might get Vixen in the new DC lineup. I hope she is one of Waller's agents - everyone has betrayed her and she needs a super weapon.
@@suzygirl1843 I mean technically no. Aquaman was played by a Samoan/Native American actor, Wonder Woman by a Middle Eastern Israeli, and Dwayne Johnson… definitely ain’t white.
Bruce Timm has even said they got flack for using John over Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner. This crap isn't even new. The only difference is people monetizing rage over women, minorities and LGBT people in media.
Another great video. I miss when "woke" as a criticism was used to point out superficial gestures towards progressive politics while those making the gestures are actually quite indifferent or even hostile towards any kind of progressivism. Ironically, a lot of things criticised as being part of the "woke agenda" actually belong to the former category of commodifying progressive politics. Brief, easily removable non-heteronormative moments are the most obvious of these. In some cases, it feels like media that would otherwise be ignored deliberately adds "ambiguous wokeness" to get backlash from reactionaries, which in turn effectively forces anti-reactionaries to support said media. Wokeness as an agenda doesn't exist, but it certainly does seem to exist as a cynical marketing strategy for the rich old white men who care nothing for the actual issues they profit off vaguely gesturing towards.
Realizing this several years ago when the "anti-woke" movement really started gearing up is what catalyzed my shift from Liberal to Socialist. It finally clicked that I agreed with some of their critiques, but they were misidentifying the causes egregiously. By entirely missing the root of the problem (profit incentives for "art" and corporate pandering) they would never contribute to a solution or be satisfied. That, and there was an increasing reliance on "wokeness" for all the problems of mediocre media when it was the core plot or character writing at issue. Just typical reactionary scapegoating.
Part of the problem (besides mediocre media) is that those who are behind the scenes are still white heteronormative cis men who know how to check off the appropriate boxes. It’s cynical at best and meant to undermine any attempt at making “the other” human, which is supposed to be the point of art (commercial or otherwise). Regarding film and television particularly (though not exclusively) the people making the product are still overwhelmingly white male and straight. And though not great for humanity, it would seem less egregious if they actually knew and understood people who are nothing like them. The status quo continues to support segregation and white supremacy.
I've been making this Super Heroe Universe(that is *unofficially somewhere in the Marvel and DC multiverse), and I often think, "damn. With the movie/film/novel review climate now, my stories might be considered 'woke garbage' with an agenda to certain people." For context, I'm a Latino, and my stories feature a lot of Latino characters with messages about the problems that affect my community and people and the issues that exist within our community. I initially had apprehensions making these stories because of that. But I've come to realize that I shouldn't be afraid of telling stories because it would no longer be mine or personal. It would be empty.
That is completely fine. When most people complain about woke stuff, they complain how, for example in your case, they would make you a Latino character and as diverse as possible (queer, disabled, LGBT etc.), and use you as a token in their movie that has nothing to do with it (for example, a Latino in Medieval Denmark). They're not Latino (or Latinx as they would call it, dumb as hell, I know), they don't know about your culture, but they know you're not a white straight person that they view as oppressors and they would use your Latino identity as a political weapon they don't truly care about, but lecture us and degrade us as viewers that we don't care about it. So no, if you write a Latino-oriented story, as a Latino, that deals with the everyday life and culture of your people, that is not woke and it's completely ok! Of course, if you go into it without any regards to making it enjoyable to your readers and mock them for not being born Latino basically, that's another can of worms, in the way the woke media operates.
I'm making my own superhero series that is quite "woke". It's got a diverse cast (though it does have a straight white male as the main character) that includes an Asian female, a pansexual female African-indigenous inspired alien, and a gay black male with a multi-racial love interest. The main character is an open leftist, and among the factions in it is a community of aliens welcomed as refugees and given land within the city after their home planet was attacked by an interstellar empire, and they continue to hold to and celebrate their native culture. By the standards of the anti-woke grifters, my story is giga-woke. Defcon Woke. My dream is for it to get big enough for YellowFlash or Eric July or TheQuartering to do a video decrying my series as woke so I can pop onto their Twitters and call them the r-slur.
The most important aspect of these kinds of moral panic is that the threat never goes away. If producers start casting more “traditionally” and sideline POC, women, and LGBTQ+ characters, the people who fear “wokeness” will either move on to another target (“Have you noticed how many characters are left handed?”) or view the change as evidence that the plot is even more insidious than before. “They’re going underground! Where will they strike next?”
We need to start more campaigns about drinking water and going outside to breath fresh air and talking a lot about how breathing is so very important, at first I bet they’ll get condescending, but eventually have to take the opposing view of not drinking water and not breathing just for their contrarian nature to remain intact
Left-wing cultural values are often in superhero movies because the ideologies that are opposed to leftism often think suffering is actually a good thing. Heroes in movies want the world to get better, not worse. Do the math.
You’re very naive if you assume that leftist ideologies don’t derive in any suffering or that opposing those ideologies means that you’re inherently pro suffering
@@ajitadonismanilal9105 There are not really that much conservative Writers in Comics. It started with Superman. His first comics would get certain people quite mad. And there is a lot more like that. Read the first Secret Empire Story from Captain America for another example.
It always strikes me when you see B roll of the talking heads who are on one about "wokeness" again, and 99% of them are white dudes, often with beards, sitting in rooms full of nerd-coded merch. Like, it just really shows who they think art and the world is "for." As if the women, LGBTQ folks, POC, etc., should be thanking them just for being allowed to have a turn on the Xbox at all, when Mom makes them, of course. The notion that the world could be about anything other than them and their fantasies is just terrifying to them.
