I'm almost done reading You'd Look Better as a Ghost by Joanna Wallace. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. I was afraid it was going to be an over-the-top, campy villain story, but it's been a nice read. I like the honesty/bluntness of the character, even if I don't really like the character or what she does, at least she's honest about why she does it.

This is one of the things I love about books- that people can have such different opinions of the same work. Hawk Mountain reminded me more of something like John Knowles than Highsmith. (I'm one of those who loved it.) That cover is much cooler though than the one I have!

I had a similar experience with the book. The prose didn't bother me that much, but it really felt like he tipped his hand too much in places and I could see how he was purposefully obscuring some elements rather than it feeling organic. I understand wanting to develop a sense of mystery about their pasts but it was a bit overwrought, and I spent the whole middle section waiting for another big twist that never seemed to come. I'd definitely read his next book, though, as I think he's got something as an author, this book just didn't quite work for me.

Have you heard of an author called Adam M Booth? I don't hear many people talking about him, but the two things I have read by him I've really liked. One is a novella called 'Angela' and the other is a short story called 'The end.' I can recommend both of them :). 'The end' is an interesting one because it's a zombie story but told from the perspective of the zombie.

I definitely agree that the first part was the best part. I remember my jaw actually dropped at the end of part 1! I didn't mind the middle part, but I read it on audio, so I wonder if that helped it not feel like as much of a slog for me. Sorry it wasn't a hit for you, but I'm still glad you read it. I'll have to check out Patricia Highsmith 👀

It was definitely a hell of a twist! I think you'd love Highsmith

I read this last year and enjoyed the experience, but I don’t remember a single thing about it.

I second everything you said. I DNF’d though because it did not keep my interest at all and during the second part I got frustrated with the reading experience.

I read the first fifteen pages and didn't like it. Very implausible and only average prose.
