That does work. Also, when someone lets go, L1+R1 (cancel) or L1+R1 with L2+R2 (super cancel) allows their player to stop dribbling/moving more quickly, so they can flick straight up.

While in the box, try holding down L2/LT while pressing down on the right stick to flick it up, and then shoot while the ball is still in the air

@@jimmydebus3717 Sounds like you might have a right stick drift issue. I would try using a quicker player with higher reactions if possible to compensate for where the ball is being flicked, if that's the case.
If that doesn't work, hit LB/RB or L1/R1 at the same time when you enter the box, and that should halt your dribble and movements (L1/R1 + L2/R2 is an even more responsive movement stopper called "super cancel"). Then press directly down on the right stick (without aiming in any direction) and shoot. Sometimes L2 or LT has to be held for the self-volley to be registered when you flick it up.
