    There are 10 guys for 4 or 5 spots. Expect a bloodbath. Davis, Branch and Joseph (or Brandon Joseph) will start. You're talking about 1, maybe 2 spots open, Iffy is not automatically a starter. In base (4-3), it's Joseph, Branch, Davis, Amik/Arnold, so Iffy is by default a "bench" player. That's not how things are going to play out. There are 7 players that could be rotating in and out of that defensive secondary.
    Also, Aaron Glenn throws out different schemes against different offenses. The Lions did not draft Ennis Rakestraw to sit him the whole season. They are going to throw out different packages of DBs against different teams.
    Also, your #1 option covering tight ends at the present is Iffy Melifonwu. Your #1 option for a blitz from the secondary is Iffy Melifonwu.
    Iffy will play.

    To be honest, Joseph is someone who I could see losing his spot to Melifonwu at some point this season.
    The way Iffy played down the stretch last year, only his injuries/availability issues should keep him on the bench.

      Iffy a strong safety and Kerby a free safety

    • @wolfebilt
      @wolfebilt 3 месяца назад +2

      @davegilliam72, that's fine. If Lions think that Iffy is a better secondary player, then I think they'd scheme a way for him to see the field more.
      On paper, you are right.

      JOSEPH IS OUT WITH A HIP. He was the weakest in coverage last year. CLICK BAIT!!,...WE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN IN THE PLAYOFFS WITHOUT IFFY. SO "fan nation" are they right,... my eyes said different. As far as coaches opinions,... they better make frikken good choices or coaches are going down.those weren't our starters in 2021... our 2021 was Amari and Okuda... you need to stop click baiting and using si gle sources to support your "thoughts"

    I can't imagine that Detroit signed Amik to sit on the bench. It's a high possibility that Iffy is benched for at least the start of the season then switch things up and put Iffy in later in the season.

      They "knew" Sutton was history at the time. Branch is part of the future of the team. Amik and Davis could be short-term as could be Iffy,... but only because of contract next year. Kerby is a playmaker who misses on coverage sometimes. Way, way too early without full participation,... inbfull pads, with our new scheme.

    The Lions should not give up any draft picks for Woods. He'll likely be cut anyway by the Texans so they could get him for nothing. He might have another productive year or two left in him especially playing with a familiar QB in Goff and a great offensive system under Ben Johnson

    Branch’s run stopping and blitz ability make him more valuable closer to the line of scrimmage at nickel corner imo. He’s so versatile, but we have depth everywhere now, so I think he’ll stay at nickel /wildcard.

  • @doublea9482
    @doublea9482 3 месяца назад +2

    Best players play simple as that. I think Iffy played so well last year because the bar was much lower. However, Iffy is a great backup option when someone needs a blow. Or for an injury.

  • @thomaswatkins3686
    @thomaswatkins3686 3 месяца назад +1

    I think “starter” is just a label. Branch had 9 starts last year, but he saw tons of time. Iffy has a role. A big one. Just like Rakestraw. Eventually your lineup will be Arnold-Rakestraw-Branch-Joseph with Amik in the slot. Maybe a year down the line. But Iffy will see tons of work in the sub packages this year.
    His contract being up after 2024 is another reason Rakestraw was a very smart move. After this year Mosley, Davis and Iffy all come off the books. Hopefully they can resign at least 2 of those guys. Iffy might want to start. So he could walk anyway. But it’s a very good problem to have.

  • @Tre-77
    @Tre-77 3 месяца назад +1

    Branch played so good at nickel last year, unless he gets beat out by Amik Robertson, I don't think he would.
    I would still start Iffy and Kirby at Safety. Maybe Bransh plays some snaps at Safety, as long as a Amik is playing as good as Branch could at nickel. It depends on how he develops. No need to rush him to start, unless he can earn it.
    I didn't hear Barnes get mentioned when talking about linebackers. Is Rodriguez ahead of Barnes now?

    What if the brains could come up with a totally new defensive scheme, sort of a hybrid 3/4 vs a 4/3 using Betts as a JACK LB/DE or change it up and have another DB/S instead of a WILL LB...we have seemingly a lot of talent that we could exploit with a free thinking coach

  • @W1se0ldg33zer

    Coach was saying how tough the competition was in his defensive backfield - couldn't ask for a better problem to be having.
    No on Woods - he's not scaring anyone.
    We need that second wide receiver who comes in and can scare the shirt outta defenses. Jamo isn't that yet but he could be.
