In the world of automation it is common to use a Programmable Logic Controller to provide the logic that runs a machine. Inside the code of the PLC there will be variables that need to be changed by the operator of the machine, for example speed of a machine or job size. In order for the operator of the machine to be able to change these values and ultimately control the machine they need a way to interface with it. This is where these devices come in, they are called Human Machine Interfaces, or HMIs, and as the name suggest they allow the operator to interface with the machine. The way they work is the HMI connects to the PLC and changes the values inside of the code which in turn affect the operation of the machine. A machine builder or a systems integrator will use software such a TIA Portal to design an attractive simple to use interface to allow a machine operator to easily monitor and control machinery.