As if it's only white guys that care about this. Jeez. Eric July exists. Sydney Watson exists. That Star Wars Girl exists. Just because the majority of talking heads are white, doesn't mean their audience and those that agree with them are. Left wing propaganda is a problem. The message. The moral standing. The social commentary NEVER makes up for a good story or a good character. It's just as annoying as the Christian films. It's a poor excuse for shitty writing.
@@ShadowSonic2 if I was born in that time period, who knows, but considering racism was an actual problem back then... I doubt I would have felt like it was unnecessary. Now however, if they made a film like that today, like Get Out, I probably would have a problem with it. Thing is, I enjoyed Get Out. I've said this many times by now, if the film is good, the message doesn't detract from it. Get Out is a good movie with decent writing, great acting, great direction, and pretty good cinematography. Now, if the movie was poorly written, had unremarkable acting, bland direction and cinematography, like a Marvel film, then the message would be polish on a turd. And that's for the people who agree with the message, if they don't, and the message is blatant and hateful, why would anyone enjoy the film? There is nothing phase 4 and now phase 5 has to offer that previous phases haven't done better. There is nothing in Marvel that is woke that indie arthouse films haven't done better.
Please try actually watching these "talking heads" and assessing their arguments based on their own merits, not their skin color. Don't form judgements while sitting comfortably in your own echo chamber. I ask that you check out Critical Drinker, or Nerdrotic, or Eric July (a black dude) and hear them out before you decide whether or not you agree with them. Don't just take POG's word for it and hop on the hate train without receipts. And don't forget, POG is building his brand reacting to these people - it's profitable for him to keep the hate and misinformation flowing. Back to your comment about "99% of them are white dudes, often with beards". You are outright dismissing their criticisms based on their skin color, you know that right? It sounds an awful lot like....what's that word....? Begins with R and ends with ism. Inconvenient fact, however, is that there are often women and people of color who participate in these discussions or comment approval on these videos. What's your problem with beards?
@@bryanfine986 exactly. They love black people when they're liberal, but when they're conservative they're Uncle Toms and White Supremacist traitors to their own race. They love women when they're 3rd wave feminist, but when they say that biological men can't be women, they're terfs and deserve to be canceled. I don't understand how you can claim to be for all women or all black people or all gay people when there are many women, black people, and gay people that think progressive ideology is damaging to society. Also, the communities that preach inclusivity and acceptance are really horrible at allowing people to have differing opinions from their own. I think they hate beards because they can't grow one.
I don't have any problems with someone throwing criticism at a work that happens to be woke but when they imply the wokeness itself is a problem that's a red flag.
Thats the point tho. They are misusing the word woke. Unless the movie tv book is actively fighting against some sort of societal injustice. (Which exist but hardly as often as they imply ) Having a minority as a protagonist or being powerful isn’t woke. Its just a character being the lead and has the ability to kick ass
@@bdboricua3128 It's woke when the intention is to spread an agenda of anti-white propaganda through entertainment, and replacing white men from their rightful place. The west belongs to Europeans and those of their heritage. That it's been invaded and infected with "diversity" is bad and shameful. I wouldn't go to China, Africa, the Middle-East or anywhere else and expect their people to be replaced by other minorities for the sake of a diversity quota. It's disgusting and it permeates all entertainment. All the men are replaced by women like parasites sucking the nutrients of a greater being. The infuriating thing about Alt-Right trolls is that they only label things as “woke” when they perceive it as bad. If it’s an undeniably great piece of art, they either ignore it, ignore the politics of it entirely or try to fit it into the very framework that it goes against. Of the top of my head: Mad Max Fury Road, Snowpiercer, Justice League Gods & Monsters, the Suicide Squad, 90% the Avengers movies, Avatar, Andor all have lefty subtext (or even straight up text) that is ignored by them because “why are you trying to bring politics into this cool storrry!”
People are acting like 80s coming of age movies or films like Top Gun or Footloose didn't have ideology whatsoever. Part of the definition of culture is that it involves an specific vision of the world, and such vision is canalized through pretty much everything.
If Avater the last Airbender came out today, then every anti-woke-tuber would have called it woke garbage, based on the first episodes. I’m starting to think that “woke” just means anything other than white, wealthy, Christian, conservative, heterosexual, cis, neurotypical “alpha” males with a specific body type. Hell, even Covid is considered “woke” these days (or at least caring about it and/or acknowledging it.)
That's not exactly the case, though. In my opinion, wokeism is actively going against the straight white Christian male. It's everywhere in the media like commercials, TV shows, movies, etc. A T.V show example would be "The Boys". The blonde haired blue eyed straight male with the American flag as his cape is the villain. During the show, there are clear examples of them throwing jabs at Christianity. A movie example would be "The Purge". Again, another jab by showing white Christian families as evil murderers. Those were just some examples, and there are plenty more. Wokeism isn't just the fact of including all races, ethnicities, and genders, but purposefully going out of the way to trash white men, and Chrisitanity.

I never knew the origin of "woke" but I do remember it's original intention as well as the change to its current terminology. As a student of history it's frightening to see millions of Americans willingly walking down a fascist path without actually realizing it.
