To counteract the blue light that the iPhone emits, you can switch the display option to night shift so that the display emits a warmer light. All you have to do is go to Settings> Display & Brightness> Night Shift. There you can select the settings that you want. You can also activate night shift by swiping up from the bottom of the iPhone and selecting the sun and moon symbol in the bottom right corner of your screen. This only works if it's updated to iOS 9.1 I believe.
And if you don't have an iPhone, you can download a free blue light filter on the Google Play store. I use Bluelight Filter for Eye Care. You have to download the Night Mode separately, but both are free, and you can tune them to your personal preferences. :) I also use f.lux on my laptop as well. Getting these programs has helped my eyes, and my sleep, so SO much!
if you use an android phone, you can actually install an app that automatically changes your screens light to a warmer red tone, as well as lowering brightness even further if need be. the one i use is called "twilight" if anyone is interested! i'm a huge insomniac who couldn't fall asleep until 7am on my worst nights, but when i switched all of my screens over to warm lighting, i usually fall asleep between 3am and 4am. that may not seem huge to people who have typical sleep cycles, but for an insomniac that's a definite win! it's a little strange getting used to at first, but after a couple of days you start finding the blue light way too harsh at night!
