Hi, I am about ready to change my spring - but I don't have a spring compressor or the means to make the version you use (I saw your video on how to make it and it is very good, it's just not something I can make at the moment). Is there a way to do this without a compressor? Ie by putting pressure yourself on the spring using the flat head of a file etc? I know it won't be as easy or as safe, but is there a way? Thanks!
Hi - this was such a useful video - thank you. I just have a few questions if you don't mind - a) what's the name of that flat-lying vice-like thing with the screw adjuster clamped to the end? (The thing you put the barrel in to work on)? B) I see you ordered the spring cut to 34 coils, but you said you realised you had to cut a couple more off. How were you able to tell that, and to know how much to cut off? (I ask so that I'll know when i do the same thing) C) you mention something about "locking" the screws at the end- do you mean using "thread lock" liquid? D) I'm going to order from the website you linked, specifying at 34 coils - the 142 Wire Spring 830OD. Will this spring fit most springer makes and models, or only certain ones? I have a variety of springers so would be good to know if it could work with any of them. Cheers!
A) is a spring compressor I came up with to work on springers. I made a video on making it. B)the reason I had to cut it was because it ended up binding up so I had to shorten it to allow the spring to compress. I cut a bit then tested it until the main spring compressed without any binding. Takes some time unless you make big incremental cuts C) blue locktite is a good idea on anything that moves or vibrates

@@jimstewart5008 I found out by accident on my HW80, many years ago, just adding a small weight inside the front of the piston & then cutting off four coils from the spring, that put the power up & made it more comfortable to shoot. The trouble was, it took it over our 12ft/lbs limit so I put a standard spring back in & brought it back to how it was. It was a good experiment though.
Anything over 12 foot pounds makes the gun less accurate simple law of physics proven . Doesn't matter what make of gun more important is gun weight but the laws of gravity × physics is finite. The point the pellet is less than a quarter of the way down the barrel at 800 fps that's fact that's life . Good video.
Yes basically that’s correct ✅ but don’t go overboard on thickness because you’ll get coil bind and make cocking it way harder for not much return in velocity. I found the gun shot best at around 600 fps
I did do longer and got spring bind. So thicker was basically the only way but it lost its nice shootability. It’s back destined again so it shoots nice soft and accurate again
@@BROTUNED so if ı use longer spring, it will not increase the power? ı wanna buy longer spring so thats why asking ur longer spring resuts? lets say original sprign is 20 cm, but if ı use 23 cm same stiffer spring. will it increase the velocity because it has longer spring?
Wasn’t much but the more I go faster the more I want to put the light spring back in for quietness and light recoil. But I think it was in the 100fps range
Excuse me, what was the original fps of the air rifle? was it 500 fps ! But after changing the spring with thicker one, you gained more than 380 fps? so 500 fps air rifle became 880 fps air rifle now? Could you please let us know also after long term use what happaned? any problem so far?
Can u tell me the exact measurements on the spring if u know them please could only see the diameter on the sheet I can’t buy from vortek in my country 😢
You will have to either take yours apart and take measurements of the stock stuff then get another spring with the same diameter but thicker coils or more coils.
Hi I have crossman .177 it’s not getting the pellets out , I have to shoot about 7 times before the pellet comes out, some debris is coming out, do you know how to fix it, thanks
Maybe you piston seal is faulty? Is this a new rifle? Ammo shouldn’t make a difference as long as it is .177. Possibly the seal on the barrel is missing or damaged? Have you ever taken the rifle apart?
It’s about 20 years old , but I keep it in good shape, but I kept it in the shed outside throughout summer and winter, maybe seal is not good anymore. I never took it apart, but after watching your video I’m going to try
Found an older one than this in my dad's stuff.....he died a few years ago. Would love to have someone that knows what they're doing to fix mine. I tried some new pellets and it's not working. The pellet basically just drips/falls out of the barrel. Know anyone in western NC that may know how to fix it. I took it to a local gun shop and they wouldn't look at it.

I've heard that an alternative way to add potential energy to your existing spring is to stretch out each coil slightly - so that the entire spring becomes marginally longer, and so when it is compressed it holds more potential energy - is this true? Cheers!
I to be totally honest want to go back to the light factory spring at about 490 fps it was just a lot easier to shoot. The big spring makes the recoil get very sharp and cocking it is a workout. I guess it depends what you want to do with it. For target plinking 600 is what I would recommend

I would get not but could be wrong. At least on Canadian guns anyways. They have to be sold at below 500 fps to be a not firearm and to get the pellets to get there a .177 spring would not push the heavier .22 pellet at that velocity so I’d say it would have to be a bigger spring