The origin of "woke" as a slang term wasn't explained in this video either. It started out as a Black American Vernacular English (the blatantly altered grammar of saying "woke" rather than "awake" is the clue here) offshoot of the term "conscious", as in conscious and aware of the ways white supremacy - not "social injustice" in general but white supremacy specifically - permeates American society and has the black American community under siege. The term carried that context within the confines of black America for decades, until the mid-2010s, when the combined factors of the advent of social media and the increased visibility of high-profile killings of unarmed black people by the police pushed the discussions featuring this term into the forefront of the digital public, where it got absorbed into the mainstream lexicon and its definition was expanded to serve as an umbrella for all marginalized groups, and this video picks it up from that point on.
everything in this video is so accurate and what i (and other lgbt people and especially poc) have been saying for years. thank you for speaking up, its just frustrated that every time i try to say something like this, i get shot down immediately because people see me as a woman and don't take me seriously
I'm not trying to be a smartass, but it could be because you don't have a very commanding presence. People tend to listen to people who are well articulated, doesn't talk slow, and speaks loudly but with confidence. It's harder for women because they tend not to be put in the same situations as men often do.
If someone complains about something being "woke", I take that as a "Tell me you're a fascist without telling me you're a fascist" moment - likewise accusations of "Cultural Marxism".
This was absolutely the best video on this topic I have ever seen. You gave a perfect deconstruction of the term as used by the radical right, and I will reference your talking points if I ever get into an argument about this again. Whenever I have a conversation with someone who uses "woke" as an insult about entertainment, they use this frustrating pivot from just arguing against corporate pandering to insisting that minorities should be excluded from media entirely-especially if they ever once make "bad media". People who were excluded from media creation in the past are only just now getting to tell stories and make art. Some of that art is going to suck.
That’s why I often call out the BS fallacy of “go woke go broke”. It’s not like terrible media started when projects started having lead and main characters be someone other than white straight guys.
Some sucking is all right. Every single one of them , then u start to see a problem. And dont u dare deny there is an agenda. All the men are incompetent. @@laragallahue7127 If that's the character's whole personality and expect people to sympathize just because they are on the spectrum, it would be considered "woke".
The bit at around 12:10 brings to mind a quote from Michael Parenti in Blackshirts & Reds, not exactly the same thing but it's definitely an interesting parallel "During the cold war, the anticommunist ideological framework could transform any data about existing communist societies into hostile evidence. If the Soviets refused to negotiate a point, they were intransigent and belligerent; if they appeared willing to make concessions, this was but a skillful ploy to put us off our guard. By opposing arms limitations, they would have demonstrated their aggressive intent; but when in fact they supported most armament treaties, it was because they were mendacious and manipulative. If the churches in the USSR were empty, this demonstrated that religion was suppressed; but if the churches were full, this meant the people were rejecting the regime's atheistic ideology. If the workers went on strike (as happened on infrequent occasions), this was evidence of their alienation from the collectivist system; if they didn't go on strike, this was because they were intimidated and lacked freedom. A scarcity of consumer goods demonstrated the failure of the economic system; an improvement in consumer supplies meant only that the leaders were attempting to placate a restive population and so maintain a firmer hold over them. If communists in the United States played an important role struggling for the rights of workers, the poor, African-Americans, women, and others, this was only their guileful way of gathering support among disfranchised groups and gaining power for themselves. How one gained power by fighting for the rights of powerless groups was never explained. What we are dealing with is a nonfalsifiable orthodoxy, so assiduously marketed by the ruling interests that it affected people across the entire political spectrum." It's definitely a consistent technique of the right, if everything they do is wrong then it's proof they must be evil. It'd be funny how often these people argue that they use FACTS and LOGIC to then just ignore material reality in favour of contradictory falsehoods if it wasn't so fucking terrifying how widespread it is
I usually joke that if giant-sized X-Men was made today, it would be considered woke. It diversified the xmen and gave people different thoughts and ideas to be a mutant. It's surprising to see my childhood ideas in the media. It feels like people had the same ideas. Namor is Mexican and the Adams family is brown. All we're missing is Mexican Superman (a superman raised by Mexicans instead of the Clarks. I would like him to be raised by Nahuatl-speaking Nauas to give the outsider feeling more plus you can bring colorism which I feel like it's neglected in media) by doing stories from pre-WWII golden age comics. That original superman is going to make those anti-wokeness people have panic attacks. Lol.
I read some letters Marvel got after giant-sized X-Men and the main difference would be that today certain people would try hide their racism better behind calling something "woke".
I don't even want this to be sugar-coated anymore. The word woke used to mean something amazing. But, now it just means anything that isn't white male cishet able-bodied white collar Christian that probably is a Hitler apologist that brings up his "art". Woke = reality. These people don't want to live in the real world where not everything is flipping Anglo-Saxon. The fact that these people associate being woke as an inherent flaw easily plays into everything the Nazis and the KKK fought for believing. A belief that anything that isn't what was mentioned previously is inferior by design. Woke = minority
What sucks about this anti-woke movement most is that you can’t legitimately criticize any products surrounded in these controversies. Like, take she-hulk for example. I came from it feeling that it was poorly paced, most of its jokes landing flat, and just was not written well for the source material they were basing it on (as well as it being a clear sign of marvel’s poor treating of their vfx team), or that I think Disney’s live action remakes only hurt the original films as they continue to play into the “animation is only for kids” mindset. Yet I can’t say either of these without at least a handful of people telling me I’m just part of the anti-woke agenda and my thoughts are invalid (people assume I’m anti black Ariel in the latter case). This is made worse if the company that made it hide behind this instead of addressing criticis.. Basically, it doesn’t matter what side you take in this, you don’t win
For me its about story and character. Rey had a very promising start in The Force Awakens. It was when she started doing things that went against the rules of the series, being able to use a Jedi mind trick on a stormtrooper, or being able to fight Kylo Ren to a draw with no training that I started having problems. If the Sequel trilogy had treated Rey the same way the original trilogy treated Luke, allowed her to make bad choices for understandable reasons and fail when she did, I believe there'd be a lot less backlash against her now. I'm not saying that some of the backlash isn't sexism but there were other, more reasonable factors too.
