First time this popped up in the suggestions as I was setting up my RUclips music i was taken back to being 6 years old. Riding in the backseat in north central West Virginia, traveling the dirt road through Holly Meadows on the way to my grandparents house in Leadmine. Winding through the heart of the Monongahela National Forest.. then I open my eyes and it's forty years later. This song expresses my feelings perfectly; I can't recite the lyrics to anyone without my voice cracking from choking back the tears.
Same for me. I remember going to my granny's house as a kid and knowing we were getting close when the roads turned to dirt and the smell of wild blackberries filled up the car. It's all gone now. This song makes me smell blackberries again.
@@unreconstructed one trip to the mountains, my sister and I started playing a game of hanging out the window to see who could get closest to touching the leaves alongside the road. After ignoring our parents about the dangers of it, dad found the perfect spot where he drifted over enough for our outstretched hands to hit a couple BlackBerry branches. Forty years ago and i remember it like yesterday. Mom spent the rest of the trip pulling thorns out with tweezers and was thoroughly pissed about it but we never did it again.
It's hard to find even one band member that knows how to accompany the other band members. But this entire group, especially the mando player, knows the difference between singing with and accompanying. Excellent.
This song always makes me tear up. It’s melancholy and just rips my heart out, and yet, the nostalgic depression is so captivating and I can’t seem to ever want it to end.
Sounds like my "neighborhood", except it ain't changed yet. Heck, if I want to head to the "Big Town" over in Bristol, VA/TN I gotta drive a 1 lane dirt road with switchbacks over a 4500ft ridge, waving at my neighbors along the way.
Day, a long while ago I Walked down dirt road and stood In the time great Stone walls lined the road, black and white cattle roamed in the field Of corn grown up straight These times have changed since my young life, and I never thought I'd see the day There's houses in the cornfields and fallin down barns And the old dirt road was paved And the old dirt road was paved Day, a long while ago I rocked on the front porch Sipped cool lemonaide Neighbors pass by they smile Stopped and talk of the corn wither on the day Now these times have changed since my young life, I never thought I'd see the day There's houses in the corn field and falin' down barns And the old dirt road was paved And the old dirt road was paved Day short while ago I stalked down dirt road and stood, time of change Sat by a stone wall I stared at a front porch fallin' down, withered from the rain Now these times have changed since my young life and I never thought I'd see the day There's houses in the corn field and a fallin downbarn And the old dirt road was paved And the old dirt road was paved
Derek Morgan I honestly like this. but, the policies of the current admin. I am ashamed to call myself an American. I hate trump and I do not want a dictator
Why can’t this be big selling, theater filling, halftime show bands. Imagine how much money you could donate to the city. All while making people actually feel good and happy
What are the actual lyrics for the first line? Stood in a time . . . .??? Those that I see posted on other sites don't make any sense. Stood in a time of great? What does that mean?
I have listened to this some 500 times since discovering it on Pandora last week. Perfection.
Welcome to the club.

Same!!
Me too! I've been trying to buy some of their records and they are nowhere to be found. Are they still a band?
@@jenniferaadnes18 can’t find anything on their whereabouts today
Time stands still and I get lost in my memories. I can live this song in my mind. Talk about tears... These guys know how to play.
Facts
Lump in my throat every time
@@user-to2rt9oe3m I can understand that. What great memories they must be. You are blessed.
Exactly, were I was raised, and now the roads are paved !
Drove through my hometown, my family’s vineyard was gone for a factory farm. I had to pull over and cry for a minute.
This needs way, way more love
They sound as good live as the studio recording. This song is so hauntingly beautiful.

If you like these guys, you should check out "the devil makes three"
Amazing, beautiful, sad, this song captures the loss we all feel as our world changes and the places we once loved are gone
This makes my mind think of my childhood. All I wanted was to get away. Now everything doesn't seem so bad as the world changes.
Can't believe how good these guys are
LOVE their music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Wow!!! Made me cry today, also. Brings to mind how life goes by and longing for the innocence of childhood
This song is so beautifully sad. It makes me nostalgic for a time I never knew. Puts a lump in my throat

Tells of my childhood and the woods and fields I roamed and played that is now a subdivision. Progress they said.

Day, a long while ago I
Walked down dirt road and stood
In the time great
Stone walls lined the road, black and white cattle roamed in the field
Of corn grown up straight
These times have changed since my young life, and
I never thought I'd see the day
There's houses in the cornfields and fallin down barns
And the old dirt road was paved
And the old dirt road was paved
Day, a long while ago I rocked on the front porch
Sipped cool lemonaide
Neighbors pass by they smile
Stopped and talk of the corn wither on the day
Now these times have changed since my young life, I never thought I'd see the day
There's houses in the corn field and falin' down barns
And the old dirt road was paved
And the old dirt road was paved
Day short while ago I stalked down dirt road and stood, time of change
Sat by a stone wall I stared at a front porch fallin' down, withered from the rain
Now these times have changed since my young life and I never thought I'd see the day
There's houses in the corn field and a fallin downbarn
And the old dirt road was paved
And the old dirt road was paved
Beautiful isn't it. Reminds me of my upbringing
I would love to see these guys make a video with imagery of this song.

Great job fellas !!
Tommy "2 Snakes" Roach, King of Cards, Sweet Summer Child, Master of Birds
Anyone know if they still tour?
Heck! Still together?
I don't think so. The guitarist is an engineer and the mandolin player runs some music venue.
👍

Wonderful. Not a bit of this nowadays inflating plastic folk music
What about the short pine? Doesn't he count?
Someone get them another mic, please, before someone loses an eye
Shiit this is hipster blue grass. Lacks authenticity.