Thanks. Always bothered that can't get ones higher then 500 fps here in canada like at Candian Tire and just bought one and want to get it closer to 1000, so will definitely try this :)
@sRecollet just message them tell them what kind of gun you have and what your looking to do
@@colbtron OK thanks. Checked out their site and seen like 15 listed but wasn't sure which one(s) would be compatible. Will definitely do that, thanks :)
@@sRecollet where are you from ?
Nice enjoin hebackground. What style o yu play? Frailing, traitionalor Earl Scruggs picking? I'm a bluegrass and d time rythm and flatpicking guitarist myself. I have a Hatsan model 85 .22 open sights which I'm really enjoying. 850fps.
That’s my Dan Electro DC 59 bass guitar. I mostly play punk rock and metal on both bass and guitar.
I have a Air Hawk Elite one pump pellet rifle the ball that rode on the barrel that helped cock it came off in the spring came out but the ball fell down in the barrel
What I am interested in is how harsh is the recoil and what is accuracy like now?
With the big spring it’s a bit much going to go back to the previous one for sure. Not worth the trade off
@@BROTUNED been down that road years ago there is only a certain amount of volume for air in an airgun and using a heavy spring creates piston slam and harsh recoil not to mention the strain on everything cocking arm, contact points and trigger sear. If you make another video maybe explain that to the views, I am afraid people new to airguns, may destroy a perfectly good airgun
Ya I will make a new vid about this issue
@@jimstewart5008 I found out by accident on my HW80, many years ago, just adding a small weight inside the front of the piston & then cutting off four coils from the spring, that put the power up & made it more comfortable to shoot. The trouble was, it took it over our 12ft/lbs limit so I put a standard spring back in & brought it back to how it was. It was a good experiment though.
That’s very interesting
Power is nothing without accuracy, what are your groups like at say 30 yards, ?
Definitely not as good as the lighter spring. I know what you’re saying though.
Should have bought yourself a table before the spring 😂
True enough lol
Anything over 12 foot pounds makes the gun less accurate simple law of physics proven . Doesn't matter what make of gun more important is gun weight but the laws of gravity × physics is finite. The point the pellet is less than a quarter of the way down the barrel at 800 fps that's fact that's life . Good video.
I enjoy it most at around 650 fps but I just wanted to see what it would do
How do we consider a stronger spring for upgrade? Is it longer, harder, or thicker than the original? Thanks.
Yes basically that’s correct ✅ but don’t go overboard on thickness because you’ll get coil bind and make cocking it way harder for not much return in velocity. I found the gun shot best at around 600 fps
@@BROTUNED Noted, thanks for the tips.
We're can you order stronger springs please.
Vortekproducts.com is the site I believe
Another Great video. Thank you so much.
Cheer
Cheers Donald
Thicker spring or same kind but longer spring may gives more fps (power) ???
I did do longer and got spring bind. So thicker was basically the only way but it lost its nice shootability. It’s back destined again so it shoots nice soft and accurate again
@@BROTUNED so if ı use longer spring, it will not increase the power? ı wanna buy longer spring so thats why asking ur longer spring resuts? lets say original sprign is 20 cm, but if ı use 23 cm same stiffer spring. will it increase the velocity because it has longer spring?
I CAN`T BELIEVE YOU DIDN`T TAKE THE PISTON OUT. POLISH IT AND PUT A NEW SEAL ON IT AND LUB IT UP FOR REASSEMBLE.
It’s easy enough to do just testing the main spring in this video. So the only variable was the spring
And mill out slots in the piston to make it lew weight
@@crazycressy7986 what is lew weight
Que resorte le puso al rifle para que tire mas fuerte? Expliquelo por favor
I went to vortekproducts.com you can find the springs there
Can u tell me the exact measurements on the spring if u know then please could on see the diameter on the sheet I can’t buy from vortek in my country
30mm x .142” x34 coils
you think it possible to 3d print a spacer to insert into the airgun to get higher fps whit the same spring?
Oh I’m sure you could 100%
Test and tune basically
How would you s screw the end cap back on say if it was a hw 80 with it being under pressure
I guess you couldn’t unless you can figure out a way to hold the tube securely and have the back exposed
Great video man. Can you attempt this on a gamo speedster? to uprate the spring for more ft/lbs and fps?
Cheers
I’ll have to find one but I will if I can get one definitely
No front spring guide..... 😮
Never had one
How much increase in velocity??Thanks
Wasn’t much but the more I go faster the more I want to put the light spring back in for quietness and light recoil. But I think it was in the 100fps range
Excuse me, what was the original fps of the air rifle? was it 500 fps !
But after changing the spring with thicker one, you gained more than 380 fps? so 500 fps air rifle became 880 fps air rifle now?
Could you please let us know also after long term use what happaned? any problem so far?
Ya it was a 495 gun before
Can u tell me the exact measurements on the spring if u know them please could only see the diameter on the sheet I can’t buy from vortek in my country 😢
I’ll have to check the paperwork again I can’t recall the specs anymore
Any tips for improving the fps on the glock 17 bb gun gen 3?
I have never looked into it but if there’s a will there’s a way

ive been looking for a spring upgrade for my Beeman silver Kodiak dual cal.i want more power
Check out vortekproducts.com/
Is it an umarex ruger hawk air rifle?I just got one myself today,if it's the same model,I can just apply the spring size you use to mine
It is a ruger air hawk 495 fps and in .177