I find it fascinating, in a kind of sad way, that I feel like the role of the word "woke" in conservative circles is functionally equivalent to the word "racist" or "sexist", etc., in liberal circles, as far as how it factors into arguments. I've noticed, when I mention that something is racist or homophobic or what have you, to conservatives, it's treated as if I've used a meaningless buzz word to shut down conversation. Like, "Oh, every time We want to have an opinion on something, You Guys always want to say we're being racist, etc." In their eyes, it's just a button pushed to end critical thinking. When in reality, I don't consider "This is racist," to be the end of the conversation. I think "This is racist; let's look at how it's racist, let's look at where this idea comes from, let's consider how we can avoid this in the future," is a worthwhile conversation to have. And from my perspective, "woke" is just a button they push to end critical thinking; whenever I see them use it, it seems to come from a place of "Thing is woke, woke is bad, thing is bad." I've never once seen any depth to the ideology outside of "I've been made to see a gay relationship in a show I chose to watch, which is woke, which is bad," or "I've been made to see a diverse cast in a show I chose to watch, which is woke, which is bad." It makes me wonder if they believe there's more to it. If they think "racist" is just the "Shut up" button, is that just a symptom of the fact that "woke" is /their/ "Shut up" button, and they assume liberals are doing the same thing, or is the situation exactly symmetrical and, from their perspective, there's some amount of dimension to the concept? In my experience, no; like I said, I've only ever seen the term used in a straightforward, shallow "There is representation in this show, which is woke, which is bad." But I guess I find it interesting to think about.
If you haven't heard of it, it sounds like you're talking about a "thought terminating cliche." They are used to abruptly end discussion and signal a refusal to think any further on the matter. I definitely agree that "woke" gets used that way, and that reactionaries think "racism" or "sexism" serve that function for leftists and progressives.
Orwell has a great essay about political language and how easily well-meaning terms can be co-opted so they mean nothing. I can't remember what it's called off the top of my head but if one googles "Orwell language corrupts thought essay" they should find it. 10/10 would recommend
You mean words like racist, sexist, homophobic, feminist etc. Yeah you throw it out at any small and broad thing and they lose their worth and meaning pretty fast. Its interesting to see that woke has fallen under the same trap. Looks like both sides are equally throwing shit at eachother

My problem with these type of stories is, as a Jew, they tell me, my story is not worth telling. Why is Ms. Marvel's story as a Pakistani Muslim more important to tell than Scarlet Witch's as a Jew? Why is the focus only on African Americans, Muslims, women and LGBTQ+ stories and not on any other minority? Why can I only point to Magneto as good Jewish comic adaptation, when African Americans can point to whole movies and shows?
@@ShadowSonic2 still she is Jewish, yet they made her a product of Nazi experiments in the movie. 9:10 Daredevil’s Christianity was never even mentioned or prevalent in his stories. In fact his religion was only ever emphasized by Frank Millar on his run of the character. Daredevil is a good character because he’s selfless in the face of selfishness and saved a old man at the cost of eyesight and gain powers, and he actually does reflect aspects of Christianity like respecting his father’s wishes over his own, without even a mention of Christianity. With Kamala, you get her religion in the very first page, and ultimately the story was about going against her religion and family just to go to a party, yet she’s rewarded with powers cause “fate,” random gas(nice ripping off Static Shock Marvel) and some bracelets she found in her attic. Subtlety is a lost art.
"Daredevil's Christianity was never a part of his character except in his most popular run, also his character is meant to represent Christianity" lmfao You also forgot to describe why any part of Ms. Marvel's origin story is bad or not nuanced. "I like my religion yet hate the old generation whose views on it don't align with mine" is infinitely more nuanced than "durrrrr he's good so he reflects Christianity" lmfao
@@Peasham Cleary you haven’t been reading, Daredevil is Christian(regardless of the runs) but they did so without even a mention of his religion in his debut, popularly plays no factor in this assessment, Frank Millar ain’t much for subtlety but his run was well done. With Ms.Heretic, the first thing we’re told(didactically) is that she is Muslim, but she goes against her religion by going to a party when she’s not supposed to therefore she does not reflect her religion, but give a indirect mask off moment for the creator Sana Amanat. Regardless of the religious aspects, Ms.Heretic is not nuanced character she’s not allowed to be a character that overcomes selfishness, but rather work as a fill in for the audience with her quirk of being fan girl, there’s hardly much outside of that and she really doesn’t deserve the name Ms.Marvel since her powers(both comics and show) were a…inconsequential coincidence to say the least and don’t actually reflect her or the title she holds, she just got them because they thought it was “cool” thus not nuanced, that name had meaning for Carol Danvers(even Sharon Ventura but that’s another story), Kamala should’ve been named Ms.Magnificent and so she could’ve been salvageable.
