Fascinating. I would encourage everyone to read Matthias's complete accompanying article, in which he provides conclusions. While all of these particles might seem scary for woodworkers, they are actually not as dangerous as one might assume. (Especially when compared to tobacco smoke.) As for shop filters, there is an important quote from an MD in the article: "Air filtration is primarily for comfort and aesthetics, not health."
Ha! "The back says do not attempt to open, but I have a screw driver" LOVE IT! That is my answer for eveything from now on!
The comparison you used, to give the difference between a centimeter and a micron, it's just perfect! I never tought of using distance to give a perspective of size but damn that's the best idea !
For my own box, I explain it in the article and video. For the Dylos - you will have to ask them. Though making the geometry work for anything but side illumination will put a lit more distance between the beam and sensor, so you may lose more than you gain.
I have 7 large true HEPA air cleaners including 2 IQair and 3 Honeywell 17450 units. As an experiment I put them all in my 10x12 bedroom and shut the window and door. The counts were about 1000 on the Dylos (100,000 particles per cubic foot) at 0.5 microns. Incredibly, after only 15 minutes the counts were holding between 0 and 4 on the Dylos! Not at any of the air cleaner air outputs but with the particle counter in the middle of the room! My room is 850 cubic feet and my air cleaners are moving air over 1600 cubic feet a minute! My CADR is 120 air changes an hour!
I am sure if the room was empty the counter would stay on 0, but fast moving airflow itself over bedding, carpet and other objects will generate particles.

Agree, there is some risk. Though probably nowhare near as bad as asbestos, silicates, or smoking.

Great video. Does the particle count increase when you're actively collecting dust?
"Yes, you may quote me. I do not have a reference." A quick search in PubMed will find contradictory references. I stumbled on a few that demonstrate evidence for an increased risk for lung cancer with wood dust exposure. Risk for nasal and nasopharyngeal cancers are also elevated with wood dust exposure.
What model of detector is it?
i think the dylos is just tunned for a constant airflow (provided by the fan)

I have the Dylos DC1700 0.5 / 2.5 micron model that is battery operated (and or) ac powered. It is sure worth it to get the battery operated unit. If you want to convert your non battery operated DC1100 to battery operated get an 8 AA cell battery holder from ebay ($5) or RadioShack. Many thrift stores have ac adaptors for a few bucks. Find one that fits the jack on you DC-1100. Cut off the wall ac adaptor, we just want the wire and dc connector. Strip the 2 wires at the ends and twist them together to join the red and black wires of the battery holder and use some tape around the connection. The tip of the connector is positive. A multi meter comes in handy here. The 8 AA battery holder will provide 12 volts if used with 1.5 v alkaline batteries, the Dylos only takes 9 volts dc, so only use 7 1.2v rechargeable AA batteries instead of 8. Make a dummy battery from a steel bolt or a paperclip. Now you can use your DC1100 as a portable battery operated unit! I have been taking mine everywhere to check air quality.
Great idea. Would it work with a rechargeable 9 volt? Has your meter continued to work over the years with this adapter?

If your filters works well, you should to feel smell resembling soap. Does anyone notice that?
Those micro-particle furnace filters must be changed as soon as they load up or else the air flow through your furnace heat exchanger & AC evaporator coil will not receive the proper CFM of air flow to work efficiently.
In a worst case (fully clogged filter) scenario, you can shorten the life of the heat exchanger by an overheat condition due to lack of air flow or your AC evaporator may freeze into a solid chunk of ice. Don't ask me how I know this. :-)
Wow. Interesting. I really didn't think the dust collector would actually be working as an air purifier.
I suspect that the initial dust is mostly due to the film of dust that accumulates over the bag's exterior while it's not in use.

I was actually wondering at first if it was a radiation-based device like a smoke detector after seeing that, but I guess then the warning would've been even more strongly worded.

There's no way your particle counter is detecting 0.5 microns. It's likely counting at 10 or 15 microns and extrapolating to 0.5 microns via particle distribution curve. (Clue - what's the wavelength of your laser & what size of particle does it say it can count)?
I couldn't see clearly from the video but looks like the sensor is a blocking sensor. The monitor may be useful for course qualitative comparisons, but it is certainly not counting particles.

Im thinking of buying dylos but can not seem to convince myself to go for a Pro, after reading on the experiment above.
They claim that dylos does not really count anything smaller than 2.5 microns.
Also would seem to me that jumping to such small scales like 0.5 microns would require a device that costs lot more than just $50 over the standard model. Have you ever wonder or compared dylos readings with more professional equipment?

Nice research Mat.. just do not use pressure treated wood in house or stained or painted wood . Coarse you know being totally bacteria free is impossible and not so good over all to health . Less you stay in that environment the rest of your life . M.C an relax.

do not 'attempt' to open? attempt? Didn't exactly say they didn't want you to have it open - just make sure you succeed I guess