@@BROTUNED How many coils that spring still have after you cut it,I want to save that step so I don't need to cut and grind myself😂
No problem thanks for your comment
Outstanding!👍👍👍
Thank you so much Catherine Harris really appreciate that. Cheers!
I have a 7,5 joule umarex .177 air gun and i want to mod it, what do you suggest? Like lubing the piston or what spring should i get, Thanks🙏
The biggest thing that makes the biggest difference is changing the main spring to something stiffer. Vortekproducts.com
@@BROTUNED i have no idea what i should get, any ideas?
You will have to either take yours apart and take measurements of the stock stuff then get another spring with the same diameter but thicker coils or more coils.
Hi , nice job , how much did you gain and where did you get your spring from .
Over stock it almost doubled the velocity and I purchased the springs from vortek.com
OK , Thank you and that link does not work .
vortekproducts.com/ourstore/index.php?route=product/category&path=64
I couldn’t remember the exact site but it is vortekproducts.com
That link worked and Thank You :=}
I wonder how much dieseling would increasing fps with this setup.
A lot but no accuracy though no consistency
Hi I have crossman .177 it’s not getting the pellets out , I have to shoot about 7 times before the pellet comes out, some debris is coming out, do you know how to fix it, thanks
Maybe you piston seal is faulty? Is this a new rifle? Ammo shouldn’t make a difference as long as it is .177. Possibly the seal on the barrel is missing or damaged? Have you ever taken the rifle apart?
It’s actually marksman 177, Do you have a video how to replace the seal
It’s about 20 years old , but I keep it in good shape, but I kept it in the shed outside throughout summer and winter, maybe seal is not good anymore. I never took it apart, but after watching your video I’m going to try
Could be rusted inside. You’ll have to check it out and perhaps hone the cylinder and get a rebuild seal kit online.
Thank you
I used to do this when I was ten I used my weight to compress the spring and tap the pin out easy you don't need jigs and clamps crappy tools
You do when your old , 👴🏼
😂
I should know 😒
I’m just trying to make it easier and less sketchy for myself and I was bored
If you don’t have a pal license and make a 495 fps into something over 500 fps would that be illegal?
Yes it magically 🪄 becomes a firearm. Isn’t that crazy

Yes
Where can I get a spring press like that?

where did you get the springs and upgrades
I got my springs from vortekproducts.com
@@BROTUNED are they still in bussiness ?
I believe that they are but haven’t ordered from them in many years so not positive
Does it cock and spring back when you pull the trigger. May just need new seals and to clean up the inside of the piston tube
@@BROTUNED , yes, it does. I have no idea if my dad ever did any of that so I'll try to check it out and see. Thank you very much!
Ok good luck with the gun hope you get it working

No Lube ?
Lots in there
Can I put a stronger spring on a youth break barrel
I don’t see why not. Would make the cocking harder though
I've heard that an alternative way to add potential energy to your existing spring is to stretch out each coil slightly - so that the entire spring becomes marginally longer, and so when it is compressed it holds more potential energy - is this true? Cheers!
Makes sense but I haven’t tested it
Why didn’t you put sheet down on that lovely floor
I was careful
Hey Where can I order a spring for my gamo varmint air gun in Canada ???
Vortekproducts.com
What increase in fps did you get? You never showed the results - only the final result. Was it worth it?
I to be totally honest want to go back to the light factory spring at about 490 fps it was just a lot easier to shoot. The big spring makes the recoil get very sharp and cocking it is a workout. I guess it depends what you want to do with it. For target plinking 600 is what I would recommend
Looks like a pain in the ass. I'd pay you to do it but im in London Ont. Canada eh.
I’m just up near Peterborough. Cheers Donald

Oh ha ha that’s crazy the seriously don’t deform?
@BROTUNED nope...I think they were like 29.99 for 50 at cabelas..real expensive...saved them for my best kills hahaha jack rabbits took a pounding when I was in Edmonton 😅
That is expensive
@@BROTUNED where are you out of?
Like city? Country?
Are the springs same in .22 and .177 Cali guns
I would get not but could be wrong. At least on Canadian guns anyways. They have to be sold at below 500 fps to be a not firearm and to get the pellets to get there a .177 spring would not push the heavier .22 pellet at that velocity so I’d say it would have to be a bigger spring
@@BROTUNED So the answer is , you're not sure?
Yes that is correct ✅
Where did you get the spring from?
I believe the website is vortek.com or something like that
Does widening the end of the barrel with a drill affect performance
The muzzle would ruin performance I just matched the breach end to get the best flow through the port
what kind of fish do you have?
Lol 😂 no clue the kids picked them
I guess with crappy tools comes a crappy workbench. LOL
You bet! Ha ha
500 fps limit? Sounds like everyone wouldn't be able to get anything more than a multi pump air pistol.
The Canadian gun law is a joke.