@@LegacyComics100 So he wasn't representing Christianity since his debut, that was an addition, and you therefore can't use that to compare him to Ms. Marvel, good to know. There are thousands of different interpretations of Islam, dipshit, just like Daredevil goes against thousands of interpretations of Christianity by not beheading evildoers and their entire families. Only one with their mask off here is you. The vast majority of superheroes do not earn nor deserve their powers and none of Ms. Marvel's stories revolve around her liking Carol, that you even invoke Carol as though SHE deserved or earned her powers is hilarious. I also like how you describe her as selfish and in the very same sentence say that the only thing her character has going is being a fangirl. And she's selfish because... she doesn't have the same incredibly oppressive and regressive interpretation of her religion as her parents have, making Daredevil and every other religious hero who doesn't behead their enemies selfish likewise.
@@Peasham Matt Murdok was never introduced as "Irish Catholic superhero Daredevil". He was just Daredevil who happened to be Irish Catholic. This is a waste of my time, I’m talking to a Google normie. All I’ve went over in my comment is: >Daredevil is Christian, but his debut doesn’t mention his religion but he reflects it through respecting his father’s wishes and he gets his powers through self sacrifice in a city of selfishness. >Ms.Heretic is didactically introduced as a Muslim, but she goes against her religion in her selfless home to go party and she’s rewarded with powers. She was introduced as Marvel’s first Muslim superhero when she isn’t since EVS created Dust in the 2000s, which that’s a funny coincidence to look back on. Really simple to understand regardless it was earned or not, there’s a purpose to those powers narratively.
@@LegacyComics100 Ms. Marvel believes in a progressive reading of Islam whereas her parents believe in a regressive reading of it. They specifically believe that women are to be useless and obedient, whereas she believes the exact opposite, as inspired by her role model Carol Danvers. She likewise wants to help people. Therefore, when she disobeys her parents, which the narrative frames as an unequivocal good thing for her to do, she is rewarded with superpowers that will let her both help others and disprove her parents' outdated beliefs, which are in and of themselves hurting other. As was Carol a role model to her and inspired her to rebel, so too will she be a role model to others. A lot more narrative than "he helped a dude in a town where people don't help dudes", I'd say.
I remember when I saw Gertrude in the Runaways comic for the first time. Seeing a plus size Jewish comic book hero didn’t absolutely rock my world but I felt seen by this character in a way I never had before. It felt good. Seeing a compelling character like me made me feel a little bit more like I wasn’t just an afterthought to the people in the writers room. Why wouldn’t you want more people to enjoy that feeling? How is hoarding it for your demographic alone anything less than ghoulish?
I cried when I realised Krem in Dragon Age was a trans man. Never in a million years had I expected to find someone like me in a triple A. How starved of representation so many of us are, that so little means so much to us. But even basic acknowledgment that we exist is too much for the people you correctly called ghoulish.
*Sees a none white, none straight female character. "Oh my God, it's woke!?" Tony being able to build a suit in a cave, or being able to create a NEW FREAKING ELEMENT! Like wow, I wonder what's the difference.
I'll tell you the difference. And its not because they're men. Iron Mans intellect and technological proficiency comes from his background as the son of an intelligent, technological proficient father. MCU Peter Parker obtained his from getting bit by a special spider. Riri Williams became a genius in a garage. No real background there so I dont see why we cant question that. Shuri, same thing. With Wakandas technology heck everyone should be a genius in modern day standard.

@@stomachegg041 Yeah, it's not because they're men. Sure. It's not like Shurri didn't have an entire civilization of people with advanced resources that she could have learned from or inherited from. Tony is fine because his dad was a genius, and we didn't get to see Shurri or Riri's dad to determined their genius was inherited?? We only hear that Riri's dad was a mechanic, and inspired her to be fascinated with machines. Ironman's existence inspired her that she can do the same thing but with scraps she can utilize. Doesn't explain how Tony can forge a new element though but okay? Hahaha. The Vulture's crew literally did the same thing and modified Alien tech with everyday machine. Riri doesn't have alien tech but it not like she'll start from scratch since you know, Tony is already there and could base her design on it. Because a magic spiderbite means Peter would be a genius who magically knows how to build web shooters. And there's no magic spiders to bite Riri or Shurri. They need to learn, and study, adapting their idols (Riri) tech inorder to be better. Get out of here dude. You're not even trying dude. Hahahaha.
The simple fact is that entertainment used to be more ENTERTAINING... my biggest complaint of Hollywood movies and TV shows isn't that it is 'WOKE' or 'politically correct' but rather that there is no ORIGINALITY any more. Just look at what is being offered. Everything is a goddamn franchise already, Terminator 6, Scream 6, Star Wars 9, Indy 5, Marvel movie #34, D.C. Superhero movie #49, The Fast and the Furious #10 for Tyler's sake... Then on top of the endless slew of franchises there are the reboots, remakes, re-imaginings and whatever. Disney destroying itself with "live action" read CG or computer graphics remakes of ANIMATED FILMS... their bread and butter by the way. And CG NEVER LOOKS AS GOOD AS ANIMATION. I haven't seen a movie at the cinemas since Avengers Endgame... I'm bored of Hollywood and remember this guys, there are over 200 COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD. Hollywood isn't the center of the film industry, it just has a lot of money and marketing $$$$$ to make you think it is. But at the end of the day, they speak for no one but Hollywood actors and celebrities.... THAT is why their films are failing. I look forward to your feedback.
I'm curious to see if you address the MCU casting: Scarlet Witch and the Ancient One are characters of color but are portrayed by white women, while Namor and Nick Fury are white guys played by men of color, just for examples. How do fans feel about this and how does this positively or negatively affect diversity and representation?
There was alot of push back when the Ancient One was casted. In the comics he’s a Tibetan monk. However, at the time the MCU promoted heavily in China. China has a controversial history with Tibet. So the film makers recasted the character. IMO they should’ve kept the character still Asian. When it comes to Scarlet Witch & Moon Knight there was push back too. Moon knight gets some slack only because they reference his Jewish heritage in the show, but the actor isn’t Jewish. Scarlet Witch on the other hand nothing at all. Yet none of these guys who claim they care about diversity ever brought that up.

why exactly? The leftists are in control of almost all institutions and therefore constitute a sizable part of the elite, especially in culture and education.
when entertainment becomes a vessel for ideology rather than for entertainment… it kinda falls short on being able to be classified as entertainment. We all have different reasons why we partake in media, but there are separate genres for a reason. Mixing the simple sarcastic nature of comedy with the complicated starkness of our current climate of society doesn’t really seem to work for me. Like with art, contrast can be an abstract compliment to the work, or it can be an awkward deviation from its original purpose. My cup of tea has always been one with a story full of folly, laughing at mistakes while learning from them, and guiding a listener/watcher away from their capability to understand issues and toward a compromise with dumb universal language everyone understands
“Woke” in my opinion is any form of media that puts the message over good story, writing, and characters. Which means that yes I consider the sappy Christian movies “woke” in the same way that She-Hulk is.
0:21 Why did you put Ryan Chapman in there as an example of the problem? Have you watched his videos? He is really a pretty reasonable guy. Maybe I watched the wrong videos, but he seemed neutral when explaining controversial issues.
As bad as she hulk was I never really thought it was woke, it wasn’t bad because it was about woman or people of color or something like that, it was just writing but these certain people don’t tend to care about writing they just care about creating rage bait for views.
There was a lot of Black Superheroes before the Race Swap it’s nonsense to call this representation when all it’s doing it’s claiming is they can’t make good black characters without race swap.
I am super left-wing but I can’t deny there are woke politics being served to us in some of these shows. I’m not even saying it’s a bad thing to have some woke/progressive stuff, in fact it can be good. Let’s just not do it at the expense of the IP.

So this guys argument is summed up as "if you think its woke, your akin to nazi's"😂 and is the definition of grifter to this guy someone who doesn't think like him?
Hello, I'm an African-American youth who has consumed a lot of anti-woke content over the years due to my demands for better media to be written. My greater issue with the term when used for criticism isn't the term itself but the issues of a lack of cohesion involved with the term. I am appalled by The Sequel Trilogy as the films legitimately abandoned a potential African-American lead. Boyega was reduced to a minstrel; despite the narrative reasons that should be impossible, it was the direction Disney allowed. Watching a child solider get lectured to on the horrors of war by a commoner felt like that was somehow targeted as a secondary racial dogwhistle: "You, Black Man, have no problems. Only the problems that we show you are problems, not the ones you've experienced." It was agonizing having someone who was willing to die for his friends run, like a coward (The Last Jedi). Finn was then shelved in the final film doing basically nothing to advance the plot. It's hard to justify his place in the narrative after the first film. This makes ZERO sense as he has the best background to be heroic, compared to Ma-Rey Sue. *THE GOOD* I believe that Literature Devil made a very interesting critique of SJW Media by noting the odd disregard for the standards of that media itself. His definition of woke focused on the "inclusion" portion of their personality relied on to define them, even if the situation demanded the opposite. He noted how Kamala Khan's first issue failed as a superhero comic due to the lack of action and odd selfishness associated with the protagonist. He did little to criticize Kamala on her religion, instead mocking how she seemed to disregard her own faith's tenets to disobey her parents and attend a party. Khan was then rewarded with superhero powers, which was unlike that of Daredevil-a Catholic who you brought up in your video. Murdock had to give *up* things to obtain his powers, even refusing to live his own dreams of social success because his father compelled him to study. *THE BAD* TheQuartering is someone whose content had to get sanitized due to this thesis-level issue. He was a modern Joseph McCarthy screaming about everything being woke and being ruined because of it. His points were often more sapient when he could compare and contrast. The best example was that of The Last of Us Part II against The Ghost of Tsushima, stories that both tackled the increasing cost of vengance and changing warfare. Whenever TQ lacked any sort of basis, he would flounder to describe something. His content was quite hard to watch and I thought he'd improved after TLOU2 as he was genuinely able to express the weaknesses in the material. He was the best example of how piss-poor the discourse around something being woke is, by far. *THE UGLY* Nedrotic is a toss-up. He makes very solid criticism of media beyond just "WOKE." However, he slaps woke onto the criticisms which sours them. I can provide sources and timestamps for all of these videos and points therein with timestamps, if necessary. As someone who enjoys hearing the actual arguments against something being woke rather than the slang term for blanketing "WHAT I DON'T LIKE!" I enjoy the discourse around it. EDIT: Passive Voice
As someone who completely stopped watching anyone who ever brings up "woke" as a criticism, I agree with you. I try to find more neutral stances of critique on "woke" media that becomes a culture war battleground, TLoU2 being one of the biggest where defenders often fail to understand the real criticisms levied against the work. Though I firmly avoided any wokescolds and anti-SJW dudes, I found The Closer Look and Macabre Storytelling had excellent writing-focused teardowns to fill that niche. It's unfortunate how sparse it can be at times, though, when too many just accept the terms of a work's presentation without question. As an aside, Finn was the best idea (maybe the only good idea) the sequels had from a writing standpoint and was immediately squandered as a character. The queerbaiting with Finn and Poe was also awful and just classic Disney. I could not forgive the movies for that on a writing and plot level. As a white guy I can't really speak to it, but I figured racial concerns make the problem just so much worse.
The thing I love about that She-Hulk twerking scene is that it is 100% what shed do in character. Ffs, she got fired for photocopying her butt in the comics. All this "woke" thing is just not knowing the source material and thinking its self inserted when its true to the source material.
I mean, as a wonderbread white dude, She Hulk wasn't really my favorite. But I'm not mad it exists, and I still found it reasonable enjoyable to watch even though it wasn't target at me.
I think something that conservatives like to use as argument is badly written attempts at being woke, Shows where a character is Independent, Hard working, Determined, and so happens to be gay is a well written character because being gay isn't their identity, shows where they can't write anything besides the characters sexual orientation or race are just as problematic as ones that are openly being bigoted
@@Peasham Example 1 Well written Gay character: Nick Offermans Character in The Last of Us, Rosa Diaz in Brooklyn 99, Luz Noceda in the owl house Example 2 Poorly Written Gay Character: Mean Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural,Glee, 13 Reasons why, Riverdale, These shows all pretty much make being gay the characters entire personality, and any other character trait is shallower than the shallow "representation" the character has
Mainly I don’t care about “Wokeness” or “Anti Wokeness” because A good movie or show shouldn’t be controlled by it, what makes a movie or show good is the way they tell the story and solely on how they tell a good story, so what this character is gay is it making the story bad no, “look it’s a female lead” ok so what it’s a good movie because of the story they tell not the people telling it. My Opinion on it is that Film is made for Entertainment and as someone who would love to make movies and shows that is all it will ever be to me a form of entertainment to either bring joy or sadness something meant to inspire you to make your own stories.

It was kind of heartbreaking. Then they saw the women in the movie and directed their energy towards them.

Exactly. Friggin. This.

I've been making this Super Heroe Universe(that is *unofficially somewhere in the Marvel and DC multiverse), and I often think, "damn. With the movie/film/novel review climate now, my stories might be considered 'woke garbage' with an agenda to certain people."
For context, I'm a Latino, and my stories feature a lot of Latino characters with messages about the problems that affect my community and people and the issues that exist within our community.
First they came for the right-handed and we said nothing.

Oh they realize it. They just embrace it.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but it could be because you don't have a very commanding presence.

The bit at around 12:10 brings to mind a quote from Michael Parenti in Blackshirts & Reds, not exactly the same thing but it's definitely an interesting parallel
"During the cold war, the anticommunist ideological framework could transform any data about existing communist societies into hostile evidence.
What we are dealing with is a nonfalsifiable orthodoxy, so assiduously marketed by the ruling interests that it affected people across the entire political spectrum."
It's definitely a consistent technique of the right, if everything they do is wrong then it's proof they must be evil.
It’s funny because Superman is raised Mexicans in justice league gods and monsters
Woke = minority
I 100% agree. It's just ridiculous the amount of people with just no nuance whatsoever.
Isn't most of The Last Jedi Rey making bad choices for understandable reasons and failing when she does?

I also like how you describe her as selfish and in the very same sentence say that the only thing her character has going is being a fangirl.
I’m allowed to not like the new little mermaid because she doesn’t look like the cartoon come to life. Change all you want but if it’s not faithful to what’s come before then I’m just not gonna like it. The new Ben 10 show as well as the new modok are examples I have.
I'm sure you've been receiving a lot of backlash for this video (which is ironically from the anti-woke crowd) but I'd just like to say that you broke down this idea of "wokeness" in such an eloquent yet humorous way. You deserve a like and subscribe from me! Great video and I hope that you don't stop making "controversial" videos like this one.
Thank you :)
18:14 wrong. i AM trying to build a femboy army
"Leftist elites" is still a baffling concept, something that shows people who don't understand the meanings of either word.
why exactly?
You're not left wing lmao.
"Let's not do it at the expense of the IP."
They're not mutually exclusive jfc 😑
Fantastic FANTASTIC video ❤ Not enough creators on here talking about the grifty content creators that exist on this site or who’re on the internet in general.
Too many of them, I swear. And so many viewers latch onto their videos, arguments, etc. Thanks for this‼️
That's the problem, people who are pro woke name call and insult people they don't agree with. The whole argument that people are making is that the reason people watch movies and TV it's for entertainment not for political messages. If I want to watch political content I'll watch CNN, Fox News and etc
And they always say that while ignoring the politics of the media they claim to love.
But a lot of so called "woke" media doesn't have any politics in it, it's just the mere existence of people who exist, and if you have a problem with Black, Gay, Or trans people simply existing it's not the show being political, it's you
Oh don't pretend for a single second the anti-woke crowd don't do the exact same fucking thing.
I'm loving this. This is real text analysis. How can I make this content more visible?
Fantastic work here. You’ve hit the nail directly on the head.
This whole woke argument is just stupid In my opinion and just makes no sense to me.
@@yarc9 the actual definition for woke is this aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice) that's what the actual word means not the what these internet idiots believe what it's.

I’m gonna honest, I don’t think you and I would agree politically or morally( I’m a catholic so hope that clarifies what I mean). That being said, you have provided some interesting points regarding the term “woke” and I do agree it is truly overused by right wing support ( who I don’t support ). I will definitely be looking into your channel in contrast to some of the channels I’m use to.
Cool🎉
Arguments like the one demonstrated in the beginning remind me that these people think my mere existence is unnatural, and therefore they shouldn't have to contend with my right to live and be seen.
I heard someone saying that ant man 3 has communist themes because the ants were socialists never mind that socialism and communism are 2 different things and that line was very brief also socialism is a peaceful way for worker support while communism is a violent response
While I agree there are woke shows and movies out there, including minority/female/LGBTQ characters doesn’t make it automatically woke.
What about the writer of Wandavision that said that they didn't put strange in it because he is a white man? There are indeed situations where politics are literally creating plotholes and limiting storytelling possibilities
Considering all the white men of Wandavision that sounds like bullshit.
You’re remembering only half the quote. A reason Strange didn’t feature in the finale was that they didn’t want a white man to come in and *solve the problem* - it’s just as much about the way this would have been a really frustrating deus ex machina.
So this isn’t a case of ‘politics’ limiting storytelling possibilities, it’s a case of ‘politics’ coinciding with *smart narrative choices*.
@@PillarofGarbage strange not showing up is a literal plot hole in the universe that's motivate by his race and gender

Woke on the right is used similar to how the left use the word Fascist.
Nah, Fascism is pretty provable.
@@Peasham Fascism is the political philosophy of low freedom and even less equality. What part of this does this cheesecake-slandering man you're replying to not understand?
Now I don't have to use the word woke to express criticism, but people use things like (insert phobia) or (insert vague anti woke rhetoric) to justify why bad movies or TV shows don't do well or are disliked by audiences. Using black, lgtbq+, or whatever type of minority casting choice or progressive writing choices as a way to put your projects beyond criticism is a weak move. As a black person I'm not afraid to say a black writer, director, or actor is a hack. But can a white person say it? Or is there opinion only based upon their whiteness or anti woke propaganda?
I am so happy I found this channel because I have been searching for a long time trying to find a channel that gives both really good analysis and thoughts as well as directly calling out the hypocrisy and issues of the anti-woke folks.
So this guys argument is summed up as "if you think its woke, your akin to nazi's"😂 and is the definition of grifter to this guy someone who doesn't think like him?
We will stop calling them Nazis when they stop talking and acting so much like Nazis.
*THE GOOD*
I believe that Literature Devil made a very interesting critique of SJW Media by noting the odd disregard for the standards of that media itself.
*THE BAD*
TheQuartering is someone whose content had to get sanitized due to this thesis-level issue.
*THE UGLY*
Nedrotic is a toss-up.
The Last Jedi sucks
The thing I love about that She-Hulk twerking scene is that it is 100% what shed do in character. Ffs, she got fired for photocopying her butt in the comics. All this "woke" thing is just not knowing the source material and thinking its self inserted when its true to the source material.
I mean, as a wonderbread white dude, She Hulk wasn't really my favorite. But I'm not mad it exists, and I still found it reasonable enjoyable to watch even though it wasn't target at me.
You seriously deserve way mor subs than you already have! Keep up the great work, man❤

Except those show literally do not exist, is the problem.
@@Peasham Example 1 Well written Gay character: Nick Offermans Character in The Last of Us, Rosa Diaz in Brooklyn 99, Luz Noceda in the owl house
Example 2 Poorly Written Gay Character: Mean Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural,Glee, 13 Reasons why, Riverdale, These shows all pretty much make being gay the characters entire personality, and any other character trait is shallower than the shallow "representation" the character has
Mainly I don’t care about “Wokeness” or “Anti Wokeness” because A good movie or show shouldn’t be controlled by it, what makes a movie or show good is the way they tell the story and solely on how they tell a good story, so what this character is gay is it making the story bad no, “look it’s a female lead” ok so what it’s a good movie because of the story they tell not the people telling it. My Opinion on it is that Film is made for Entertainment and as someone who would love to make movies and shows that is all it will ever be to me a form of entertainment to either bring joy or sadness something meant to inspire you to make your own stories.
Not having watched to the end yet, but:
The thing you said about 1930 fascist rhetoric in germany is the reason why I and many other german listeners just find the current US media discourse so weird. It's just an namechange for "THE BOOGEYMAN"
You made me subscribe and unsubscribe in less than one hour. I don’t think it’s some conspiracy that woke ideology is being pushed, it’s really just individuals that infuse their art with their personal values and sometimes they’re a little bit woke. Like She-hulk show runners definitely had some woke stuff in the show. I think completely dismissing the idea that this stuff exists is just as folly as stating it’s performing some take over.
You are unable to define "woke".
@@Peasham Woke is essentially emphasizing identity politics. I don’t even think it’s a bad thing. Sometimes though it can be a little cringe.
For example, when She-Hulk was instantly able to control being a Hulk just because she’s a woman, it was super woke and cringy.
@@Aureilius2112 Wait, isn't it the narrative of the right that women and men are inherently different and good at different things? Doesn't the aforementioned She-Hulk example affirm that worldview then?
@@maxgrozema1093 first I’m not on the right. Second, yeah it would be, however I highly highly doubt the right thinks women are better at controlling emotions.
